Rent for Square Footage?!?!?!
I'm extremely frustrated by the amount of money I pay for rent. So, where do YOU live (and how where it is in proximity to a larger city...unless it IS in a larger city), how many square feet do you have and how much do you pay.
My rent makes me want to shoot the entire housing department at this school! LOL!! So, this is a dorm. I pay $940/month for 350 square feet. This does not include any "board." I pay all utilities except heat, water and sewage (meaning, power, internet, tv, phone, etc.) I also pay for laundry. And, of course, I pay for all meals and such. AH - thanks for letting me vent a bit. ETA: WOOPS! I didn't even follow my own directions. I live about 20 minutes northwest (across the Hudson) of NYC in Rockland County. |
We pay $550 for the mortgage on our 1000+ sq. ft. of house.
The highest I have ever paid was when I lived in a luxury apartment in Nashville. I paid $645 for 1000 sq.ft. Outside of Nashville, one can expect anywhere from $400 and up. Most end up being in the $500s. Where are you that your school charges that much? NYC? |

My rent is $1,110 per month for about 1,000 square feet. Not too bad of a deal. I'm in Orange County between Disneyland and Knotts Berry Farm.
|
yeesh...We pay 720$ a month, for 1000 sq ft (needless to say, the neighborhood isnt that great!) but the utilities are included, and when you use as much as we do (we're an electronics family;)) that's not bad, especially in the middle of Dallas!

Oooooooh, the OC! :) |
dorm at NYU, ie. prime real estate on washington square park...
WOW, checking the website... $10,470. includes internet access/AC-heat, cable, local telephone service, water, AND we get complimentary toile paper... however, i dont know how much square footage my room is. but its typically a double (and sometimes a triple) in my building, so technically im getting 2-3 times my money's worth. then again, i'm an RA so i guess it adds up to $0/aquare foot? trust me, im enjoying it while it lasts... may 11, 2006. |

I live in Boston - hence, my apartment, while nice, is overpriced.
|
I pay $706 for a 688 sq. ft. 1 bedroom in a yuppie apartment complex in suburbian Pittsburgh (about $1.026 per sq. ft). Gated access, gas fireplace, cathedral ceilings, in-suite washer and dryer, all new appliances, pool, clubhouse with gym facilities and brunch every Sunday, 24 hour maintenance, etc. and also includes sewage/water (which I think nearly all apartments include.)
Last year I was in a 2 bedroom 2 bath in the same complex where we paid a total of $828 for 1002 sq. ft. (about $0.83 per sq ft) Location, location, location is what it's all about. There are shitholes in the yuppie areas of the city (i.e. within city limits) that cost tons more than my nice place in the 'burbs. |
I live in a small 3 bedroom home, in a gated community in Cape Canaveral, FL. We are 1,000 ft. from the Ocean, have 2 community (1 heated) swimming pools, raquetball, tennis courts, and a beautiful "jungle book" environment with wild peacocks and a lot of wild life.
We pay $850.00 a month. Granted, our landloard hasn't raised the rent on us in 5 years. Many of the townhomes are now going for $1400 a month, but we live in one of the few non-attatched houses. **edited** to add, we have about 980 sq ft. |

I live in Columbia, MO and I pay $760 for 1400 sq. feet. It's a huge apartment...and I live alone, a little unnecessary but I like it...and my utilities and cable/internet are included.
|
I feel like such a cheapskate compared to some of yall.
I pay $381 for about 650 sq ft. It's in a nice neighborhood (Its just my apartment complex that sits on the river with a view of the park on the other side). I do get a discount because of where I work, so it normally runs at about $425. I live in Wichita, Kansas (pop. 350K) I'm plannng on buying a house next year so I'm enjoying the cheapness while it last (although I'm anticipating that my mortage shouldn't be anymore than an extra $200-$300 a month). |

