Attn: Pittsburghers- the "O" is for sale!

I can't find the link, but I read about it yesterday.

The owner is selling the O, but will retain the trademarks and all that.

BobbyTheDon 12-01-2005 02:24 PM

The Original Hot Dog Shop, also known as the Dirty O. The best fries ever, huge portions- they've been on the Food Network and all that. Good hotdogs too. It's very much a Pittsburgh institution. Located right by Pitt (Pitt may own the building, i'm not sure?).

You can go after a Clarks concert. Lol. It's open until like 4 am or something.

honeychile 12-01-2005 03:04 PM

LOL - I met my college sweetie there - your standard "cute meet"! A year later, he ended up living up above it. Pitt didn't own it then, but may by now. I think the university owns anything in Oakland after X amount of years!!

Bobby, their hot dogs & sausages are really good, but their french fries!!!!! Some people mistakenly order a large french fry, not knowing that a large is the whole freakin' fry basket!!!

Suddenly I'm in the mood for a hot dog...

One of my sisters lived in that apartment one year! She had it decorated with lawn furniture and Christmas lights.

I want to buy the O so that I can assure it will be there when our children and grandchildren get the drunk munchies and need a chicken parm at 1 am.

Dani, I won't be in Pittsburgh until spring but I definitely think an O pilgrimage will be in order :)

Alpha Sig Scott 12-02-2005 02:17 PM

Are O fries fresh cut or poured out of a bag?

I'm going to guess fresh cut.

honeychile 12-02-2005 02:28 PM

The fries are fresh cut, and KR, we DEFINITELY need a Dirty O run!! Just name the date!

PhoenixAzul 12-02-2005 02:47 PM

Oh man, many a great night I have had at the O. After shows at Laga (now theyre making into lofts)...I also used to hang out at "the wall" (right in front of Pitt Law/across from the O) all the time. I cant believe that the O is closing, man those fries ruled.

33girl 12-02-2005 02:53 PM

I don't think it's definite it will close...it just sounds like the owners want to get out of the business.

SOPi_Jawbreaker 12-02-2005 06:44 PM

Maybe, all the Pittsburgh GCer's should get together and buy the place. So that way the rest of us can get a special GC discount the next time we're in Pittsburgh. ;)

Tom Earp 12-02-2005 07:16 PM

If they want to get out of the Bus. why dont they want to give up the Logos and Tags?

If they dont, it will be just another greasy dog joint or less!

Tom - the guys who are selling are just selling the rights to the name Original Hot Dog Shop, the concept, the recipes blah blah. They don't own the physical building nor is it for sale.

Tom Earp 12-03-2005 06:59 PM

Well then, It Might Be Worth something then wont it!

Building Dont Make a Dog Joint if one can be found near the area!

Ambiance is Important isnt it! But if it is all it is then Die You Filthy Dawg!:)

Tom, this is definitely a case in point of "location, location, location"! It is well within stumbling distance to at least 8 dorms, to say nothing of all the apartments nearby. The home plate from Forbes Field is less than a block away. The closing of the O would definitely be, in the eyes of anyone from Pitt, CMU, Duquesne, and Pittsburgh in general, catastrophic! We're talking MAJOR LANDMARK here!!

Ah Yes, the Old Location, Location is Prime!:D

We have the :1106: in My "THE PITT"!

Great Tenders, Burgers, and Curly Fries! The same today as Years ago. A National Treasure!

Was across from Our First House, thank goodness.

Hope for The Other Pittsburg"H"ers, it can be saved!:)

perdido88 01-03-2006 08:33 PM

yup! a very fine Pittsburgh institution much like Primanti Bros. (great sandwiches) and other long gone features like Corleone's Pizza.

I hope they retain the name, food quality and service. It'd be a shame to see the "O" go into Oblivion.

We loved that place! It was always worth the trip down the street. I cannot believe another buyer/owner isn't interested. Oh well, make room for another Starbucks.
