Real or Fake

Christmas Trees?????

What do you put up at Christmas time- a real or fake tree?

We have always done the fake tree- until this year. Our fake tree was looking crappy so we decided to look for a new tree this year. While out shopping I found some nice priced fake trees- then I saw the tree--- they were sparse and short. I wanted a tall tree that was full (lots of tips) yet skinny enough not to over power the room. All the trees that met my requirements were $250 on up.
We went to Home Depot and bought a real tree--- it was on sale for $22---- lots of branches, nice shape, blue spruce that is 9 feet tall!!!! And it smells wonderful!!!! :)

kddani 11-25-2005 07:44 PM

fake pre-lit trees rock :) not allowed to have real trees in my apartment complex

We always get a real tree every year. It seems like they're been getting more and more expensive year, so I think my mom may invest in an artificial this year.

Do they sell stuff to spray on fake trees to give them that "pine-y" smell? :p

UofISigKap 11-25-2005 07:51 PM

I have a fake tree, but I wish I had a real one. Apartments around here are a little picky about them. I love the smell of pine, so I burn pine scented candles. It's not the same, but it'll do for now.

Dionysus 11-25-2005 07:53 PM

Small fake trees.

KSUViolet06 11-25-2005 07:53 PM

We've always had a fake one. We tried a real tree once. It left needles, little acorn type things, and bugs behind. It was also just really hard to get set up.

Tom Earp 11-25-2005 07:57 PM

Had A Fake Tree For Years!!!

The Thing Is, decorate it tjhe Way Yu Want! It wont Burn or Flamer Up!

I am offering Mine and want it gone soon! Bad Memories!!!!

KatieKate1244 11-25-2005 08:20 PM

We've always done real trees, despite the fact half my family are allergic to them. We're getting a fake one this year, as my sister has had some bad asthma attacks due to her allergies.

My mom nearly slugged me when I told her to get a pink tinsel tree. :p

midwesterngirl 11-25-2005 08:23 PM

Fake for my house. My house is so dry ,it would be a fire hazard to have a real one.

Xylochick216 11-25-2005 08:26 PM

My family is allergic to real, so we've always had fake. We also have a nice revolving base so the tree slowly spins all night long :)

Hubby and I bought a 7-foot tree the day afte Christmas last year. It was supposed to be $120 and I think we paid $15. It's gorgeous.

HBADPi 11-25-2005 08:32 PM

We had real for awhile until my sisters allergies got really bad and we switched to fake. We got our fake one in the after christmas sales the last yr we got a real one. Now that I have my own place I have invest in a fake one. I went to Lowe's today to pick up the 6.5 ft pre-lit tree they were selling for $25 but they had already sold out and I was looking forward to decorating this wkend :(

AOX81 11-25-2005 08:39 PM

We have a fake tree. I didn't put it up last year and I doubt that we'll put it up this year. Too much of a hassle for only two people to see it...

AOIIBrandi 11-25-2005 08:42 PM

We always buy real ones. It wouldn't be Christmas without going to pick it out.

AlphaSigOU 11-25-2005 08:44 PM

None at all - real or fake - for me!

ZTAMich 11-25-2005 08:58 PM

We've always had a fake tree. Color-coded to show which branch goes where. The tree seemed HUGE when I was little, but as I 'grow up' it seems like it gets smaller!! :(

The big debate in our house is what kind of lights we're going to put on the tree: the old large bulbs or the newer tiny twinkle lights!

jitterbug13 11-25-2005 09:44 PM

We've always had a fake tree. If I wanted to see a real one, I'll go to my grandparents' house.

RedRoseSAI 11-25-2005 11:30 PM

I'm all about the fake tree. Generally, I'm not a tree-hugger, but for some reason I feel bad about taking a perfectly innocent conifer from its woodland home and sequestering it to my living room to die a slow death before being unceremoniously tossed out in the alley once my need for Christmastime gaiety has been fulfilled.

Besides, real trees shed like crazy. Have you ever seen a dog barf up pine needles? It's not cute.

DolphinChicaDDD 11-25-2005 11:34 PM

We've always had real trees in my house. It was one of my favorite traditions with my family. We would all load into the car and spend a few hours in the "country" picking out a tree. This year my mom is really pushing for a fake tree. I should let her get it since its been years my family has gone out and actually cut down a tree and all. Especially since my brother is no longer at home either.

But I dunno. I still kinda want my real tree.

irishpipes 11-25-2005 11:34 PM

We have a gorgeous fake tree. I grew up with both, but the fear of a fire with a real tree was too much for me. The fake trees are so much better (more real-looking) than the one we had when I was a kid - it was half bald.

By the way, I was sure this thread was about boobs when I saw it. If that were the case, my answer would switch to "real." ;)

AGDee 11-26-2005 12:34 AM

I have a fake tree with built in lights. My daughter would be in the hospital for the whole season with her allergies if I went with real. It's a lot less maintenance too.

honeychile 11-26-2005 01:35 AM

I'm the allergy-ridden person in our house - we had a real tree for the last time when I was about 6.