So what city is it? La Palma? Stanton? Somewhere between the area of the well lit 5 and the 91? De La Ghetto? Dude. It's not the Disneyland Fireworks you're hearing at night. It's gunshots Oh well. You should be use to it. If you can survive Pomona, you can survive anywhere. |
I live in suburban Minneapolis, about 10 miles from downtown.
I pay $879 a month for a 688 sq ft 1 bedroom. This includes underground parking, FREE CABLE, a fireplace, a dishwasher, an in-unit stacked washer and dryer, clubhouse (with a meeting room, indoor/outdoor swimming pool, saunas, fitness center, and racquetball court), and the complex abuts a huge park! I love where I live - when I was in Milwaukee I lived downtown and paid $450/month for a really crappy 400 sq ft studio that hadn't been renovated since about 1940. |
I pay $710 for a 900 sq. foot apartment. All my utilities are separate. I live in a gated complex in Atlanta, off of Cobb Parkway.
I used to live Midtown, and paid $535 for a 500 sq. foot apartment. I hated it, it felt like a closet. When I lived in Minneapolis, I paid $710 for a 2 bedroom that was about 1200 sq. feet. |
Currently my apartment is $850/month (discounted price with move-in specials) this is for 950 sq. feet and water/sewer included. These are older apartments by great location in the west end of richmond.
When I was at school in Blacksburg, VA it varied, but was fairly cheap.. freshman dorm $2,346/year all utilities incl. on campus sorority house $2,936/year all utilities incl. off campus one year my rent was $420 with all utilities included and another it was $270/month.. these were both good sized apartments (but for the 270 one my room was much smaller) |
When we lived in Atlanta, Midtown we had a 1,200sf apt and the rent was right at $1200. It did not include any utilities.
Now we live in a house in Alpharetta and pay for what we have. |

the apartment styles range from $11k-almost $16k per academic year. |
I apy $1300 for 1000sf in West Hollywood, CA. All utilities separate. No pool or other bldg ammenties. It is rent controlled, though. Current rate on my 1 bed in my bldg is $1900.
|
I pay $695 for 650 square feet. I live in Sacramento.
|
I pay $630 for about 700 square feet in Lansing, MI. That includes cable and free heat, it's a one bedroom apartment.
Currently I'm saving up so that wherever I land next I'll be able to buy, I hope. |

When I lived in D.C. I paid approximately $1150 per month for my 650 sq ft apt in Alexandria. We had a shuttle to the metro which was fantastic so I only took about 10 min to get to work in the morning.

Okay, I have 1500 sq. feet, 3 bed, 1 3/4 bath (one is shower stall only), and a 2 car garage for $1450, no utilities.
(Though I realize this is cheap for the majority of the country, Norman or Edmond areas are pretty expensive compared to the rest of OK.) |
My address is technically Marietta GA, but I could throw a stick and it land in Atlanta, so go figure....
I have an 800sq ft single bedroom apt, and I pay $539 a month for it. Water, trash and sewage is about $35.00. Gas/electric combined is anywhere from $75-$150 per month(depending on the season). Extended Cable/Internet is $95.00. total of $744-$819 per month. Oh wait, not including laundry - which is a dollar per load to wash and dry - so thats probably another $20 or so per month. |

Here you pay $1 a square foot for an average apartment.
One would plan to pay $1.20 - $1.25 for an upscale or really new apartment community. Of course utilities would be extra |
I live in Fairfax, VA. My townhouse is 1,742 square feet, and we pay $1800 rent a month...which is a steal, considering that the owner is paying a $3200 a month mortgage. For this area, compared to all of my friends, my rent is ridiculously cheap for how big my house is. Thank god there is no renter's market right now! In my last house, my rent got lowered twice in the 6 months I lived there because our landlord was being fair to the other renters prices on our street.
It is crazy to think that a 3 bedroom townhouse has a listing price of $579, 900 though! As for utilities, it comes to about $200-$300 a month. |
