Akeelah and the Bee (Movie)
I will be at this movie the weekend it premieres. :D
A precocious eleven-year-old girl, Akeelah Anderson, from south Los Angeles, is discovered to have a talent for words. In spite of the objections of her mother Wanda, Akeelah enters a spelling contest. Her gift takes her to compete in the National Spelling Bee, the most famous competition of its kind in the world. On the way, she is helped by a forthright, mysterious teacher, Dr. Larabee, and other members of her community. Opens 4.28.06 http://www.akeelahandthebee.com/ Stars Angela Bassett, Laurence Fishburne, and KeKe Palmer |
I will be seeing this as well. I used to dream of being in the national spelling bee. But, after I crashed and burned in the sixth grade, that dream is a distant memory....
I am happy to see Larry.... er, Laurence Fishburne back on the big screen! :D I had a small "Boyz in the 'Hood" flashback when I saw Angela & Larry would be starring in another "inner city youth" film. I love both of them!! |
I will definitely see this movie. I remember being in spelling bees from 3rd-7th grade but never making it as far as the National Spelling Bee, so this brings back fond memories.
I also had a Boyz moment when I saw that Angela and Larry would be in the movie. |
Will be there. I'm sure that our cousins will not be at THIS one on opening weekend!!

I just talked to my mom and she knows I am going to see this and get the DVD. Sorors, I think this would be a great field trip for any of you involved with Delta Academy to take your DA girls to see. :) |

Is this the same little girl that was in Madea's Family Reunion?

I've convinced a colleague to spearhead a field trip to see the film. These kids need all the motivation they can get, hopefully this movie will do that. Also, kids need to realize it's comfortable to think and do outside of the box.

~4th grade spelling bee champ in 1985 :D |
I was 5th grade champ in 19(cough, cough, sniff...sniff) :p
|
I was not a champ, :( but a finalist in 7th grade.
As a birthday outing, I will accompany little Ms. BlueReign and her friends to this movie next week. I would love to arrange a field trip but we can't go see anything that is not rated G in this county. |
THis movie is getting great press and great reviews.. I hope it does well at the Box Office

You all are ultra conservative. A few teachers took students on a field trip to see Drumline, so I thought why not Akeelah? |
This would be a great field trip movie! I'm going to recommend it to my sister, she's an AP at an elem. school.
|
I want to see this. This actress also played in Barbershop 2.
|
My students mentioned the movie in class today and I understand the actors and actresses will be on Oprah tomorrow! Was once in a spelling bee but didn't make it to the finals:(
|
I'll be in the theater with my popcawn and gummi bears!
:) |
Can't wait to see it...
This looks like a good wholesome movie!;)

I'm going to see it with my son tomorrow!!!
1984 All-County Spelling Bee Champ!!! Won my school a set of reference books for the library and I got the same set plus a French/Italian/Spanish dictonary. Lucy Webb Elementary still has those books in their library. :D |
While getting my white choco mocha, I noticed that if you bring in your stub from the movie Fri-Sun you can get a tall drink of your choice for FREE  :D
|
I just read Keke Palmer's bio. Impressive young lady who turns 13 this year. We first saw her in Barbershop 2 -- she played Gina's niece (Queen Latifah) that sparked the verbal battle between Eddie (Cedric the Entertainer) and Gina.
|
I can't wait to take my son to see this. My BF wants to take me because this is my claim to fame. LA Unified Spelling Bee Champ Grades 6,7,8. Represented Southern Cal after winning 1st against Orange, San Diego, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties grades 6,7. By 8th grade I was too wrapped up in ballet to be going to State Championships, etc. My parents just couldn't find the time to take off and fly all over the state, and go to dance recitals, etc.
Fun (yet stressful) times. For some reason, I can't stand Scrabble, though. |
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. It's a must see. I was on the edge of my seat at the end of the movie.
|
OUTSTANDING!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just truly an outstanding movie. I cried and I laughed. Very heartwarming. Definitely a must see movie. Good job, cast and production!! |
*crash*
I haven't seen this yet but would love to. This movie and Spellbound, the real-life documentary, really bring back memories—I represented Alabama in the National Spelling Bee in 1980. :D The pressure is every bit as intense as you'd imagine ... |

And no I have never taken or studied for the GRE. ETA: Oh and I failed to mention I was in spelling bees from 2nd - 8th grade. I won in 4th grade and took 2nd in the 8th grade. |
I'm ready to go see this movie again!
And I absolutely loved Javier - he was just too doggone cute! |

Yeah when he stalled was very funny. Didn't he say can you use it in a song? LMAO. I couldn't help myself though when Angela and Larry were on screen together saying, 'eat the cake Anna Mae'. And wasn't Akeelah's brother the guy that use to play Jett Jackson? Where has he been?
|
Quote:
Devon (Air Force brother) was Jett Jackson. According to IMDB profile, he has kept busy. I did the same thing with Ike and Anna Mae references.:o |

Saw the movie yesterday - theater was packed! Babies managed not to cry and nary a cell phone rang (has to be a first!) Took my eleven year old cousins with me who teased me for crying at the end!! Loved the movie - absolutely LOVED it!:D |
