Valentines Day Gift Ideas

I just started a relationship and was wondering what sort of things were appropriate to give for Valentines Day. I don't want to be over the top, but he is really special and I'm not sure what to get him!

Help!

Shawndalynn 01-19-2006 01:13 PM

I was wondering the same question. My boyfriend and I have been together since the beginning of September and I was trying to get some ideas for a gift from him too. :-)

tld221 01-21-2006 12:20 AM

damn, is it that time of year again? ugh...

amanda6035 01-21-2006 12:47 AM

This time last year, I had only been dating my now-fiance for 4 months, but at the same time, we were pretty serious already. I got him a silver keychain with some engraving on it...some cute simple quote on one side, and "Love, Amanda" on the other. He keeps his car keys on it now and he loves it.

TEH best.

A mixture of all would be the bestest.

....he looked freakin' HOT wearing it....*drool*

It's only $129, not too shabby.

uksparkle 01-23-2006 12:33 AM

I gave birth to our daughter so that's all he's getting for Valentine's Day.

Beer is a good idea...somebody just needs to give me a beer syllabus...

I tried Breckenridge's sampler in honor of the Broncos yesterday, too bad it didn't get the W. :(

What type of beer does he like? I (as well as the other beer drinkers on the board) could try to come up with a beer to fit his taste.

Make dinner at home and enjoy a night in.

That's the problem, he and I try just about everything we can. We regularly go to a place with 300 bottles and 100 on tap! I know he likes Stouts and Porters. He's a huge Guiness fan, almost a better question would be what he doesn't enjoy? (those are - Sam Adams Triple Bock, Eku 28 and Hacker-Schorr Weiss, also any generic domestic including miller lite, bud light, etc.)

I'm almost wondering if I should shy away from that and go more to whisky (the other thing he drinks)...or just scratch the whole alcohol themed gift idea?

valkyrie 01-23-2006 01:38 PM

Stouts and porters! I like him!

Are there any breweries in your area?

Whiskey is great - I'm a fan of it myself.

If he's a stout/porter fan, you may want to check out some of the Rogue beers. Their Chocolate Porter, Mocha Porter, and Shakespeare Stout are great beers. Sam Smith's Taddy Porter is also an excellent beer.

Like Valkyrie said, you may also want to check the breweries in your area. Maybe he can find a new favorite there.

jharb 01-23-2006 03:59 PM

I'll have to find some awesome crazy beer at the beer store and something else? Super Bowl tickets aren't in the forecast, although he likes the seahawks.

I don't want to get him anything silly like a bear or something like that. Bears are for losers? :p

This sounds like the best idea

PS. I'm cheap

Taualumna 01-23-2006 05:36 PM

I'm looking for gift ideas too. Mr. Tau says he's going to get me a watch, since he has a discount from his work, but what should I get him? He's a big NBA and NFL fan.

Did he tell you the part about the discount? Homey needs to work on his game a little. ;)

Take him to an NBA game. At least here, they're really fun and not too expensive.

GeekyPenguin 01-23-2006 06:28 PM

I think I will get my boyfriend something really hideous that no man could reasonably want.

Or maybe some DVDs and stuff for his apartment.

I had a friend in college who wrapped up some pinecones and gave it to his gf as a Vday present their first year together to see what her reaction would be in the future if he gave her a gift she didnt like. Her actual gift was one of those personalized calendars that you can put your own pictures for each month, so each month was a different picture of them...gag me...

Lady Pi Phi 01-24-2006 12:45 PM

I think I've decided to get Mr. Pi Phi a money clip. I want to have his initials engraved on it and "Love, Emily" with the date on the back. He refuses to carry his money in his wallet (which he only uses for his credit cards and such), so I thought it would be a nice gift and practical too. I was also thinking something more practical (Mr. Pi Phi likes practical gifts). He needs some comfy pyjama pants (because it's insanly cold in his room).

A friend once told me that he would give his wife gifts that he liked for the holidays...like a pocket knife, etc. This worked for several years until he got a box of women's pantyhose!

