Kappa Sigma at Georgia Southern

Hey how is Kappa Sig at GA Southern? I heard they weren't that great. Any one have any imput? I'm looking to rush when I get there next year.

Kevin 02-07-2006 12:03 AM

If you aren't greek, how in the heck are you fratty?

Explain.

shinerbock 02-07-2006 02:05 AM

Its true, you can be fratty without being greek.
Por ejemplo, Doc Holliday, perhaps the frattiest man of all time=not in a fraternity.

FrattyChi 02-07-2006 08:51 PM

Well my little brother was posting that one. Any input?

You suck. --- Oh, wait that was my little sister typing that.

You've got to be kidding...

FrattyChi 02-08-2006 01:53 PM

So I have a little brother who wanted to post on here. Is that such a problem?
Am I going to get an answer?

Let your little brother create a NEW user name and post himself.

I don't think you will get an answer anyway, people on here don't like to answer "what is so and so group like at so and so school" questions.

KSUViolet06 02-08-2006 01:58 PM

Hi FrattyChi:

The best advice I can give is that he should wait til he gets there. Then he can really meet the guys and form his own opinion. It's best to form one's own opinion of a chapter, instead of asking a message board full of people who don't go to GA Southern and wouldn't be much help.
:)

valkyrie 02-08-2006 02:11 PM

You should rush KA or SAE.

Dianne 02-08-2006 02:18 PM

I'm with JocelynC on this one. Besides, what if we all told you how great they were and then you got there and hated them? Go through recruitment and find out for yourself if they're good (for you) or if you fit in better with another org.

Besides, being a "good" org doesn't mean it's filled up with quality people. I've seen really strong chapters full of real a$$holes.

Kevin 02-08-2006 02:41 PM

I partied with a bunch of Sigma Nus from GA. Southern a few years ago at our Toronto convention. They were cool as hell.

"Frattychi" -- unless things have changed significantly, you'll get your ass kicked if you use the word "fratty" or at least I hope you would.

But please, don't expect to be taken seriously with a name like that. Don't know a damned thing about you. Can't really judge a person too much on a couple of bad posts and a stupid internet name. Good luck during Rush. My advice would be to keep an open mind. It's a little too early to be worried about which house you'll pledge before have a bid from a single one.

Exactly; for what it's worth, I met a few of their guys a couple of years back, and they seemed cool.

Honestly though, the best way to find out is to meet the guys himself.

Dianne 02-08-2006 02:56 PM

Excellent point, ktsnake. DO NOT use the word frat, fratty, frat guy, frat party, etc. All of the greek men I have know hate that word because of the negative connotations associated with it - in other words, all the bad greek stereotypes. Say fraternity. Or, as it was put to me in my freshman year of college by one of my fraternity friends, "Don't call my fraternity a frat. Do I call this country a ..." Well, you get it.

valkyrie 02-08-2006 03:10 PM

I've heard that they wear trucker hats. But still, of course you should judge for yourself. I mean, it would be unfraternallenic of you to make any judgments whatsoever, either now or after you're on campus. Every guy on the Georgia Southern campus is peachy, and you should love all fraternities equally. Expressing a preference of one fraternity over another smacks of elitism and is inappropriate in all instances. To be a well-rounded young fellow who exemplifies all that is good in life, you must be friends with every person on campus because singling out certain people upon whom you bestow your friendship is just not what Greek life is all about, you know. Take it upon yourself to learn of the struggles of those who have gone before you and, tragically, used the word "fratty" to refer to anything. This is never okay, and you must refrain from using words such as this that might offend the delicate sensibilities of those who wish to uphold the high ideals of our founders in daily life.

