American Idol 5

Anyone going to be watching this season?

AOIIalum 01-08-2006 04:10 PM

I've watched all of the others, so why quit now? :D

JenMarie 01-08-2006 04:28 PM

You know I'll be watching the trainwreck.

This should be fun!

tinydancer 01-08-2006 10:31 PM

The first auditions are the funniest. It just amazes me to hear all these people who THINK they can really sing.

It's not that they THINK they can sing, it's that they THINK that they will be on network television.

Tippiechick 01-08-2006 10:48 PM

I'll tune in if it's good. If it's another Diana Degarmo/Fantasia season, I'll find something else to watch.

amanda6035 01-08-2006 11:54 PM

What I find odd is that NONE of the idols really seem to make it - Kelly Clarkston is the only one I EVER hear on the radio.

Well, none of the first place winners anyway - Josh Gracin and Carrie underwood. Yay for Country!

PiKA2001 01-09-2006 12:22 AM

I really think that american idol should have been a one time thing, or maybe have one every two to three years. I think that the talent pool is running dry here in corporate rock america.

Half (all?) the time, they are being fed lines by the producers to make good television.

Carrie won last year... except I only hear her one song on my job's cable/satelitte radio sation.

Oops..I knew that! Yeah, shows how much I watch the show. I think I watched the last 3 episodes of the Fantasia season.

Nashville Star seems to have more talent and isnt quite so brutal. Except for Jody Evans - I swear he shoulda have been one of the first 2 out - but when he made it into the top 3 I thought I was going to ralph.

Thats because contestants in Nashville Star are actually musicians/songwriters, whereas most people who audition for American Idol only have experiance singing in school/church choirs or the shower.

texas*princess 01-10-2006 07:47 PM

I hear Kelly C's songs ALL THE TIME on the local Top 40 stations.

I've heard Josh G's & Carrie's songs (1 each?) on normal country stations, but they don't seem to get as much airtime as Kelly Clarkson.

Rollergirl2001 01-11-2006 02:06 AM

I'm going to be in the minority and say no. I rather watch ESPN College basketball games and Nashville Star than a bunch of horrible singers with a one-hit wonder waiting to happen. I really don't care for that show. Yes, I'm female, so what?

I don't think it matters if you're a guy or girl...even with this type of show. :)

amanda6035 01-11-2006 08:34 AM

Another one I just realized I hear on the radio pretty frequently is Miranda Lambert - but I cant remember if she was on Idol or Nashville Star.

AOIIalum 01-11-2006 03:43 PM

I've never heard of her, which means she wasn't on AI.

*GASP* And lose out on all the cash they get from AMEX and Coca-Cola???? The idea!

Yeah, I completely agree with you.

texas*princess 01-16-2006 07:25 PM

Season premier is tomorrow!

KatieKD 01-16-2006 11:38 PM

I'm guessing that during the preliminary auditions, the ones that allow you to go before the judges, they keep the really good people and for fun the really bad people. So the really bad peope either just wanna be on TV or really think they're good because, well, who would tell them otherwise except for Simon Cowell?

I think they just want to be on TV

PoohsHoneyBee 01-17-2006 09:07 PM

it's finally starting... i'm so excited

texas*princess 01-17-2006 10:14 PM

I really like Zach's voice.

I also feel like a dirty old woman b/c I think he is a teensy bit cute too :o

DeltAlum 01-18-2006 01:04 AM

OK, I'm going to have to actually watch the show tomorrow night (Wednesday) for the Denver auditions.

Watch for Erica Walters. She and our son went to High School together and were in musicals, choirs, etc. together.

She was a real belter even four or five years ago.

Mrs. DA says she just saw her on tomorrow's promo.

AznSAE 01-18-2006 12:28 PM

i saw the last few minutes of this show last night. that one girl with the crasy tan was pretty bad. and that one guy that was jumping up and down with no shoes didnt sound that good either, but they let him through anyways.

BetteDavisEyes 01-18-2006 03:13 PM

What was up with the chick that had the awful tan & her equally trashy mother??? Dear God. The girl could barely put a coherent sentence together & when they showed her mom, my jaw hit the floor. Talk about dressing way too young for your age. That woman had to be in her 40's or 50's & was dressed like a 16 yr. old but with really bad hair & make-up.

JenMarie 01-18-2006 04:30 PM

I think Yvette Gomez went to my elementary school... and probably continued on to the high school choir program that we fed into. It really surprised me that she was so BAD. Her former choir director must have been pissed.

I still don't understand the point of letting in pre-18 year old "crooners." It didn't work for Johnny Redhead in Season 3. The Boy was terrible outside of the Rat Pack genre. I mean I liked the 17 year old that was a good Sinatra impersonator... but he won't be that great outside his genre... unless he pulls an Aiken and just blows every genre out of the water.

I'm rooting for crazy Dave. I wanna see what he does from now on. Or if it was just another gimick.

The "I Shot the Sherrif" police man and the Ashley Simpson meets Paris Hilton meets can of orange paint were hysterical.

AchtungBaby80 01-18-2006 06:47 PM

I usually don't watch the auditions, so I'll pick up whenever the actual competition begins... :D In the meantime, this thread with substitute nicely.

texas*princess 01-18-2006 07:33 PM

Crazy Tan Girl was definitely bad.

I almost died of laughter when they called her mom in.

It's one thing to dress like that and have perfect skin b/c you can afford the best plastic surgons in the world, which is still bad, but it's SOO MUCH FUNNIER when someone dresses like that and they have sagging skin and wrinkles all over.

Good gawd. Her eyeshadow was the exact same as her 16-yr old daughter's.

kddani 01-18-2006 09:08 PM

Have my favorite already- the girl with the long curly black hair who sang "One Moment In Time" who was in Variety Magazine.

texas*princess 01-18-2006 09:39 PM

awwww I'm way excited the cowboy made it to Hollywood. I think he won't win the competition, but I think it will be a great experience for him since he lives in a town of like 4 people and only sings to his turkey.

kddani 01-18-2006 09:42 PM

watching some of these people who have these huge sob stories about how broke they are (I'm thinking about the Chain of Fools girl who did have a good voice and did make it, but there's so many people like this)- I can't help but wonder if they are in such dire straits, getting evicted, etc. then how can all of their friends and family afford to come with them to some city where they don't live to cheer that person on? It's great to have such support, but if you're that bad off, doesn't that seem like money that could be better spent?

Ditto

DeltAlum 01-18-2006 11:10 PM

I'm officially bummed.

I've never watched this dumb show until last night, then our son's friend is in tonight's promo -- so I watched the silly thing again and she doesn't perform.

But, she was in the quick shots at the end of the show of the people who go on to Hollywood, so I guess it's great for her.

I just feel so "used." Those damned TV people are all alike...

(Hee, hee)

LeslieAGD 01-19-2006 06:05 PM

My fiance's former student auditioned and made it to Hollywood, so we've been looking for her on the show. I hope they actually show her singing.

They turned the Denver auditions into a freak show. Our (son's) friend also went onto Hollywood, but they didn't show any part of her actual audition.

She is beautiful and was a great belter when the kids were in school together.

Oh well.

texas*princess 01-19-2006 08:21 PM

I kind of wish that the audition episodes showed more of the people who actually MADE it to the next level. As funny as it is to see some of the AI rejects, it feels like the same thing over and over and over again when they show the ppl who can't sing.

That girl went to my husbands high school!! When we saw what town she was from we almost died!! She was on the local Fox news last night here and she was so upset about how they portrayed her that she didn't go to school the next day. Does she(or her mom) not realize that when they signed the release form to tape her that they could/would edit her audition?!?