Once a girl I lived next to in the dorm got her boyfriend elephant boxers and the trunk rose and made an elephant noise when it got excited.

chitownxo 01-30-2006 11:02 PM

I'm going to be out of town, so I wanted to get Mr. Chitownxo something he'd really like. He's getting a $75 gift certificate to Hooters and a case of his favorite beer. I'm pretty sure he'll like it.

adpiucf 01-31-2006 11:29 AM

I think now we might do dinner at Morton's. I know, a far cry fro having dinner "in." My VP surprised me with a very nice gift certificate.... and V-Day is the perfect occasion to use it...

As far as gifts... Mr. ADPiUCF is Mr. Practical and his birthday and Christmas were tough, trying to figure out something he would like and use! So I'm just going to frame a photo of us from a recent formal event.

The Shit Bitch bear is not for losers!

ISUKappa 01-31-2006 12:19 PM

Nothing unless we decide to do dinner out somewhere. He's on a diet, I can't drink, and we both know nothing's going to happen in the bedroom, so what's the point?

Come to think of it, I don't think we've ever exchanged gifts on Valentine's day. We went to see a comedian one year, I've made him dinners, he's sent me flowers and we've gone out to eat, but never exchanged actual gfits.

I think I might get him an NFL book. We're going to a Raptors game in March.

And it's on order, I wasn't thinking of that bear. I was thinking more of the pink bears that are all OMG I WUB U MY HUNNY BEAR or some crap like that.

lagirl33 02-02-2006 05:23 PM

I just decided what I'm getting my boy for valentine's day :).

http://www.manhattanportage.com/cata...1704_large.jpg

He's been wanting a new bag for awhile...but wanted a compartment for his laptop (which this one has :)). I think I'm going to get it in olive green.

BetteDavisEyes 02-09-2006 02:53 PM

I've been thinking of what to give my husband for Vday. We've never really celebrated b/c we always just renew our Disneyland passports but we're not going to do that this year so now I'm trying to think of what to give him.

I was thinking of 2 tickets to the World Baseball Classic at Anaheim Stadium though the draw may not include the U.S. but I figure it wouldn't matter what teams play right?

That is an awesome gift. I want one lol. I still have no clue what to get the boy. He says he doesn't want anything so I don't know if I should get him something. I asked one of my guy friends what to get a guy for Valentine's Day and his response was "sex, lots of it."

VandalSquirrel 02-09-2006 05:50 PM

Since we're pretty casual in our "friendlationship" I'm getting him a gift card to the local movie theatre (enough for two tickets and snacks) and making him a certificate/card that states I will go to any movie he wants to see and not complain. He almost always pays when we go out, so this way I can pay for myself and him in an indirect manner. I may take him out to eat too, since he's taken me out quite a few times.

My other idea was making him a "cookie of the month" punch card and I'd bake him any kind of cookies he wanted every month for a year. However he already gets random cookie deliveries when I bake, so it just isn't as special.

Lil' Hannah 02-09-2006 05:56 PM

At my suggestion Mr. LH and I aren't going to exchange gifts and it's been very liberating. I recommend it to you all!

KSUViolet06 03-27-2006 06:00 PM

This past Valentine's Day was my first with my current boyfriend so I wasn't really sure what to do, seeing as I've always been single on Valentine's Day. I knew I didn't want to do the typical card, candy, and stupid bear thing. I ended up picking a recipe out of this "101 Romantic Dinners " cookbook and making it for him. It was fettucine alfredo in a white wine clam sauce with a side of asparagus. He was impressed since I don't really cook.

EPTriSigma 03-28-2006 01:36 PM

I had the most memorable Valentine's Day of my life this past year!

My boyfriend graduated this past December and has been working in Minneapolis (about two hours away from my school). I did not expect to see him because I had night class and he worked late. When I walked out of my night class he was standing there in a tux with a bottle of wine, cheese, crackers, chocolates, a dozen roses, the movie Must Love Dogs, and a bag full of yellow conversation hearts. He knows that the yellow hearts are my favorite so he bought a bunch of bags and picked out all the yellow ones. It was wonderful.

BobbyTheDon 03-28-2006 01:45 PM

I came home and my girlfriend had the lights turned out with two candles light on a table. I saw these two to go boxes, I opened them up and it was Roscoes Chicken & Waffles!
