January 29, 1913: A Day of Thanksgiving for Members of AKA Sorority, INC

Sorors,

More than Ninety-three years ago, Soror Nellie Quander was on the case! As you know, in the fall of 1912, Soror Nellie learned of changes to take place with her beloved Alpha Kappa Alpha. At this time, she gathered, Soror Norma E. Boyd, Soror Julia E. Brooks, Soror Ethel Jones Mowbray, Soror Nellie K. Pratt and Soror Minne B. Smith to plan for legal incorporation.

After weeks of planning and preparation, on January 29, 1913, Alpha Kappa Alpha was incorporated as a perpetual body. Alpha Kappa Alpha was the first sorority organized for African American Women in the United States, but was also the first to become incorporated!

To our INCORPORATORS, we thank you AND we celebrate you! For if Soror Nellie had not have been on the case, sorors, where would we as members of ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA be today?

Good morning, Sorors.

I'm very thankful to Soror Nellie Quander and the Soror-incorporators for realizing that we had a treasure that needed to be protected. Their groundwork was key in helping build our wonderful Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. we have today.

Skee-wee my Sorors.
:) :D

Incorporators

Happy Incorporation Day!!!! Thank God for Nellie Quander being at the right place at the right time to hear of the horrible things that were trying to take place. If it weren't for her, who knows where AKA would be today.

"On January 29, 1913, under the provisions of Subchapter three of Chapter XVII of the Code of the Laws of the District of Columbia, Alpha Kappa Alpha was incorporated as a perpetual body with "power to organize, institute, and charter subordinate chapters whose particular purposes and objective would be educational," and "would promote the intellectual standard and mutual uplift of its members."

Parker, Marjorie H. "Past is Prologue: 1908-1999." (1999).

Thanks to Soror Nellie Quander, Soror Minnie B. Smith, Soror Nellie Pratt Russell, Soror Julia Evangeline Brooks, Soror Ethel Jones Mowbray, and Soror Norma Elizabeth Boyd for ensuring the longevity of ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA.

Sorors, I echo ALL of your sentiments!!! I am SO very grateful to Soror Nellie Quander, for without her, I would not have had the opportunity to share a sisterhood with so many beautiful, intelligent, caring, and talented women.

Soror 2D, thanks for posting this! Happy Incorporation Day, Sorors!

I have to tell a story that still gives me chills some nearly 25 years later. I had the opportunity and privilege of meeting Soror Norma Boyd at Washington National Airport (now Reagan). Boulé was held in Boston that year, and I met her and another Soror at the gate where I was Soror Boyd's wheelchair escort. I honestly didn't know who she was at the time, but when I found out who she was, it was hard for me to keep my composure! She actually started to tell me some of the history of what led to incorporation and before I knew it, an hour had passed. Still to this day, I get chills just thinking about it.

I told her that I was interested in Alpha Kappa Alpha, and she wished me the best and told me to let her know if I made it. Unfortunately, she died 3 years after that meeting, 5 years before I crossed.

But that's a moment that I'll never forget.

WOW! I would have been balling my eyes out. It's something about that history. I was balling when I was in the same room as my UG charter members and to hear them speak about the history of the school and how the chapter came to be. Just amazing.

Go on, Soror B!

Thanks for remembering our Incorporators on this auspicious day! Thank God for their vision and purpose!

Happy Incorporation Day, sorors!!! :)

I'm late, but I hope that all of my sorors had a good Incorporation Day.

I, experiencing my first Incorporation Day, had to pause, remember, and reflect on the tenacity of our incorporators to organize and mobilize to protect the organization that they and we hold dear. Our founders and incorporators were truly amazingly loyal and seriously visionary women.

SKEEEEEEEEEEEE-WEEEEEEEEEEEE SORORS!

firecracker08 01-31-2007 10:44 AM

I'm late but...

I'm thankful to the incorporators of our beloved sorority. There truly is no other like our sisterhood. Alpha Kappa Alpha
