Lifetime TV's CHEERLEADER NATION

Lifetime 'Brings it On'

Since we've got a bunch of cheerleading enthusiasts in the house..

They feature Dunbar HS...again. If Dunbar HS sounds familiar, it's because the Lexington, KY squad was featured on MTV's TRUE LIFE: I'm a Cheerleader a few years ago.

Does anyone know what ever happened to the girls from the first go around? I know that one annoying brunette went through Rush at WKU, but no one liked her and she didn't get a bid.

Cheerleader Nation premieres on Lifetime on March 12th.

Xylochick216 02-03-2006 06:03 PM

I thought the brunette girl became an AOII in Kentucky.

That's right.

Though I'm surprised she got a bid anywhere at WKU especially after the debacle she caused at the AGD house.

Yay for showing Lextown, KY!

I'm not sure where all the other girls went from the last time - but I know a lot of people that went to Dunbar that said some of those girls thought they were the sh** b/c they were on tv. And that most of them got a big surprise when they went to college and um, no one cared!

I'll have to ask my friend who went to Dunbar about some of them...and see if I can get feedback!

Unregistered- 02-03-2006 10:28 PM

Just from reading the first thread about Dunbar -- it's so weird how the two girls both went AOPi. Doing the math, they must have both graduated by now or are 5th year seniors.

If I was currently on the squad, I'd stay far far away from cameras, especially after seeing how the first round of girls was portrayed. They're doomed. DOOMED!

I don't think it's weird at all. Didn't she command her friends to cut the sororities that cut her?

:p

Yes, but Amanda went to WKU. The tattle tale girl went to UF. Two different campuses, same HS squad, same AOPi.

Rollergirl2001 02-04-2006 02:35 AM

I will be watching this! There are three things that are big in the south: 1) Sorority Life, 2) Cheerleading, and 3) Football.

cutiepatootie 02-05-2006 05:30 AM

Heck i am just glad to have lifetime back after the fued between them and dish network

Rollergirl2001 03-18-2006 04:41 PM

I'm surprised that no one has talked about the show.

Anyway, I feel torn for Taylor. I though that she was going to do the back handspring or tuck, but she didn't do it.

I'm confused with the class level. Is it possible for a incoming freshman to make the varsity squad?

Otherwise, good show.

KillarneyRose 03-18-2006 08:23 PM

I TIVO'd this show and finally got around to watching the first episode. I'm hooked!

I liked all of the girls, with the possibly exception of Chelsea (she of the motorcycle mama and the flat iron abuse). One of the posters on Television Without Pity noted that Chelsea will probably be dancing on a pole in a few years. Clever!

I thought Ryan was the cutest little thing. I thought Donna, the coach (and Ryan's mom) would be a real bitch but I found her surprisingly likable.

I really loved that there were no twiggy stick girls on the squad. They all looked normal and healthy and not like they'd shirk away in horror from a plate of food. "Oh no, I couldn't possibly eat; I had a stalk of celery just last night!"

KDAngel 03-18-2006 08:44 PM

Dunbar was one of my rival high school's. I lived in Lexington and cheering there was the most fun of anywhere else I've ever lived (I'm a military brat) b/c the sport is just so strong in that town.

So thanks for the thread, I had no idea there was a new show about Dunbar out. :)

I don't know how it is in the Big Bad South, but up here it's perfectly normal for a freshman to make varsity if she is that good. It's the same with any sport.

carnation 03-19-2006 11:58 AM

Some schools here require that a freshman spend at least a year on JV. I like that--it keeps seniors from being dumped off a sport they've been faithful to for years, gives freshmen something to look forward to, and prevents burnout.

Some of the JV competition squads in this area are far better than some of the varsity squads.

ASUADPi 03-19-2006 12:56 PM

I missed it last sunday. I will be watching it tonight.

I'm such a dork. LOL.

I just finished coaching and now I'm subjecting myself to more cheerleaders. :D

When I was in high school, Freshman could only make Freshman. At first JV was for Sophomores (am I even spelling this word right?) and Juniors, Varsity for Juniors and Seniors. They changed it my Sophmore year so that Sophomores could be on Varsity (their only reason for changing it though, which pissed a lot of girls off, was for state and that some of the best tumblers in the school were sophomores and they wanted them on Varsity (Co-ed) so that the we could continue winning (defending) our #1 title).

My cheerleaders, when they go to high school next year, have been told that as freshman, they can only make the freshman squad. After that they are open to either JV or Varsity.

KSUViolet06 03-19-2006 05:57 PM

Dunbar divides Varsity and JV by SKILLS and not grade level. Which is why the coach required a standing back tuck as a minimum for Varsity.

