Attn smokers

Most everyone I know smokes Marlboro Lights or Camel Lights. When I do smoke, I prefer Marlboro Lights. People who like cheaper cigarettes may smoke Parliaments. I know that's not the answer to most of your questions, but it's a start.

Also consider menthol vs. regular? I hate menthol cigarettes but that's all some people will smoke.

Need some help for a story.

We have different cigarette brands here in Canada, and my story is set in the US and I need a little info for a scene where the characters all talk about their cigarette preferences.

What brands are most common and what would you expect to see teenagers smoking circa the mid 80s to 90s? Do particular brands have a particular image? What would you be more likely to see older people smoke vs younger, or girls vs guys? Would certain brands be more popular with certain ethnic groups (and for what reason do you think)? What about cigarette sizes, light vs regular vs ultra etc etc.

What would you say the big differences are with different brands etc?

(And if any of you are...cross border smokers lol...what brands in Canada do you think are close to American brands, like if you couldn't get your Canadian brand in the US, which would be closest to yours?)

Most common for teenagers in 90s: Newport or Marlboro

Brand image: Marlboro are more expensive yet with the Marlboro man I guess it might be seen as a "tougher" cigarette. Virginia Slims and Capri seem more girlie. Newports are kinda neutral, and kinda cheap.

I don't see many men smoking lights, at least in this area when we're out at the bar. That could also have to do with gender and a "tough" image. Who knows. I'm making this all up according to my experience and what I've seen.

I was a "social smoker" in the early 90s, and I usually smoked Camel lights, but once in a while I'd smoke menthols -- really, really horrible. There was always a big Camel/Marlboro split. Most people I knew smoked Camels and wouldn't touch Marlboros.

FWIW, Mr. valkyrie smokes American Spirits -- they're "100% additive-free natural tobacco." I smoke like 12 cigarettes a year, but actually like these and they don't make the car smell as bad as other cigarettes. If he can't get those for whatever reason, he smokes Camels. I don't know how common these were in the past -- or where. I'd never heard of them in Chicago but they're fairly common around here -- so it also depends on where your story is taking place.

My cousin smokes American Spirits. She loves them. I tried one, and I think the main reason I didn't like it is because I've been smoking menthol for so long. I should really get away from it though... well smoking altogether but menthol first.

33girl 03-11-2006 02:37 PM

Mid 80's to 90's - girls smoked Salems, VA Slims or Marlboro Lights.

Guys smoked regular Marlboros or Camels.

Trailer trash smoked Newports.

:p

Incidentally - I smoke Parliaments now, and they're really not that much cheaper than Marlboros. Maybe that's a state to state thing.

Peaches-n-Cream 03-11-2006 02:43 PM

Cigarettes cost between $6 and $7 per pack now in NYC. I hear they're cheaper everywhere else.

In the 80s the girls with the big Aquanet hair smoked Marlboro Lights. Those girls frightened me.

I don't remember any guys I knew smoking since they were athletic.

Jill1228 03-11-2006 02:57 PM

I quit smoking in February 1997. My smoke of choice was Marlboro lights 100s. Occasionally I would smoke Camel Lights.

On the rare occasions I smoked a menthol, it would be Salem Slim lights or Virginia Slims lights 120s

My sister smokes Newport 100s...back when I was smoking I would rather go without a cigarette than smoke a Newport! Blech!

I don't like Parliament for some reason. I think the filter freaks me out. Why is that space there?

PNC... yeah they are way cheaper elsewhere. We get them for about $5 here. My friends that went on Spring Break got them for like $2 a pack down in Panama city. Lucky bitches. My uncle goes to Ohio and Kentucky sometimes and gets them for cheaper. It's all about that cigarette tax.

When I smoke, I love Parliaments FOR the filter...I can't smoke regular cigarettes now, they feel weird. I like to bite on the filter and pretend that my teeth are staying white b/c I do that (in reality it's b/c I bleach them, prob. too much and I don't really smoke unless I'm drinking anyway)

And where on earth are Parliaments cheaper than Marlboro's etc? They seem to be more expensive wherever I go?

I was in that split in the late 90s. I would not TOUCH a Marlboro. I remember thinking they smelled horrible, but Camel's smelled nice or something. Weird, I know.

The cig I smoked for the longest was Camel Ultralight 100s.

Tom Earp 03-11-2006 06:13 PM

Marllboro=Philip Morris Pronounces it self as The King of Cigs.

Whites usaully go for In My Shop Marlboros or Winston! If not that, the Cheapest Cigs. GPC, Basic, Dorals, ETC!

Blacks Prefer Menthol such as Newport or Kools.

Younger kids who want to emulate will do Menthol! Cant stand them Myself!:(

Being in the in Group means going with the peer presure!

When I smoked, we were all about the Parliaments...maybe because we were pretend Eurotrash and tried a little too hard. Oh, those and Galouises (sp?). The boy smokes some types of Camels.

In the 80s, I think most people smoked Marlboro Reds.

Most people in Europe roll their own cigarettes because manufactured ones are ungodly expensive, especially in the UK.

