Hats

We discuss shoes, handbags, and other accessories - so, what do y'all think about hats? Do you just like the baseball cap or other informal style, or do you splurge on a dressy hat for a formal wedding or luncheon? How much do you consider a "splurge", and where do you like to get them?

I wear the occasional formal hat because I just love the look and have the right face/head shape for one. Okay, I was also a hat model for a while in college, but those were antique hats.

Do you (ladies) find hats silly, or if the hat is a somewhat normal or conservative style, do you find yourself thinking, "Hmmm...."?

AchtungBaby80 03-14-2006 07:48 AM

I have three antique hats (1950s era), a straw cowboy hat, and a couple baseball caps, but I rarely wear any of them. I'd say I probably get the most use out of the baseball caps because I like to wear them to the pool in the summer. I think you really have to have the right face shape or something, like you were talking about, to look great in a hat...and unfortunately, I don't have it.

AlphaFrog 03-14-2006 08:16 AM

I have a few black felt cowboy hats from high school when I used to go line dancing every weekend. (Until that bar go so crowded it was ridiculous.) I think I pulled them off well...I have a Sr. picture with it on.

Formal hats don't look right on me. Baseball caps are OK, but I have to have my hair pulled through the back, or it won't fit.

HotDamnImAPhiMu 03-14-2006 09:08 AM

I *hate* seeing baseball caps on girls (excepting, obviously, baseball games, girls running, the pool - places where the cap is serving an obvious purpose.)

To me it just says, "I gave up on trying to look presentable."

Kind of like sweatpants. Great when you're sweating! Not so great other times.

kddani 03-14-2006 09:11 AM

I have a big head, so I have a hard time getting hats to fit me, lol.

I've been told that I look good in a baseball cap, but its a very very rare occasion that I wear one, usually only to a sporting event.

Aside from winter hats when it's cold, I rarely see young women in hats. I think they've just gone out of style.

HotDamnImAPhiMu 03-14-2006 09:17 AM

Maybe this is a good opportunity to discuss the pink baseball cap thing.

Ech.

I have a couple baseball hats, which I usually wear for things like playing baseball or working out. I do admit to wearing them on occasion for a late-night grocery run or days when I really oversleep and won't make it to class, but that's about it.

I have about 10,000 winter hats, but with the weather up here, we've started just leaving ours on for class.

Same here.

pinkiebell1001 03-14-2006 10:39 AM

Eh...Im not a hat fan at all- my sister always used to try and get me to wear them, since she claimed they looked cute on me, but eh...I just think they look trashy, unless it's at like a baseball game or whatnot. I like some of the antique hats, but I would never ever wear them-seems like they'd get in the way!

HotDamnImAPhiMu 03-14-2006 10:52 AM

Hats at baseball games are totally acceptable.

Unless they're pink.

wrigley 03-14-2006 10:57 AM

Sometimes baseball caps are a nice alternative when having a bad day. I thought the pink baseball caps had to do with raising funds for breast cancer.

Hats are not at all silly. You lose a certain percentage of heat if you don't wear a hat in cold weather.

I felt I was born in the wrong era. It's great to see an outfit with a coordinated hat and gloves. Good hat pins are hard to find.I've gotten some hats from department stores. It's all about the proper fit and how it flatters your face.

It's funny when Hollywood has a hat trend, certain styles are not flattering for everyone.

HotDamnImAPhiMu 03-14-2006 10:58 AM

We're not talking about knit hats you wear in the snow here.

Lil' Hannah 03-14-2006 11:08 AM

I have a few different types of hats but don't wear them very often. I'll wear one of those floppy fishermen's hats at the beach, and I have a wide-brimmed straw hat that I wear to horse races. And of course knit caps in the winter and the occasional baseball cap if I run to the store. I never really got into those Kangol hats or the J.Lo hats or whatever, I don't think I could pull them off.

Dionysus 03-14-2006 11:08 AM

Maybe this is a regional thing. I see girls wear baseball caps all the time around here, and they aren't considered as trashy.

Peaches-n-Cream 03-14-2006 11:27 AM

I wear hats in the winter to stay warm and in the summer to keep the sun out of my eyes. My cousins in Europe wear hats to church and special occasions like weddings. I like hats. I wish I had more opportunities to wear them. Maybe I should go to the Kentucky Derby or the Easter Parade.

honeychile 03-14-2006 12:03 PM

Okay, I'm missing something - what's the scoop about pink baseball caps?

I think a lot of my "fashion sense" came from when I was in high school. My greataunt bought an entire estate, and gave my mother & I all of the woman's gloves, hats, shoes, and handbags - and they all matched! The funny part is that you could tell that she was once robbed, because every change purse or wallet was sewn onto an elastic strap! Then, as I said, I was playing with some antique hats at a museum, and ended up modeling some of them. I really should have been born in the Victorian era!

The hat that I'm currently flirting with is much like the one that Andie McDowell wore to the first wedding in "Four Weddings and a Funeral".

ETA: Now that I've had my third bout with skin cancer, I've faced that I WILL be wearing some sort of hat, gloves, sunscreen from April to October. :( I figure, I may as well look decent with it. And, I have some really cool antique hat pins!

tinydancer 03-14-2006 12:03 PM

I don't like to wear hats because they smash down my hair. Nothing is worse than smashed curls.

If you go to a baseball game lately, you'll see girls wearing light pink hats with whatever team's logo in white.

I like pink, but they should be in the team's colors.

Just sayin'.

HATE.

Those are usually the girls who know nothing about baseball and just go to try to pick up boys.

HATE.

Pink baseball caps should be banned from life.

The ones I've seen are all white on pink, but maybe that's a Nats thing. This is the Sox.

I always see girls in the pink hats and shirts at the bar during the summer. We make so much fun of them.

I wanted a Polamalu Steelers jersey so bad. However, the only ones i could find were like that.

My father would've disowned me.

That is one of the signs of baseball season - you walk down Brookline Ave. and see a sea of pink hats walking into Beer Works or the Cask. I'm guessing half of them would say their favorite Red Sox player is Nomar.

honeychile 03-14-2006 12:38 PM

I've seen Steelers jerseys in pink, and was wondering if that's what the pink was about. Thank y'all for the clarification!

I hate hats . . . I think anything except baseball caps or winter hats looks ridiculous on ANYONE regardless of gender, honestly.

I have one baseball cap and I wear it very very occasionally.

I'm not going to lie, I like the pink baseball caps, but I would never wear one for fear of getting disowned by all my favorite Red Sox fans.

I think little old men in their 70 year old fedoras are precious.

pinkiebell1001 03-14-2006 01:57 PM

arn't they?:) My grandpa used to wear them all the time, but I don't think anyone else could get away with them:P

One of my most treasured possessions is my grandfather's fedora. He was one of the last great gentlemen, much like Col. Sanders without the chickeny smell!

Okay. You're right.

I meant of my generation.

I think older people can get away with a lot more . . . including fedoras.

Optimist Prime 03-14-2006 02:36 PM

I life fedoras.

I should bring them back.

I am opposed to the pink hats.

I wear baseball hats to the gym but only if I'm just doing weights and no cardio. Who likes to be sweaty in a hat? Once in a while I'll wear one on a weekend day, fully recognizing the fact that the hat doesn't fool anyone if you look like butt.

It remains to be seen whether I ever wear the Vera Bradley hat. I'm thinking it will be a good idea poolside or on the beach, in a feeble attempt to hide from the sun. I also have a Coach hat that I think I've worn once, to a baseball game in the rain.