KatieKate1244 03-19-2006 06:06 PM

When does the show come on? I wanted to watch it last week, but I was on Spring Break, and I don't have cable at home.

See that is the logic I like. I thought it was lame in high school that JV was for certain grades and Varsity was for certain grades. It should be purely based on skill. Just because you are a senior doesn't mean that somehow you are better than a junior. Does that make sense?

Both high schools I went to were like that. And really it makes the most sense to me. I make sound like a jerk, but if you're a senior and get booted from the team because other younger girls can do it better, than so be. Sports are fun, but try-outs exist for a reason to me.

I watched the 1st episode for the first time tonight and about to watch the 2nd. I'm totally addicted.

And I feel for Taylor. I was a competitve springboard/platform diver in highschool and college and I used to pysch myself out like no other about some of the stupidest things. It really sucked bad. I hope she gets over it soon though.

Ooo, and I so love Katie. Good for her making the team. That's awesome. She kinda looks like Kristen from Laguna Beach to me too...

honeychile 03-20-2006 01:02 AM

Okay, I'm totally and completely shocked!! My high school has the Freshman Squad, JV (sophmore thru senior by skills), and Varsity (also by skills, but NEVER with a freshman!).

I only saw a bit of the show, so I don't have much of an opinion yet.

KSUViolet06 03-20-2006 02:13 AM

The former soccer player ( I think her name is Megan) is impressive. The things she's doing have taken most girls YEARS to build up to. She must catch on fast.

The bag Ryan got for birthday was (I'm pretty sure) the Kate Spade bookbag purse.

For some reason, Chelsea bothers me, I'm not sure why.

This show really brings back alot of memories of the DRAMA of HS.

SoCalGirl 03-20-2006 03:07 AM

At the HS by brother attended Seniors could not be on JV but Freshman could make Varsity. At my HS a Junior could not be on JV but Freshman could make Varsity.

I think it makes sense to divide by skill but if a Senior can't hack it on Varsity maybe they shouldn't be on either team? Why should a Senior be given a spot on JV when that spot can be given to a younger girl. One that you can develop talent with and can go on to Varsity the following years?

Katie, the soccer girl, is great.

Chelsea is a brat. My mom would have slapped me if I had treated her like that.

What kind of car is it that Ryan got? I think it's a Grand Vitara but I'm not sure. Something tells me a Grandpa in Kentucky wouldn't buy his grandkid a Suzuki.

Yea, I do not know many people period in KY that buy Suzuki's.

Chelsea has a serious attitude problem. My parents would have slapped me black and blue if I had acted like her. However, a lot of teenagers are acting that way nowadays. My little sister (she's 14) and her entire class at school are horrible to be around because of the attitudes. Why are parents letting them get away with it?

As far as my high school squad went, we only had varsity. Sometimes there were tryouts, sometimes there weren't. We never had much interest for cheerleading, though. I can only remember one JV squad, and that was when my older sister was a sophmore and cheered on it.

epchick 03-20-2006 12:14 PM

Ugh don't even get me started on Chelsea!! lol.

For my freshman & sophomore years of HS, we had both JV and Varsity. But for my junior & senior years we only had Varsity---cheerleading wasn't a big thing at my high school. If you were a cheerleader, you got booed at EVERY event!

But seniors were not allowed to be on JV. I only remember 1 senior my freshman year who insisted on being on JV because she didn't want the "pressure" of being in Varsity. And now that my school has switched to only Varsity, now they allow freshman to join. Which is ok I guess, since the cheerleaders have always sucked! lol

irishpipes 03-20-2006 12:34 PM

My school only had one cheerleading squad, so I guess it was "varsity." However, you couldn't do cheer or pom as a freshman, because tryouts were in the Spring for the following year's squad. Although it was cool to be a cheerleader, I don't remember our cheerleaders ever doing anything. I am sure there wasn't one who could do any tumbling.

ASUADPi 03-20-2006 12:47 PM

Okay so I just finished watching my tape of the episode...

As a coach I completely understand the frustration the coaches are feeling. I had two cheerleaders have to quit the team as a result of injury only like 2 weeks before state (which was actually only 8 practices for us at 1.5 hours, 4 days a week). So I totally feel them.

I actually felt bad for Chelsea. Yes, she shouldn't be treating her mother that way, but I totally feel for her when it comes to Nicole. Nicole is completely blind about her friendship. Nicole is all about her boyfriend (who doesn't like Chelsea). While Chelsea, you could tell, doesn't have a boyfriend so she isn't a member of "the boyfriend club". Nicole is completely ignoring this girl that is supposed to be her best friend for her boyfriend. Does it sound like I've had this happen to me? It's because it has, so I completely understand why Chelsea is being such a bitch, I guess. Her friend is blowing her off for a guy. And Nicole is too stupid to realize that the way she is treating Chelsea is part of the problem.

