Ash Wednesday: Lenten Fasting
What are you going without for 40 days?
Even though I am not Catholic, it was always a tradition in our household to give up something. This year, I'm going without fried foods. oh boy! :D |
I am Anglican/Episcopal and we observe Lent also. I am a HUGE beef person so I have always went without beef...very hard. But this year I have upped the ante. I am going w/o unhealthy food period. That means no hamburgers, hot dogs (unless turkey dog) and everything Bahamian lol. I am so screwed. lol But I also am working on my stomach before I go to Europe in 3 weeks so this will work just fine.
|
I've given up sugar and white flour. OH how I want chocolate and bread right now! lol
|
I am giving up procrastination! Its gonna be tough, but hey, last year I gave up music videos, and it really has carried on... And I really need procrastination to be out of my life... Or at least extremely modified.
|
I gave up coffee this year and it is going to be TOUGH. I am studying for the MPRE this week (lawyer ethics exam and yes you have to study, no its not common sense) and taking it a week from Saturday....I NEED MY COFFEE.
Additionally, I have class at 5:30 pm this semester and up until now it has been my tradition to visit Starbucks for an extra energy kick oh around 4:45......SACRIFICE!!! |

I'm giving up fast food. This is going to be soooooo hard because I find it difficult to cook for one person. I don't leave work until 7:00 or 8:00 and the last thing I want to do is cook a meal when it's so easy to go to McDonalds. Plus this will allow me to lose some weight, save money, and try out some new recipes.
|
I am giving up all drinks besides PLAIN WATER. That includes coffee, tea, juice, Kool-Aid, punch, alcohol, soft drinks, etc. I hardly drink enough water because I am addicted to flavor. I will drink almost anything before I drink water. I HATE WATER!! But, I need to do this to cleanse myself. Therefore, that's the plan. Water, water, water....
I also gave up eating out. Since I am a broke student, I don't have money to burn, YET I am at the coffeeshop EVERY day, Popeyes, Chilis, etc. Aside from wasting money, my waistline is paying for it. Therefore, only healthy, home prepared meals for me. Lastly, I am gviving up laziness. I am going to forgo my daily two hour nap after class and get back to working out! After 40 days and nights of Tae Bo, Yoga Booty Ballet, healthy meals, and some good, clean, crisp water, I will be back in the game!! :D |
Just curious how AA on here are Catholic or Anglican/Episcopalian?
|
I'm Episcopalian.
|
I am not Catholic, but I'm observing Lent for the first time. I'm giving up soda. This is a big thing for me.
|
I'm not Catholic either, but I have attended Catholic schools from elementary to high school so some of the Catholic traditions have stuck with me.
I'm giving up sweets and all beverages except H20. Why did I bake a cake on fat Tuesday? I've almost single handedly finished that cake. I'm throwing the rest away as soon as I finish typing this. Wishing everyone well on their lenten commitments.:) |
I am a Bapto/palian. :D
I was Christened as a baby in the Episcopal church. Then my family changed churches and started going to a Baptist church which is where I was eventually baptized. However, from ages 5-12 I went to Episcopal Day School where we attended "Chapel" every Wednesday. Now that I have moved away I am more inclined to go to an Episcopal church because they are all the same and I am often disappointed by Baptist churches I go to because they are not like my "home." As such, I am pretty much both Baptist and Episcopalian which effectively means I am a pretty open minded Baptist that observes the liturgical calender, hence my Lenten fasting. |
:D @ Bapto/palian
|
Instead of giving something up, this year I am DOING something. I will be exercisng every day until the end of Lent. In past years I've been so good at giving things up that I'm running out of bad habits!
|
I am not Catholic...
but I am giving up SODA for lent this year...:p I gave it up last year as well & it was a struggle, PEPSI is my anti-drug...:)
|
AA & Catholic
Yep, I'm catholic . . I went to catholic schools all my life . . when I tranfered colleges sophomore year, that was the first public school that I ever went to . . .
With all that said I feel sooo bad you guys . . . I've been stuck on campus and where I am there are no Roman Catholic churches for me to attend Mass. . As you can guess, I kinda got out of the "going to mass" routine (not that it should become a routine). I 've been drowning in so much work that it wasn't untill yesterday that I even realized that Lent, ash Wends. and all of that had already arrived :( I really need to find the Lord's house again yall . . .He hasn't left my heart, and I dont think that you always need to go to church to have church, but I think it's about time I stop by his house to pay Him a visit :) |

