Mitchells will always be, in my heart, the frattiest of fratty bars. I'm assuming that "fratty" is meant is a compliment, right? ('Cause when I was in college it referred to boys who would get all excited to go to a mixer, down J&C all night and then be mortified with they went too hook up with a young woman and found that his, um, equipment had gone to sleep and would not be waking up soon. Brian from Kappa Alpha Order at UVA: I'm talking to you, son. I have to give credit to Mary Lee for regaling us with some very entertaining stories when she got back from Charlottesville the next day :) So, I'm assuming Fratty is now a GOOD thing?????)
Anyhoo, back to Mitchells. It was a dive. A bit out of our comfort zone since it was within spitting distance from the Hill District, where scary, mean locals lived. It always smelled like stale beer, the booths were covered in red naugahyde and duct tape. But every monday night after 9, it would fill to the gills with everyone who was anyone in the Greek system. I spent my 21st birthday in the back booth surrounded by sisters and "fratty" admirers and, although I don't remember exactly how I got back to my room, I was perfectly fine and untouched. Well, except for the court jester's had that said "Kiss me I'm 21" on it  Pittsters, is this place even there anymore? It was on the corner of Center Avenue and, damn, I can't recall the cross street. Right across the street from a Giant Eagle. |
I like sh*tty hole in the wall dives....great atmospheres.
On a serious note, this thread could be good, hopefully it wont get deleted. |
Do you go to school in Tuscaloosa? My paternal grandfather went to college at UA and he would tell us about the crazy things he and his brothers would do at this one dive who's name I CANNOT remember! I talked to him shortly before he passed on a couple of years ago and he mentioned it in a story saying it's still there to this day but I can't remember. And of course, my grandmother, poor misplaced belle that she is, either won't tell me or can't remember! (she's pretty sharp, so I'd bet the former!)
|
well, galettes is pretty much a dive. pretty nasty place. pissing on the walls, pretty much anything you could think of
|
What you refer to is medically diagnosed as "Whiskey Dick". To make sure others used that term, I searched a dictionary and found the definition:

If you go to Kent then you already know, the answer is Glory Days.

Do you know if it was it there in the late Thirties? |
you fratty guys picked a cool moderator to have a conversation with.
KillarneyRose is a milf. |

Is there still a bar in Kent called the Rathskellar? I once spent the weekend at my best friend from high school and we went there with a bunch of her sisters. I had a great time until her roommate came up to me and asked if I could please put my lavalliere in my pocket and wear her lavalliere for the night (back before drinking in letters was the deal it is today) so that people wouldn't know I was a member of a sorority that was apparently not "top tier" there. I would have told her what do do with her lavalliere, but I felt that would be disrespectful to my best friend andall of my friends back in that sorority at Pitt so I just ignored her. Oh, and the next night we went to a party at a place called the University Motel. I think it was one of those charge by the hour places! Fun times, though. |
I think the most fratty bar here is the G-man. Interestingly, it's not a dive bar. It's more of a popped collar kind of bar...total sausage fest. I think it's the only bar in town that the line for the mens' room is longer than the line for the ladies' room.
Myself, I'm personally a dive bar kinda girl...the kind of bar that's darkly lit and has wooden tables and benches (all carved up with peoples' initials and names and dates of bar tours). |

State College is just too damn clean!!! ;) |
KR, Mitchell's is on Centre & Melwood. I remember well a sister sitting in a shopping buggy going much too fast the wrong way down Melwood, ending up on the Phi Kap lawn!
I liked the Luna, but that was before it moved. In fact, you know how you always sent those "our sister is a sweetheart of XYZ" to your national magazine? They sent my name & photo into the Adelphean as "The Moon Goddess"! I had some real explaining to do! Been to the Silver Dollar a few times, good times. |
Quote:
Oh geez, the Luna!!! I'd only gone there a couple of times; it was pretty much owned by the 9th floor gals and their preppy admirers from the Hill with their noses surgically attached to the girls' butts. Ugh. Not my scene. Plus, no way would I ever sit on those stools after those women had unless I had some kind of antibacterial seat cushion! |

KR - we forgot the Wooden Keg! Three drinks for a dollar on a Friday afternoon - I will never drink tequila again! |
Quote:
I went there on my 21st birthday and demanded to be carded. It's also known as the night I reached nirvana! |
Quote:
Oooh, and of course ZELDA'S with its quarter draft nights! And Calico's with all my beloved SAEs buying my Jack and Coke all night! I think it's called something else now. The Decade, the Sanctuary (a gothic dive!), the Upstage (lesbian nite every Wednesday! just sayin' is all) Oakland is just so sanitary now or something. Blah. |
I'm trying to think of the name of a place at UVA (I was ROTFL when you talked about Brian!) that was SO nasty, guys didn't bother with the restroom, they used a corner of the bar. blech. It was an experience, but THE place to be, post meeting.
Did you ever get to the Transportation Club? It was like that! |

And I know the motel you're talking about, it has since become the "Tally Ho" motel. |
those are the best kind of places to be
|
As anyone who went to W&L or worked at KA or Sigma Nu headquarters will know, The Palms in Lexington Virginia is definitely one of the all-time most fratty bars I've ever been to. Oh so many happy hours spent there!
|
The Palms...
I spent a week up at W&L one summer for the Sigma Nu College of Chapters (I think in '00?). It was a good time. The Palms was good to us. |

there is absolutely, positively, NO frattier (if that's a good thing) bar than the University Inn in 1988-89. Especially upstairs on Sunday after spring break. SIGH good times.
The G-Man? I think we usually avoided that place and went to the Lion's Den. Mitchell's is still there but the Dirty Bird (aka the Giant Eagle) is closed now I think. Zelda's, The Decade, Caleco's (now Fuel & Fuddle) are all gone, the Upstage is kinda hanging on but the last time I went there it was all ages. ew. Where was the Luna before? Oh, and I heart Chief's. :) |

For me, it's all about The Corner Bar. |

The only time I saw The Palms, I was too young to go in. Now, I feel deprived!
33, the Luna was on the corner, as in, the doorway was on an angle between Centre & N. Craig. The building's still there, but it's not the Luna. And what they're calling the Luna most certainly is NOT "The Luna"!! I have a friend who was at the Decade when Bruce Springsteen was a nobody! She got to know him (and South Side Johnny), and when they're in her town (her husband was transferred to Switzerland, then San Diego), they actually ask her up on the stage to sing with them! |

No, it's still called The Luna, and it's on the same block of N. Craig - across from Chiefs. It's nothing like it used to be, though.

Also, I hate it when you don't pick your Photo Hunt partners wisely and you get some novice looking over your shoulder and just touching the screen all willy-nilly and you are trying to be nice because they are your friend but really you just wanna say "Stop f*cking up my game, thanks". |

I mean, its like your fratty guys but no girls. Still, Gman still has decent drinks. Pickles is becoming fratty too. Me, I'm a Players/Club Love person with stops at the Skeller, Mad Mex, Sportscafe, Cafe 210, and the Den. |

Yah I am real professional about photohunt too. |