Haha yes, I smoked those, too. I even smoked Virginia Slims 110s on occasion -- OH TEH HORROR.

Aries, whether your characters would like Marlboros or Camels really depends on several factors, heh.

Also, teenagers in the working class suburbs of Chicago tended to smoke Newports, or so I hear.

Every time I go to Europe, I'm always coughing because of the public smoking. That and the dogs allowed in restaurants!

This conversation of smoking is too elite for you. Be gone with your negativity out of our thread.

_Opi_ 03-13-2006 01:52 AM

Over here it's Marlboro ultra lights and in Canada I smoke players extra light.

I noticed that alot of people smoke newports menthols here...I can not stand them.

grizzlyWG 03-13-2006 03:07 AM

Be Men and put in nice Large dips of Grizzly Wintergreen. THere is no satisfaction greater than putting in a huge dip right after...good meals, sex, studying, etc.

kstar 03-13-2006 04:42 AM

Around here it seems that the cow ropers all smoked Marlboros.

The stoners smoked weed, and the goths smoked clove cigs.

Most others I knew prefered Camels, especially some of their more exotic blends.

This was in the late 90s.

Now, it seems that everyone I know smokes Camel Filters.

USCTKE 03-13-2006 07:42 AM

in high school everyone I knew that smoked smoked Newports with a few exceptions...but then again that is what they could get for cheap from the crack heads at my school

pretty much everyone I know now smokes Marlboro Lights, a few smoke camels though

the first time I ever smoked a Parliment it freaked me out...of course I was a bit intoxicated at the time

Haha Players Extra Light. Love the box... but love the "warnings" on the box even more, especially the one about smoking causing impotence and the picture of the limp cigarette!

Hahaha, that's my favourite warning. I smoke Matinees or DuMaurier when I'm home. When I was in Cleveland a few monts ago and I ran out of my smokes I had to find another brand. Mr. Pi Phi went into a gas station and asked the attendant for girlie cigarettes for me. The attendant gave him Misty Slims. They were alright, very light and I don't like slim cigarettes. I really missed my brand.

PiKA2001 03-13-2006 11:37 PM

DuMauriers are nasty, well most cigarettes are nasty but Canadian ones I think are horrible. I would always make sure that at the border I stopped for smokes so I wouldn't have to buy Canadian ones.

ladygreek 03-14-2006 12:57 AM

I smoke (unfortunately) Virginia Slims Menthol Ultra-Lights.

And Tom, while the Black men I know smoke Newports (not even Kools so much any more) the Black women I know smoke VSs.

And at first I was offended by your statement, but then I realized that is the reality of what I have seen. I wonder why?

I think it has to do with how and to whom these products are marketed.

ladygreek 03-14-2006 10:49 AM

Interesting.

I don't think it has to do so much with whether Canadian cigarettes are better or worse than American (taste wise that is) as it has to do with what you are used to and prefer. At home, my brand is Matinee but I'll smoke my boyfriend's DuMaurier if I run out and I don't mind them. I'll smoke Belmont's at the bar if I run out because Belmont's and Benson and Hedge's are all they will sell and I don't like B & H.

Take beer for example. I can't stand American beer. I had a Samuel Adams at a restaurant in Cleveland one evening and it was so disgusting that I couldn't finish it. On our way back to the hotel we stoped at a store and picked up some Canadian beer (Export - I don't really like that either but my boyfriend does), but I will drink it over an American beer any day. But if I had always been drinking American beer I might really enjoy it because that what I know and what I am used to.

"Tobacco companies deliberately marketed these products in predominantly African American and Hispanic communities. In fact, back in the 1940s, the cigarette makers were among the first to use images and messages aimed specifically to minority audiences. Targeted advertising helped Kool become the top brand among African Americans in the 1960s, and propelled Newport to that spot three decades later."

The article itself is a pdf file at http://www.whitelies.tv/files/news/NewsBriefs_44.pdf

Not suprising....I know I am not the only one who remembers the Kool and Newport ads on the back of Jet. The people in them were always cute and having lots of fun doing things like having a water gun fight or rollerskating or on a picnic.

Most of my older cousins smoked Kool back in the late 70s

Glad You agree.

It is funny to see the mix of Peeps and what they smoke for sure.:)

Not all Blacks smoke Menthol and not all whites smoke non-menthol. Tobacco is Regional as any product is.

Brand Names such as Maralboro being the best example have factorys all over, USA, (Asia,Canada, Mexico and Europe), but the mix is different than what We as USAs are accustomed to. Canadians seem to be harsher.

Camel, whil not big in my store is supposed to be a blend of American and Turkish tobaccos. Turkish is supposed to be a smoother blend.

Indonesioans or the Clove Brands are lovely if You are a casual smoker, cannot do them as much as regular tobacco.

Now have Cherry, Vanilla, Mint ETC! I like for a change once in a while! Oh, just the regular cloves!

Menthols are not targeted in Black Publications only but many others.

I just cant do Menthol at all!

Optimist Prime 03-15-2006 10:55 AM

I like cloves. Turkish cloves were my favorite ever.