I became addicted to Greek Chat in college after stumbling upon the site one day while I was bored. I found it to be a fun place to chitchat, see what greek life was like at other schools, etc. Now that I have been out of college for a few years, I don't visit the site as much as I used to - simply not that much free time any more. I sometimes go months without checking the boards. And I have to say that this has degenerated into almost a completely negative place. I cannot read a single thread anymore that does not have rude sarcasm, inappropriate comments, and just plain meanness. Even when people have something of substance to contribute or when they are trying to offer real advice, their posts are met with snide remarks. If I was not a greek visiting this site, it would give me a horrible impression of greeks as a whole. All this hem-hawing high school name calling crap. I appreciate wit as much as the next guy, but no one can contribute anything of substance on this site without being met with ill-founded, mean-spirited criticism. The great thing about Greek Chat is that it should be a place where greeks can share their common experience and be proud of being greek. We should be able to find here the same spirit that made us join our orgs to begin with. That's a hard thing to find around here now, and that's very sad. Shame on you.

I'd form a "horrible impression of greeks" if I thought they were all uptight and lacking a sense of humor, but hey, it takes all kinds.

kapsigcub 02-08-2006 03:43 PM

KS at GSU is VERY exclusive. It's so exclusive, they didn't even bid Jesus.

Have a nice day.

Dianne 02-08-2006 03:51 PM

Valkyrie, if you knew me, you'd know me to be the most easy-going, humor-loving person. And if you'd read any of my other responses on this site, you'd know that. But you have to agree that there's a lot more negativity on this site than there used to be (I see you're a senior member, been on since 2001). I see that as a problem and decided to call you out on it. But clearly there is no pleasing some people on this site, perhaps myself included, so I won't comment any more on the matter, except to say that I find you insufferable and I'm glad you don't wear my letters.

Awesome! Someone like you calling me insufferable is quite a compliment.

It amazes me that people took this thread so seriously.

OMG!!! TEH VALKYRIE IS INSUFFERABLE!!!

I love it when people stay away for long periods of time and come out of the woodworks just to call other GCers 'insufferable'. AWESOME.

That's funny because I also joined GC in 2001. The climate was the same then as it is now. In fact, GC has gotten a little BETTER since 2001.

But you were mean as well. Contributing to the problem, if there is one, doesn't help fix it.

SigmaChiGuy 02-08-2006 11:09 PM

Your letters? The ZTA's at my school are better known as the T & A house, because they can't keep their Z from getting ripped off. Or, was it for another reason? :o <--

Dianne - know your role.

So, you wanna start something with the ZTAs? Or do you just have some unresolved issues?

Don't insult us all just because we have one member that wants to use our letters as she pleases.

GC was the first time I ever heard of anyone being offended for being referred to as a "frat boy." Or that it was not cool to say we were going to a "frat party."

But, whatever.

ditto

Yes, lame as it is, we get it. Don't want to say "frat"? Fine, don't say it. Think it sounds disrespectful or carries negative connotations? Say so and don't use it. But since "frat" is not an obscenity, leave this stupid, stupid comparison out of it.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who's had that thought. And really, those who associate "frat" as a negative, probably also think of Greeks as a whole as a negative.

the non-obscene options are "would you call your mother a moth?" or "would you call a sorority a sore?"

The c-word one just seems to make the biggest impression that you shouldn't do this.

Non-obscene, but still stupid because unlike "frat," "moth" and "sore" are actual words with meanings one wouldn't want to associate with mothers and sororities.

No, I wouldn't call my mother a "moth," but I would call her a "mom." Disrespectful?

I guess it's also disrespectful to say "CalTech" instead of "California Institute of Technology," or, say, "Pitt" instead of "University of Pittsburgh"? ("Pitt" is especially bad -- are we saying that it's "the pits"?)

We shorten words and names in English all the time. Far from being considered disrespectful, it's often considered a way of showing endearment or, at least, comfortable familiarity. The only reason some people (very few, if any, of whom I have "met" anywhere other than GC, I would note) have a problem with "frat" is because of the connotations summoned up for some in the general population by terms like "frat party" and "frat house." It's PC masquarading as PR, pure and simple.

No, we are not saying it's the pits. We're saying it's Pitt. It's nothing bad, although some dingdongs at the University disagreed.

frat is vulgar, IMO.
