San Bernardino County sheriff's deputy shoots airman
This is really f*cked up. If you listen to the video the cop tells the guy to stand up, then shoots him when he does. After he shoots the guy the tells the guy to "shut the f*ck up" several times, like getting shot doesn't hurt or anything.

Wow. Damn.
|
I saw this on the Today show yesterday morning and was really disturbed. You could hear the airman say "I'm on your side, I'm military" and the cop just kept yelling "get up, get the **** up". The airman clearly said "I'm getting up now" and was being totally cooperative. They're going to have a hard time getting out of this one...

Another day in the life of Southern California...
I'm tellin' yah, these fools are trigga happay... Yeah. It was FOUL to shoot an Airman. And good that the FBI is investigating. And then the chit was caught on tape. Fools, I'm tellin' yah. Bringin' back the days of the 92 riots... |
I was agast. Its rare that I am starled by anything.

**** I don't know if this is true or not *****
I heard from a co-worker that the cop who shot the guy was confused at the time of the incident. The police officer MEANT to tell the airman to "shut up" but instead accidently told him to "stand up". When the guy stood up he shot him because he didn't know why the guy stood up.( well, he did tell him to stand up, not shut up). I wonder if this excuse is gonna fly? |
|
ok, that link just makes things more confusing.

Uniformed Police in this country hide behind their badge way too much.

I wish the audio on the tape was a little better, though, to know the rest of the conversation. (ETA that some say there was a third voice who may have yelled "Get up," instead of the officer. That could make a difference) In the end, though, "confusion" is no excuse for a law officer shooting someone. Especially when he was not only the one who was confused, but also causing the confusion. |
any responce from the AirForce? I bet his unit is pissed.

Deputy Faces Charges in Airman's Shooting Associated Press | March 07, 2006 SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - A sheriff's deputy who was videotaped shooting an unarmed Iraq War veteran after a car chase will be charged with attempted voluntary manslaughter, authorities said Tuesday. The decision to charge Deputy Ivory J. Webb, 45, was announced by San Bernardino County District Attorney Michael A. Ramos. Sheriff Gary Penrod said Webb will remain on paid administrative leave during the investigation into the shooting of Air Force Senior Airman Elio Carrion, 21. "I respect the decision of the district attorney's office," Penrod said. It is the first time the county's prosecutors have filed charges against a lawman for an on-duty shooting. Webb's arraignment was set for Wednesday. If convicted, he could face up to 18 1/2 years in prison. The charge includes the special allegations of infliction of great bodily injury and use of a firearm, Ramos said at a news conference. In California, such enhancements can result in extra prison time. Carrion, an Air Force security officer just back from Iraq, was a passenger in a Corvette that police chased at high speed on the night of Jan. 29 until the Corvette crashed into a wall in Chino, about 45 miles east of Los Angeles. A grainy videotape shot by a bystander showed Carrion on the ground next to the car with Webb standing and pointing at gun at him. A voice appears to order Carrion to rise, but when the airman appears to begin complying, the deputy shoots him three times. Carrion was shot in the chest, shoulder and thigh and was hospitalized for several days. Authorities found no weapons on Carrion or the driver, Luis Escobedo. Prosecutors announced they were charging Escobedo with a felony of attempting to evade a peace officer while driving recklessly and misdemeanor driving under the influence. He was expected to surrender Wednesday. The maximum penalty if convicted would be 3 1/2 years in prison. The FBI is investigating possible civil rights violations. The sheriff's department conducted its own probe and gave the results to the district attorney's office. At the time, the sheriff said the videotape "arouses a lot of suspicion," but he pointed out that it is fuzzy and contains gaps. "In any type of investigation it is the responsibility of the Sheriff's Department to put together all the facts," Penrod said Tuesday. "The district attorney's role is to take those facts and determine whether there is sufficient evidence to issue a criminal complaint. Obviously that was their choice in this investigation." Ramos assigned two top attorneys to review the shooting and requested an FBI enhancement of the videotape. Sound Off...What do you think? Join the discussion. Copyright 2006 Associated Press . The DAs is always caslled into situations like this and rightly so to get it out of the Departments Hands.
I have watched this Clip many times and just shake My head in wonderment.:o Officers carry weapons, they are trained to use those weapons only as a last resort. That is why so many different types of weapons are available to Officers=Tasers, Batons, Pepper Spray, ECT. This Officer screwed up period. He may have had family problems or whatever, but they are supposed to be left behind when one straps on a weapon, has a Badge, and in a Police Car. Granted, it is not easy, but He should be prosecuted to the fullest. I realized one day that I had the "POWER OF GOD" on My Hip=Life and Death and that is a terrific responeability or at least to Me. He is going to pay for this and it is a shame. But, He should pay. He could have killed this person. |
One of the worst thing about this situation is that when I first heard about it I figured the guy the cop shot was black.
