Alpha wins University of Kentucky Student Government Presidency

Brown wins SG presidency
Issue date: 3/30/06 Section: Campus News
The Kentucky Kernel
(The University of Kentucky)

In a larger turn out than last year's student government elections, Jonah Brown [Alpha Phi Alpha] and Mallory Jenkins [Pi Beta Phi] were elected president and vice president respectively. Brown won the Greek Political Action Committee endorsement - marking the 17th GPAC endorsement winner in the last 18 elections to win the presidency.

ETA: Miss Jenkins' affiliation

Is Mal in a sorority? I have yet to see (read) any mention of an affiliation for her.

PhrozenGod01 03-31-2006 04:26 PM

All I can say is, 1-1-1-1-1-1-1-9.......06!!!!!!!! That is another reminder why I'm proud to be an Alpha.

On a related note, one of my frat is running for vice president at my school (University of Minnesota). If he wins, I'll break out a broom.

Wolfman 03-31-2006 06:37 PM

Good stuff to see our Greeks being active in SGAs! Congrats!

Tom Earp 03-31-2006 06:49 PM

Thanks. I'll edit my orginal post to include her affiliation.

jitterbug13 03-31-2006 10:42 PM

Congrats to both of them!!!!:D :D

_Lisa_ 04-01-2006 11:43 AM

I was just down on campus last night for an initiation & saw all the Brown/Jenkins posters littered throughout the Sigma Kappa house as well as Sorority circle! :D I'm glad to hear that they won!

ilikehazing 04-01-2006 03:58 PM

Even though the Alpha's are just a corporation, don't your greeks normally win the Student Government elections? As far as I can remember a greek has always won president, and at least two more positions. The only people who have a shot at winning the elections this year, are greeks. Also, it's a fraternity, not a frat.

edit: Also, if you delete this post because i said the Alpha's are just a corporation I will crap myself, because then the mods are essentially anti-truth. Thank you.

Greekopedia 04-01-2006 11:37 PM

awesome!?!

is it a general trend for Alphas to be active on campus... especially in SG?

I was heavily involved in student government and noticed this trend on some campuses... to the point where many BGLOs pretty much "ran" the Black/African American population and represented that constituency. In other words, to win their vote... work with the greeks.

All fraternities are corporations. Whichever one accepted you is also a corporation.

And though "frat" is a pejorative in your world, in the Black fraternal world it is just an abbreviation for fraternity brother, as "soror" is an abbreviation for "sorority sister."

If you disagree, of course that is your right -- but it's not your place to "correct" something that, for us, is already correct.

And finally, more than one Alpha is "Alphas." Something belonging to one Alpha (or to the fraternity as a whole) would be "Alpha's."

ilikehazing 04-03-2006 02:58 AM

Honestly, if Blacks are going to copy the usage of Greek Lettering for their fraternities and sororities, I would prefer that they treat their fraternity with respect. Too often GDI's love to use the word frat.

Yikes. Who is this joker?

Congratulations to Jonah on his victory and representing Alpha Phi Alpha. Congratulations to Mallory as well.

Does anyone have pictures of the winners? :)

Even more impressive is a 'minority' team winning from a 'diverse' student body in the South.

Maybe I missed something, but when did it become a negative thing to be a corporation? I'm confused:confused:

This is somebody who is enjoying stirring up people - check his/her name. Just ignore ilikehazing.
I'm not sure why the term "frat" is considered ignoble. It's just a shortening of "fraternity" or "frater." I know TKE uses the term "frater" but other groups do not like it. If it's your group's preferred style, who cares?
And congratulations to the Greek winners!

ilikehazing 04-04-2006 11:59 AM

The problem is that it does not show any respect to the fraternity. As the old saying goes, you don't call your country a cunt, and you don't call your fraternity a frat. It's plain disrespectful, especially the way most GDI's and others use it. A "frat" is something they called animal house, a fraternity is a group of men, chosen in their college days because of their adherence to common ideals and principles. Greekchat, of all boards, should understand respect and honor.

haha.

Your cultural ignorance is partly amusing and partly annoying. If the Alphas and other BGLOs prefer to use the word frat, your opinion doesn't matter. STFU

ilikehazing 04-04-2006 12:11 PM

I don't expect my opinion to matter. You just showed me exactly the reason why I don't want to live in some direction from the South, known as the North, West, Midwest. No respect for the standing institutions. I'm not exactly sure what was ignorance however, would you like to elaborate?

Oh, this is funny. Of course you're unaware of your ignorance. That's precisely what it means to be ignorant of something. Honestly, are you in college?

Oh, and I forgot about this.

So, what you're saying is that not using the word "frat" is considered a standing institution?

brownsugar952 04-04-2006 12:38 PM

It's funny that someone is upset that another person uses the word "frat" but his name is "ilikehazing." Call me crazy, but I think that all National organizations are against hazing... I don't think you are too concerned about what GDI think with a name like that.

And you still didn't answer my question. What is wrong with being a corporation?

THEY ARE USING IT TO REFER TO EACH OTHER NOT TO THE FRATERNITY. I HAVE NEVER HEARD AN NPHC MEMBER SAY "MY FRAT" REFERRING TO THE ORGANIZATION. IT'S A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THING.

Although he IS right in saying that "frat" as used to refer to the organization or chapter is vulgar and trashy.

Why is this? I've often heard this said before, but I've never heard anyone give a solid reason for it other than that this is just what they have been taught. If there is a defined reason why this abbreviation is found offensive, then please clarify.

Thanks!

Please read this, then read this then tell me who copied from whom.

Because "frat" has come to embody the lowest common denominator of fraternity life and is used by people who don't know what they're talking about. It's also used as a pejorative term by people who DO know better.
