What book(s) are you reading now? I am reading Sister Secrets by Breggie James.

ZetaAce 02-02-2001 12:09 PM

I wish I was reading ANYTHING that wasn't work related. I don't even have time to read magazines lately...

How's Sister Secrets?

I'm always reading romance novels. I like the Arabesque series. I just love reading black romance novels.

Chi_ZETABBW 02-03-2001 03:47 AM

I just bought 3 books:
Divine Nine
A Day Late, A Dollar Short(Terry McMillian)
Roberts Rule
Will proably read in that order.

If you haven't gotten it, try "10 bad choices that ruin black women's lives" by Dr. Grace Cornish. The title is in all lower caps, with her picture on the front. Very good.

Robert Rules of Order -a must have for any active soror!

"The Maintenance Man" by Michael B.

I read all of e. lynn harris' books. I am looking for a new book to get into, though!

The Sisters of Theta Phi Kappa
Satin Doll
Let the People Decide (history of community organizing)

shannieglass 10-01-2001 03:06 PM

I am starting The Justus Girls

PrettyKitty 10-02-2001 04:26 PM

I picked up 3 books:
Makes Me Wanna Holla by Nathan McCall
Sisters and Brothers by Bebe Moore Campbell
Losing the Race by McWhorter

sistermoon 10-03-2001 02:24 PM

I'm picking up the latest Laura Esquievel book this weekend. She is the author of Like Water for Chocolate. I just completed the Walter Mosely book, not bad if you like mysteries.

MSTISHA25 10-03-2001 05:15 PM

I just finished reading Sorority Sisters by Tajuana Butler. It was a good book about 5 girls from different backgrounds wanting to pledge the same sorority (AKA). It went through the things that happens during the pledge process and their relationships with their boyfriends...It was good even though I'm not that fond of the colors...Also Zeta Ace I turned in my Letter of Interest for the Graduate Chapter...Wish me luck.

KappaStargirl 10-03-2001 06:44 PM

Being a librarian, I am so very happy to see this thread!

I am loving the Stephanie Plum series (One for the Money, Two for the Dough, etc), by Janet Evanovich. Normally, I'm not a mystery reader, but these are HILARIOUS and a good time for all.

Since my main job is working with teenagers, I read mostly teen novels. I have to highly recommend Stuck in Neutral, by Terry Trueman, about a genius boy with cerebral palsy who believes his father is going to kill him, and Fever 1793, by Laurie Halse Anderson, about the yellow fever epidemic in Philadelphia in 1793.

And of course the perennial favorite: A Southern Belle Primer, or Why Princess Margaret Will Never Be a Kappa Kappa Gamma.

What do the colors have to do with anything???

Enforcer00 10-03-2001 11:02 PM

I just recently finished Zora Neale Hurston's autobiography (I know, I know, I should have read it a long time ago :o) and am working on The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. Also, all kinds of baby stuff now that my sister is expecting.

The colors didn't have anything to do with the rating of the book. I did not intend to offend anyone. I was stating my like or dislike for a color and pink has never been a color that I liked no matter what organization the color represents. I am sorry that you took what I said the wrong way. I have friends and family members who represent and like the color pink, but they know that it has never been a favorite of mine from my tomboy days. Again, I am sorry if anyone was offended by my comment.:)

DOVE1920 10-09-2001 03:09 PM

I wasn't personally offended I just couldn't understand your logic for putting that in your post.:)

SoTrue1920 10-09-2001 03:36 PM

Cane River

I'm reading "Cane River" by Lalita Tademy. I know it was an "Oprah" selection, but I'm reading it in spite of that fact :D

I'm only on chapter 6, but so far it's an engaging and informative read.

DopeZeta 10-09-2001 08:10 PM

I am reading "The Brethren" by John Grisham. It's very, very good.

wannabez 10-10-2001 12:00 PM

what are you reading

i'm reading toms, coons, mulattoes, mammies, and bucks an interpretive history of african american in american film by donald bogle. i'm in the eary beginning but it is filled with interesting things.

Steeltrap 10-10-2001 12:06 PM

I'm reading Straight No Chaser: How I Became a Grown-Up Black Woman by Jill Nelson, after finding it in a closeout bookstore.
I'd read Volunteer Slavery, her first book, when it came out about seven years ago or so. Volunteer Slavery is an all-time favorite of mine.

MIDWESTDIVA 10-10-2001 01:37 PM

I recently read No Disrespect by Sister Souljah.

SoTrue,

Why you gotta be an Oprah hater? :p

Soror, after you read this, I'd like to hear your impressions of it, especially in light of recent events. I read the book a couple of months ago, and I can't help coming back to it in my head since Sept. 11.

The list is long... but I have respect for her in that she managed to do something that others haven't been able to do on a widespread scale -- she made reading (and critical reading at that) cool again. For that, she gets many props in my book.

But I'm so darned contrary anyway -- even if I like the books she selects, I read them well after the fact just cause I don't want to be seen as a member of the Church of Oprah. ;)

OhSoVeryLadylike 10-10-2001 08:45 PM

I am a BOOK-A-HOLIC

I just finished For the Love of Money the sequel to Omar Tyree's Flyy Girl it was good, not as good as the first but good. I also love Arabesque novels as a filler when I can't find lengthier books to read. I have read most of the books on this list. Including most books by non-African Americans. The V.C. Andrews collections are great reads.
Flowers in the Attic
The Wildflowers Series, If there be Thorns, etc.
I am now reading "The Partner" by John Grisham, so far it is very good.

DOVE1920 10-12-2001 01:11 AM

Reading is FUNdamental!

Yes I agree that "For the Love of Money" was nowhere as good as "Flyy Girl". Sequels never turn out right! I finished the Sisters of Theta Phi Kappa. It was aiiight. I haven't picked up a new book because I'm working on midterms.:(

Special1920 10-13-2001 12:49 AM

I'm enjoying it too, but it wasn't as good as I expected. I found myself rooting for Emily and Joseph.. and I was very disappointed how their relationship turned out.

blueberi1920 10-13-2001 07:59 PM

I just read The Red Moon, Tuwana Hausley ( I probably spelled the name wrong though) It's a book about a girl coming of age in Kenya. It deals with female genital mutilation, inter-cultural relationships, college life amog other things. Very good book, I couldn't put it down.

All,

Has anyone used www.blackexpressions.com? What are some other good general book clubs to join, if any? I have more time to read fiction now, and want to take advantage!

Shelacious,

Blackexpressions is pretty decent..though there are times that they take a while sending the books that you order. That is a rare occurrence though. You should join, they have a pretty good membership special going..some of the books are reasonable.

Azul 10-21-2001 12:59 AM

I just finished The Wind Done Gone.

I am still stuck on Bebe Moore Campbell's book...I think I might have to skip her and move on to Nathan McCall...the story is taking waaaaaaay too long to pick up

I just finished the Sisters of TPK and I didn't really understand why it had that title. The story didn't really have anything to do with a sorority. There seems to be a lot of books floating around now about greek life. I saw a list of more in the issue of Essence with Ananda on the cover.

aprilzeta 10-24-2001 01:04 AM

I'm currently reading, "Any Way The Wind Blows." I can't read this book fast enough. I can't wait to see how it ends.

I know how you feel, I stayed up late to finish the book. ( If only I was the same way for my readings for class )
I can't believe Ava!
