Oscars: March 5, 2006

...nominees include:

George Clooney, Reese Witherspoon, Jake Gyllenhal, Joaquin Phoenix, Felicty Huffman.......

Walk the Line did NOT get a best pic nod...

For more: Oscar Nominees

PhiMuAmberkins 01-31-2006 11:25 AM

I'm really surprised Walk the Line didn't get a best picture nomination.
Brokeback Mountain got 8 noms though...great movie from what I hear, although, seeing as how I live in the Bible belt/middle of nowhere Arkansas, I haven't seen it yet.

March 5th is my 21st birthday. I guess I'm gonna have to tape it...

squirrely girl 01-31-2006 02:52 PM

i was happy to see that crash was not forgotten and that terrence howard got a nod for best actor in hustle and flow.

Same here, I was sure Crash would be forgotten since it came out so long ago, but I was pleased to see it wasn't...I thought it was a fantastic movie. And I loved Walk the Line (though it drag on a bit), but I don't think it really was "Best Picture" worthy, I'm not terribly surprised it didn't get nominated for that.

Was Resse that great in it? I didn't see it yet, but I read she's a fave (along with Felicity Huffman) for it. I was surprised at Keira Knightly - though I didn't see that movie either, I've never found her that great.

Of course, I also saw an "expert" saying that Joaquin Phoenix would win for best actor. I hope he doesn't. I love Phillip Seymor Hoffan and I really hope he wins...

AND, the "Hard Life if Your a Pimp" song was nominated for best original song!!

BetteDavisEyes 01-31-2006 04:25 PM

I was disappointed that A History of Violence didn't get a nomination and that Viggo Mortenson wasn't nominated either.
I was happy to see Terrence Howard recognized though I don't think he'll win.

My predictions as to who will win though not who I would like to see win:

Best Supporting Actress: Rachel Weisz

Best Supporting Actor: Paul Giamatti

Best Actress: Felicity Huffman

Best Actor: Phillip Seymour Hoffman

Best Picture: Brokeback Mountain

Best Director: Ang Lee

Knightly was getting a lot of buzz before the film was even released; I'd even heard talk that she's a favorite.

It would be great if Hoffman won for best actor; he was great in "Capote," and it would be nice to see such a good actor recognized.

I was too. I wasn't aware that Munich did that well at the box office that it could qualify for a Oscar nod.

I didn't think that box office revenue was a qualification for Oscar nominations.

To throw a little political angle at the pinko commie lefty American-hating gay-loving Hollywood crowd of Democrats who are crying that 2005 ticket sales were down 10%:

The people bought 2005 tickets to:

1 - Star Wars III (will reach $1 bil) - one nomination for "make-up"
2 - Harry Potter (best of the series) - one nom. for "art director)
3 - Nardia - (another $1 bil) - three tech nominations

Hollywood doesn't make enough pictures people like, and don't give honors to the ones they do.

The Best Pix nominees have the lowest gross sales amount of all prev. Best Pix nominees.

Ticket Sales will improve when we get more pictures we like, and less crap like most of the nominees.

(Thanks for Michael Medved for part of this info)

Quote of the year. It's going in the siggy.

Peaches-n-Cream 01-31-2006 10:38 PM

I am so happy for George Clooney. I love him. I really do.

I didn't see Hustle and Flow, but I thought Terrance Howard was excellent in Crash which is my pick for Best Motion Picture.

OH YEAH!! That made my day.:)

ASUADPi 01-31-2006 11:12 PM

I have to say that I'm a little shocked that Star Wars didn't pick up more nods. I figured that it would at least get nominated for the technical awards (since the previous 5 episodes got nods for those).

I'm just so surprised that they just got a nod for makeup. I really expected sound effects, sound effects editing, etc...

But the academy award nominations tend to shock me every year. Usually they nominate someone or something where I'm thinking "WTF?"

Was Reese even nominated?

Every year, I get a little worse at picking the nominees and winners. I think the last time I picked a sure-fire winner was American Beauty and Sam Mendes.

