Guys Wearing Letter Shirts?
 

I have a question, at my school all the fraternity brothers (for all the chapters) wear shirts/jerseys with the sewed on greek letters. Now that i am at home and i wear mine, friends from other schools tell me that "only girls wear those at my school, guys dont wear their letters, they wear their social shirts or rush shirts". I have heard this from multiple people and am wondering which is more common?

Guys wear stitch letters at the University of Houston. I don’t think anyone has ever refereed to it as a girly thing to do.

Guys did that all the time at my school - we called them "power letters," but they were definitely worn, I have a sweatshirt and t-shirt just like you described, and I used to wear them all the time.

I think your friends are the ones with the problem - stitched letters are a sign of respect, as opposed to the mixer tees.

ummm...yea, never be ashamed of wearing your letters. That's just stupid. Wearing your letters is something very special, not a fashion statement.

There are some schools where letter shirts aren't worn that often... but I'd say that's usually for guys and girls. I say do what you want!

We wore them at Chicago...but it wasn't an everyday thing.

I still wear mine.

I've never heard that it's only a girl thing, but maybe some schools are like that. Are you wearing a tank top or is it a normal male shirt?

Guys never wear those here... some of the smaller fraternities do though.

The guys at New Mexico State wear their letter stichted or screen printed.

Guys wear their "jerseys" (as ive heard them called) here. Not as often as the girls wear them, but they definately do.

The only thing that, I feel, should be considered inappropriate are outside companies advertising within your letters. Like, a gucci or burberry (sic?) pattern inside something that is personally yours exudes trendiness or tackiness. One of those two. wow, it's like one of those rare times I agree with erik p conard . But I'll tell you this... you should wear your letters. Your letters shouldn't wear you.

1. Reason to wear Letters.
a. Advertising Your Greek Organization.
b. Show that You are a Proud Member of Said Greek Organization.

2. Reason to not wear Your Letters.
a. You are not Proud to be a Member of Your Orgaization.
b. You dont want others to join.
c. Embarresd by Your Organization.

Unfortunately at My Alma Mater (:( ) hardly any Greek Organizations wear their Letters.

I always tell My Guys, wear Your/Our Letters unless You are not proud enough to.

I still wear Mine on occasions when I can, especially when I go to any function where there are My Brothers and I am on Campus!:)

I don't feel like guys not wearing there letters doesn't necessarily mean that they are embarassed by their organization. Most of the men I know in larger organizations feel that they don't need that kind of publicity, as they get enough via reputation and word of mouth.

For similar reasons, I as a female rarely wear my letter shirts. This has nothing to do with being embarassed/not proud of my sorority. I've had the same people in my classes for the past 2 1/2 years; they know I'm a Tri-Delt by now. (Besides I almost never wear t-shirts outside of the house)

i wore my pledge jersey with the stitched letters maybe 3 or so times. i gave it away this past semester to another brother because it was too big on me. if i had a smaller one, i would wear it all the time.

Actually, I am talking more about wearing Polo Shirts with Letters. I too dont like T-Shirts on Campus, but I am, of the old school! Look good and be proud of Yourselve along with Your Organization.

Maybe coming from a small school, @6,500 when We all wore letters has something to to do with My thinking.:)

I also dont feel it is neccessary to wear Beer, Shoe ad T-Shirts on campus either.

I dont wear Old Navy, Gap, or anyother Shirt that I have to pay money for and not get paid in return for advertising for them.

Guys at IU wear their letter sweatshirts/Tshirts all the time. I've seen lots of guys in the city of Chicago do the same thing.

I've found from my undergrad and also grad that guys tend to have less sets of stitched letters than the women do for a variety of reasons and because of that, they tend not to be seen as much in them

I don't think that's necessarily true. Granted, I have been away for 2 years, but I always saw guys walking around in letter shirts. Maybe not as often as us girls because we had a weekly "letter day" and all that, but it definitely wasn't unusual to see a guy wearing letters...even the ones in the "big" fraternities.

Letters are a BIG thing at Rio, I see at least a few people a day from each org in letters of some sort.

I've seen guys wearing lettered jerseys all the time and on many different campuses.

In my experience, while females may have jerseys in a variety of colors, guys tend to stick with fraternity colors.

There are 2 or 3 fraternities that RARELY wear any letters of any kind...when they do its always this, "really? i never knew" sort of reaction. The other 4 wear letters like it is their job. The guys are very specific about their letters...as in they only get them in their fraternity colors, never in patterns. The girls are all about the patterns as it identifies a specific line in the sorority. You see letters EVERY SINGLE DAY here...someone is always wearing them. Then again, according to Princeton Review, 28% are in Fraternities, and 28% are in Sororities. Keep in mind that's out of 3500 students.

guys at my current campus don't tend to wear the fabric letters much, let alone other letters. the cultural groups tend to wear the fabric letters more, always in their colors. at my undergrad, guys in all chapters wear fabric letter shirts in their colors, while the girls find all the cute fabric to make their letters.

guys tend to just put them on regular shirts and sometimes jerseys.

Greeks here at ECU wear their letters frequently.... although typically Wednesdays are "letter days" for us.