I'm a "Cathodist"
Born UMC, converted to RC, then went back to UMC after marrying a UMC Preacher's Kid....
I am a political animal so I'm giving up my unhealthy addiction to a certain political messageboard and substituting that time with Bible study. |
I was raised Roman Catholic and even though I'm more of a non-denominational evangelical, I still observe Lent.
This year, I'm giving up FRIED FOOD. It's going to be hard because I LOVE french fries but I need to get out of the habit. I need to be eating healthier anyway since I've been diagnosed with mild celiac disease. |
I am giving up all meat and poultry.
|
I'm Episcopalian and I have been trying to figure out what to give up. I'm a grad student and my life is so structured that I have little time for "bad" habits. (I'm not saying I'm perfect by any stretch of the imagination!) I normally give up soda, but I've pretty much stopped drinking it...so I think I will also give up procrastinatiton like another person mentioned (which for me means limited facebook!) and I'm going to swim at least 2 days a week.
|
the big one
I'm fasting from...
Facebook!! It sucks! Now I realize how addicted I really was! |
I also decided to give up ice cream. not HUGE vice, ie every day, but something that will be hard to not have for an entire 40 days.
|
I am not Catholic but I do observe Lent and this year's sacrifice is coffee and doughnuts. I didn't drink nary a DROP of coffee until I moved to Florida and started working for DCF and got amongst the other investigators who guzzled coffee by the gallon and ate doughnuts by the dozen. I gained 10 pounds during the 6 weeks that I was in training. So now, I replaced coffee with green tea and the doughnuts with those itty-bitty Weight Watchers cakes. And I do mean itty-bitty. Also during Lent, when I give up one bad habit, I also pick up a good one. Since I've been discharged from my bankruptcy, I have started budgeting my money more effectively as well as paying my bills AHEAD of time!! Even though I can't hop on down to Torrid or the Coach store, I feel better knowing that I actually have money between paydays and that my son's daycare tuition is paid on time and I don't get those looks from the director anymore. :o

I'm Baptist
I am currently on a 40 day water/juice fast which has done wonders for my life. It has improved my spiritual life as well. I feel 100% better both spiritually and physically. I have been saying I want to start eating better and this has been a great motivator. Now I will be more mindful of what I put in my 'temple.' If I can go this long without junk food and fried foods then I really don't need those things. Also it has brought me and my family & friends closer because a group of us are all fasting at the same time. I have always fasted regularly but this is the longest fast I've done. So this was a challenge for me. 1-3 days is a breeze compared to 40! I had to do some serious prayer to prepare for this. It hasn't been anywhere near as hard as I thought that it would. |

So, you're doing water/juice only all day? |
I'm Catholic. I'm giving up secular sentiments. I'm will live according to Biblical intrepretations instead of secular ones which sometimes are in conflict.
So..., to the lady who tried to cut me off when leaving church, I pause and let her inch into traffic...... (instead of moving my car up and acting like I don't see her!!!:o |
I'm Methodist. I'm giving up coffee. Since going back to graduate school, I have become addicted. I figure that giving up Starbucks would be a sacrifice. My thoughts were confirmed after going through midterms last week without coffee.

Thanks and don't I need it?   is right. LOL, It takes a lot of prayer! Believe it or not there are some people who are only doing water for 30, 40 or 60 days! |
I'm Episcopalian = Anglican
I've given up "giving up" something for Lent a long, long time ago. For the past decade or so, I've always tried to pray more & make more of the Lenten services. I try to make both services on Sundays (we have a 10:45a.m. regular mass & a 5p.m. Joint Lenten Service with participating congregations), a mid-week service and Friday's Stations of the Cross. Whew, but then again, what's giving God this time when I am so very, very blessed!
Have a fabulous Lent. |
Catholic, and I gave up alcohol and pizza.

I'm Catholic and I gave up sugar and bread. Man I'm hungry...
|
I'm Catholic, though not strictly practicing. I gave up alchohol. :) I feel so good not drinking.
|
I'm glad to see many of you ladies reserving the Lenten season in your own ways. I was discussing this topic with some friends from Baptist/Methodist churches and they were looking at me like I was an alien because I was a black Catholic. I told them were not such an anomaly of existence.
Anyhow back to the topic I gave up sweets and put some extra dedication into reflection on the blessing the Lord has bestowed upon me. |
Catholic - I'm giving up snacking after dinner. It's a horrible habit of mine that I do out of boredom more than hunger.
|
I'm Baptist, but our church always fast 30 days prior to Easter for health, finance and family.
I'm giving beef, pork, fast foods, rice, and potatoes. |
Anglican- Firstly I LOVE to eat. So I would suffer most form taking away my favourite foods. I gave up beef:( and for those of you familiar with it Conch:( :( . I'm Bahamian so giving up conch is like giving up water. Real hard man, real hard.