I thought Kaitlin's mom was a total stage mom. She is definately living vicariously through her child.

I actually really like Ryan's mom. I thought with her own daughter on the team that she would be, I don't know, all about Ryan, but it doesn't seem like she is.

Okay, was anyone else doing this...as I was watching the show I was literally "taking metal notes" of who I thought would end up going Greek in college. LOL.

irishpipes 03-20-2006 12:54 PM

I think Ryan is lucky that she is such a good cheerleader so she doesn't have to endure any "you're only on the team because your mom is the coach" crap. She seems like a sweet girl and is a great cheerleader.

I agree that Nicole is treating Chelsea badly, but I don't think it is any excuse for Chelsea to treat her mother the way she did.

After watching this I am so glad I only have boys.

I also think Katie is a cutie and I can't believe she hasn't cheered before. I was happy to see that the girls weren't all stick figures, but on the other hand, a couple of them actually seemed a little too heavy to tumble. They made me a little nervous.

Rollergirl2001 03-20-2006 07:45 PM

Well in my high school, there are three levels: freshmen, junior varsity and varsity. Freshmen can only be on the freshmen squad. Sophomores, juniors and seniors can be on either JV or varsity. However, seniors can't be on JV.

I'm glad that they don't have stick figure cheerleaders (i.e. Ashley).

BTW, if they do another season, I think they should do a co-ed squad.

I hope that this show proves that cheerleading is tough and not by popularity alone. Gymnastics ability is essential for everyone wanting to tryout, especially in the southern schools, who are the majority of the competitors for national championship.

ASUADPi 03-20-2006 08:43 PM

Cheer is really big business in some of the southern states. I remember watching the commentary or features (something) for Bring It On. The writers said they got the idea from watching the National competitions and doing research. In some (I'm not saying all) of these southern schools the CHEERLEADERS are the BEST sports team the school has! Which is probably true. If you're taking a team to the nationals that team has a reputation of being one of the best and they have worked their asses off to get there.

More and more colleges now are offering Cheer scholarships because people are starting to realize that cheerleading is a sport and that those women (and men) work their butts off.

Elsa-town77 03-22-2006 08:37 PM

I'm glad it's being taken more seriously even though I myself never cheered. I just know a lot of friends who did and it's definitely a sport. This show is all I hear about so hopefully it will bring some well-deserved attention to the sport!

AchtungBaby80 03-27-2006 01:09 AM

I TiVo'd this show and watched it for the first time tonight...and yeah, I think I'm hooked now. I guess it's because growing up in our house cheerleading was what you did, so it's all familiar to me. Thank goodness I got out of it really early on, though--I feel sorry for those poor girls on the show!

It's cool watching my town on TV, though.

SoCalGirl 03-27-2006 03:59 AM

Is it common for squads to cheer in the track suits that they were wearing during the football game? They wore those to school too. My high school's squad never did that. Even if was 30 degrees out they were in the pleated skirts. They'd wear the turtlenecks when it was cold. And their letter jackets when they weren't actually cheering.

They did at my high school. When it was 10 degrees out, they were glad for those!

They did at mine as well. Towards the end of the season especially, when it gets cold AND rainy. Though sometimes they wore their track pants under the skirt, which I thought just looked plain stupid.

No sense being cold and miserable and risk getting sick just to show some leg.

TheEpitome1920 03-27-2006 12:50 PM

Caught it for the first time last night.. Talk about PRESSURE. Poor Ayrica. :(

KSUViolet06 03-27-2006 01:36 PM

I really admire Amanda's confidence. She is exceptional, esprcially being the only freshman on Varsity.

Ayrica= FABULOUS.

I know Katie's full is not entirely solid, but again, the fact that she is picking up on it in one season is great.

Chelsea and Kaitlyn both have caught the dreaded SENIORITIS. And I also think that growing apart from Nicole is afffecting Chelsea's perfomance as well.

Fun fact: Both Saleem from Dunbar and the coach they showed from Tate's Creek Jomo Thompson are former University of Kentucky cheerleaders, the winningest squad in college cheer history. They both had brief stints as Kentucky assistant coaches and choreographers. (my mom is a coach in our area and a former Florida State cheerleader so it's amazing the stuff I learn)

The regional that Dunbar competes in is the most difficult of all the regions UCA has. There is SO much talent in the KY area. I can name at LEAST 10 squads in that regional that gave Dunbar a definte run for their money.

Greenup County High is one of the schools in Kentucky that really challenge Dunbar.

BTW, Tennessee, Louisana, Alabama, Florida, Texas, and Kentucky are the southern states that are big on cheerleading.
