rude girls
So I was in a communications class the other day, and the professor was talking about people fitting in at college, and two girls in my class started talking about how sorority girls are just b*tches, and that they just join sororities to have friends, and that they are paying for their friends which is pathetic. I was so steamed after I heard these comments, but unfortunately the conversation ended because class was over. Should I confront these girls next class? Because I am really hurt that they are stereotyping every sorority girl together just because they might have met a few rotten girls. What should I do?

Ignore them
or Follow them home and slash their tires. |
Sadly there's nothing you could probably say to these girls that could make them change their minds.
My advice is to keep maintaining a positive image for sororities and greek life throughout all of your endeavors. Wearing your letters to class, while contributing to insightful discussions, can help others begin to put sorority girls in a positive light. I love it when people say "I would have never thought you were in a sorority!" And then proceed to ask me questions. Sometimes, girls even decide to either COB or try formal recruitment. There is a large problem with prejudice of the greek system in general. Notions of "buying your friends" are prevalent, and others see sorority sisters and fraternity brothers and alcoholic partiers. So that was a longer-winded answer to your question. One thing to consider is approaching the girls after class, explaining that their comments (especially the b*tches comment) were very hurtful to you. Explain that you understand that they did not mean to generalize, but that they may not have realized how offensive their comments really were. And if that doesn't work, there's always slashing their tires :). |
thanks a lot....all of that advice has made me feel ten times better. And I agree with you; I have had friends that thought frats and sororities were just for rich kids and partiers, but then they met really nice and down to earth people and they regretted saying those things. I feel like its all in the person on how they act, not the group they are associated with necessarily. i will definitely be wearing my letters proudly tomorrow in that class!

What you can do to piss these girls off is be absoultely hot, and feed them as much doughnuts as you can so they can get fat and smelly. That is the ultimate victory for sorority girls. Being prettier than GDIs. |
Ignore the comments and lead by example. Encourage your sisters to do the same. You can't change people's perceptions of Greeks overnight and you're certainly not going to do it by getting into an arguement with these girls.
If you really want to fight City Hall, organize a Scholarship Supper at the house where you invite some of the students from your classes to come and learn about your sorority and to collectively celebrate your class's academic accomplishments. Or go and sit next to the girls for the next few classes. Invite them to study with you or to dinner at the house. |
I don't think those girls are going to go to a Scholarship Supper, but the concept of re-educating them is nice.
Have to agree with the other posters: living well is the best revenge. Be sweet, intelligent, and warm, and when they say, "I wouldn't have guessed you were in a sorority!" take the opportunity to tell them the great things about membership. Although I support tire-slashing, also. |
Take your forearm and slam it against their foreheads and make their forefathers feel the pain!

Is that the kind Wayne has in a special dispenser inside his car? I can't tell, but it looks like it's wound up in the package.
Also, in the "About" section, note the candy has a "desireable appearance." |

You're better. You're one of the select. They're a bunch of Independent Types.

So, tell me Sigmund, why is it that every time I see the title of this thread it looks like "nude girls?"

Enough with the reference to tiers or classes or people being better than somebody else. Being in a sorority is not about being "one of the select". Being a Kappa makes no better than anyone else, greek or not. Did you not learn that lesson at home when you were a small child??? Plenty of awesome girls don't go through recruitment. Not everyone is a joiner. This board is about being (or attempting to be) in a greek letter organization. How about being supportive without the snide remarks. We see plenty of great girls here on GC who don't gets bids. Nothing wrong with them either. Soap box retracted. Denise |

As far as the rude girls go, they have their opinions which you cannot change by arguing with them. Just be polite and respectful. |

I do like the use of "old goat", though.
Rudey, my dad was trying to talk me into buying a Delorean. |
If girls make rude comments about Greeks, I ignore them. Seriously. If you know you aren't an "elitist snob who buys her friends", then what people say doesn't matter.
|
JocelynC is right. My best friend from high school told me that she thought sororities were cults. I told her that she shouldn't join one then. I also told her not to make any more comments like that in my presence or I would be forced to expound on my opinion of ignorant independents (and for those of you on this board who tend to be a little touchy, I am not suggesting that all independents are ignorant, but I am saying that *some* independents are ignorant about what greek life is really about). My friend is a quality girl. Greek life was not for her. And we are lucky enough to have a friendship where we can speak honestly, but I have never tried to change her opinion. Even if you tried to change the opinions of those girls in your class, there's probably another 500 girls at your school who feel the same way. So rise above. I know it's frustrating. But in the end, I always felt sorry for them - they never get to experience all the awesome things I experienced in college by going greek. Too bad for them.

And hey people, I have a question. If being a GLO member is the same as being a GDI, then why are you throwing your money away? Kddani, please don't harass alum. Thank you. -Rudey |

EBAY (yes, there is a song in my head that goes with this) Let me stand up for kddani. No one is harassing anyone. When people make elitist and snobby comments, we call them on the carpet. History has shown that we get no response tho. No defense, no clarity. |
Kill them with kindness.
If they speak out in class again about how horrible sororities and sorority girls are, kindly and rationally offer your opinion and tell them and the class what your experiences have been like. You don't have to try and change their minds, but don't let them speak for the rest of the class. |