Taualumna 02-01-2006 12:03 AM

For the first time in years, I have not seen ANY of the best picture nominees!

Same here. My husband and I have some catching up to do over the next month.

PhiMuAmberkins 02-01-2006 12:42 AM

I haven't seen any of them either. I think I'm going to see Brokeback Mountain next week though...

I miss working at a movie theater.

I saw Brokeback and Capote; thought Hoffman was great in Capote (as was Keener), and thought Brokeback was overrated.

Taualumna 03-05-2006 02:22 AM

*bumping* cuz it's TONIGHT!

amycat412 03-05-2006 03:24 AM

my pics:

Picture: Brokeback Mountain
Director: Ang Lee
Actor: Phillip Seymour Hoffman
Actress: Reese Witherspoon
Sup Actor: George Clooney
Sup Actress: Rachel Weisz
Original Screenplay: Crash
Adapted Screenplay: Brokeback Mountain

:)

honeychile 03-05-2006 12:51 PM

Brokeback Mountain will probably sweep.

It's been interesting to hear some of the various movie people. One (I couldn't see who, just heard his voice) said that if Brokeback Mountain wasn't about two men, it wouldn't have been looked at twice. On Letterman, James Woods refused comment about Brokeback Mountain, rolling his eyes and saying, "I still want some work in this town."

So... it's safe to say that Hollywood has yet again made up their mind by what they want, not necessarily what middle America wants. I doubt that I'll bother watching.

I agree with all of these except I think Paul Giamatti will get Best Supporting Actor.

The comment about BM not being looked at twice if it was a man and a women....well duh. Of course it wouldn't, that's the whole point. There wouldn't be a story/conflict/obstacle if it wasn't two men.....

tinydancer 03-05-2006 09:38 PM

YEAH, BABY! George Clooney wins Best Supporting Actor!!

I guess I'll stick around and watch the rest of the show.

But here's the thing--the Oscars are about Hollywood celebrating itself....so it will ALWAYS be what Hollywood wants. The People's Choice are about what middle America wants. Oscars are Industry peeps celebrating themselves.

Crash could upset Brokeback for best picture largely because people in LA LOVED CRASH and most of the voters are in LA.

Peaches-n-Cream 03-05-2006 09:47 PM

I think that Crash will win.

Yeah for my love George Clooney. :)

georgewallace3 03-05-2006 10:38 PM

As great of a movie as Crash was I think Brokeback will win simply because it was about two gay guys.....regardless of the fact that the movie, from what I heard, blew ass.

Why does that make him an idiot? He's right....Hollywood is nothing but a bunch of liberal pro gay marriage wack jobs.

True about the difference between The People's Choice and The Academy Awards. I'd LOVE to see Crash in an upset!

And yeah for George Clooney! Peaches & Cream, didn't we once agree to share George in a night of undying love? ;)

uksparkle 03-05-2006 10:56 PM

I think John Stewart is funny. I just want Reese to win, but I'm pretty sure she won't just because it doesn't seem like the kind of role that's going to win tonight.

I think Brokeback will win, I just say Crash because I am in the film industry and there's been A TON of buzz here for Crash, so there is a CHANCE they could come from behind and do it.

Brokeback did not blow ass, but I will qualify that by saying I am a movie reviewer and so I saw it WAY BEFORE there was any buzz on it. I am not sure if I saw it now, having heard so much about it I would feel as I did when I did see it.

blueGBI 03-05-2006 11:30 PM

Three 6 Mafia won an Oscar.

I've done seen it all.

No it did blow ass to many - including some of the better critics.

It blew ass in the sense that it wasn't a great movie and it also literally blew ass.

Reese has the odds in her favor... so maybe... its between here and Felicity Huffman

As far as best movie goes, im pretty sure brokeback has it in the bag

well like I said, I saw PRE HYPE and hype does affect one's opinion. Heath Ledger's performance was supoerb and Ang Lee's direction beautiful.
