Regifting
Another holiday approaches and I just thought we should revisit once again how EVIL and tacky regifting is . . .
Remember, you don't Regift to people you truly care about :) |
As a entry level hire, my company gives you a "mentor" you can talk to for advice etc. Last saturday was my department's holiday party and everyone sans their mentors were invited. We got these party favors that contained a number of things including a bag of homemade chex mix. One of my coworkers mentors sits right by me and she came by his desk the other day to give him a christmas gift....which included a homemade bag of chex mix...still in the same packaging that we got on Saturday..
 |
LOL. One of my classes was collecting presents for underprivileged Hispanic kids and on the last day of class, I found out that many of the moms of these kids had never received Christmas presents. I shot out a campus email explaining the situation and asking people who might have gifts they just, ahem, couldn't use--a 10th box of mints? a bottle of bath oil in their least favorite scent?--to please bring them down to me.
I was bombarded. Some Guatemalan ladies are going to have a very Merry Christmas! |
My absolute favorite aunt in the world got me 3 awful perfumes from Avon. But she knew that I love perfume (not the kind from Avon usually) so I can't bring myself to give them away and when I visit her I always spray it on me even though it kinda makes me choke.

In my book, regifting is only acceptable if you have someone that could actually use and appreciate what's being regifted. My mom got a picture frame from one of her coworkers that she just didn't have any use for. Hoever, I knew that my best friend liked that frame and would've wanted it, so I just kinda took it from my mom and threw it in along with the rest of her present.

The preschool I worked at during college always had a Secret Santa, and one year one of my co-teachers gave her person a really nice scarf. Approximately an hour later, she found out that the same person had her; she received the same scarf, in the same wrapping paper (the person had opened the present, then re-wrapped it).
I just about died laughing. |

At my wedding I got one of those "Thunder Stick" mixers/blenders from someone...and when I unwrapped it, it had pieces of Christmas paper still stuck to it... |
one christmas my mother gave my aunt(her sister in law) a beautiful silk scarf-just my aunts style too. the following christmas guess what gift my mother received from my aunt? you got it-the scarf.
i don't have a problem with regifting, IF: the recipient could actually use the gift the recipient was not the original giver a different box is used and the gift has never been used |
The names of the people involved in this story will remain secret to protect the guilty.
Besides, it's hearsay anyway. Knowing the giver, however, it's easy for me to believe. A big time network sports producer went to the retirement party of a long time crew member (cameraman, I think) and really shocked everyone by giving the retiree a brand new set of super high priced golf clubs. It wasn't until he got home and looked closely that the guy noticed that each club was engraved as a gift from the company to the producer. I suppose that's one way of getting rid of something you shouldn't have accepted in the first place. |

My mother & I both have a "regifting" closet. Anything not given after one year goes to charity auctions. For some reason, people seem to think I love to take baths (the very thought of sitting in bathwater filth grosses me out!), so there are some really nice things in those closets!! |

One year, I gave my cousin a really gorgeous silver necklace that I myself liked. The following year when we went to visit her and her family, we were going through her jewelry box and when I saw the necklace, I said "I love that necklace, it's so pretty." Her response, "you can take it if you want, someone gave it to me and I hate it."

i will admit that i have done this once or twice. one year, a co-worker gave me an angel vase. it was really pretty, but my sil collects angels and i knew she would love it. i gave it to her in addition to the other things i had already purchased. she was thrilled.
i actually got something this year that i have considered regifting- a really beautiful gift set from the body shop. honestly, i just don't have any more room on my shelf for more lotions, etc. |

One Christmas a long time ago, I needed something for my mom's stocking, so I put in a bottle of my own perfume...it smelled really nice and thought she'd like it, even if I'd used some. Well, turns out that she knew the brand--I'd borrowed it from her months before, then forgot it'd been hers in the first place! Oh well, I was in junior high, I was entitled to an airhead moment.

That's a great idea...and better then regifting in most cases |

Maybe we should have a big GC regift exchange. |

Mary Kay 4-step facial set w/instructions. It's a nice thought but I need a simple process at night. I'm sure I will find someone that uses Mary Kay.;)

Believe it or not, the BEST gift that I gave anyone this year was a regift and a truly hideous one at that!
I attended Mr. Silver's work party where we all played white elephant Dirty Santa. Some of the gifts there were obviously NOT white elephant gifts, and the items that I took to exchange were truly nice, but just not our style. Much to my horror, I got a mini "crumb vacuum" shaped like a LAMB...just what I want on my holiday table! It is really hard to put into words how truly hideous this piece of molded plastic is. Just envision the lamb from "Mary Had a Little Lamb" with a suction mouth. Even now, it gives me the creeps just thinking about it. As a gag, I gave it to my niece thinking that she could play with it in her doll house. She loved it! Several people in Mr. Silver's family tried it out on the little pieces of thread left over from the nieces' friendship bracelets kits. Who would have thought? Silver |