Both my mother & I have the pre-lit fake types that open like an umbrella - HEAVEN after trying to figure out which color went where!! She does hers with all the traditional, old ornaments from long ago, though, and I do mine in a white, gold and pink, color theme. It works for both of us!

christiangirl 11-26-2005 03:16 AM

I've always had real trees, I especially love the white flocking

Oh yeah I also bought a 4ft red tinsel tree yesterday! My husband rolled his eyes- I showed my mom she liked it but laughed and said I could have a trailer park christmas with it!

AchtungBaby80 11-26-2005 01:11 PM

My parents had a fake tree for years because we had carpet in the living room, and my stepdad didn't want pine needles to get in it. But now that they have hardwood floors, we still use the old fake one because it's kind of a tradition...but my mom and I love the smell of real ones.

I guess it's an Alpha Sig thing:D

TV top fake tree that used to be my grandma & grandpa's, so even though it's looking a little ragged, it has great sentimental value.

Although I don't know where I'm going to put it this year - my new TV is not flat on the top.

kstar 11-26-2005 02:31 PM

My father always had a fake one, since mom and I have bad allergies. Mom and I refered to it as the Channukah bush.

My boyfriend puts up a fake one, for my allergies, and so the pups don't go around marking the tree.

AOIIalum 11-26-2005 03:28 PM

Real tree, freshly cut if at all possible.

Tom Earp 11-26-2005 06:00 PM

Real Trees can Be a Fire Hazard!:(

The Decorations are the Main Thing!!! Make It Look Gorgeuous and Pretty!

Had Home Made Ornements and looked Fantastic, Now, I will pass it along!

:D

Really Makes no difference, Got To Have some Place for Santa Claus to Put The Presents!:D

MTSUGURL 11-26-2005 06:14 PM

Fake trees only. My mother kills anything with leaves (or needles...)

We once pulled leaves off of a silk ficus in our den over a period of months. It was only recently that I told her this - up until then, she would tell people she couldn't even keep silk plants alive.

summer_gphib 11-27-2005 01:28 PM

We always have a real tree! The day after Thanksgiving we go up to a local tree farm, and take a horse drawn wagon out to find the perfect tree. They cut it and everything and then we go back and have hot apple cider! Too much fun!

:-)

aephi alum 11-27-2005 02:51 PM

Neither for me, I'm Jewish. ;)

When I was growing up (my family is Catholic) we used to get a real tree every year. The things dropped needles like crazy. So, when my parents had the house re-carpeted (the new carpet had a thick pile), they decided, no more real trees - they didn't want to still be finding needles in June. :p So they got a small fake tree. They just recently got a new tree, with the lights built in - just plug it in, stick a few ornaments on it if you want, and you're done.

ISUKappa 11-27-2005 04:08 PM

I always grew up with a real tree so that's what we have now. In fact, we just got ours today: a 9' Frasier Fir that smells just heavenly. I can't wait to set it up and start decorating.

EEKappa 11-27-2005 05:25 PM

When I saw the title of this thread, it made me think of the Seinfeld episode with Teri Hatcher that just re-ran last week. ;)

We do both: Years that we are home, we get the tallest real tree that will fit in our living room. And every other year we travel to visit my family for a week at Christmas, so we haul the one out of the basement and set it up. That way we don't come home to a dried-out tree and a pile of needles on the floor.

mmcat 11-27-2005 10:50 PM

we were real until two years ago when my mom decided to go fake. now they are well pleased and it looks very similar to the kind we used to have.

PoohsHoneyBee 11-28-2005 01:13 AM

i just bought my mom a real one, literally
it's a small three foot tree sitting in a pot full of soil... i told her to plant it once christmas is over, we'll see how long it lasts in south texas

bsp-mich24 11-28-2005 11:44 PM

I've had both but like the smell of the live trees.

This year was the 1st time I went to a tree farm. It inexpensive and not too many needles on the carpet yet.;)

CUGreekgirl 11-28-2005 11:52 PM

When I was younger we had a little scrawny 6 ft fake tree. It seemed HUGE when I was younger but when we decided to put it up two christmases ago b/c mom had cancer and the bigger tree was too much work, I almost cried when i saw it. It was the most pathetic looking tree ever.

We have had a 9 ft, fake tree for the past 10 yrs and it is beautiful. Mom insists on putting colored lights on it, which I think looks a little ghetto. She is thinking about getting a new prelit one this year, but I told her she couldn't b/c they didn't come with colored lights.

But she informed me that she had already checked and the prelit ones do come with colored lights. Guess we'll have a ghetto fab christmas tree again this year.

This is our house, too :)

We always had real trees up until the year we discovered I was highly allergic (after we had already cut it down and set it up in our house - lucky for our church, they got a free tree that year!)

I love our fake Christmas tree. It's almost an antique - my grandmother bought it back when my mom was a kid the day after Christmas (it's 32 years old). It stands probably around 7 feet tall - it just about touches the roof of our living room - it has "snow covered" tips, and the branches are color coded, and we've used it so much for so many years that the grooves for each branch on the pole are pretty worn out...we've got to see if we can find someone to "make" us a new pole, because you better believe I'll have this tree when I have my own home! :p

leesek 11-29-2005 12:52 AM

We always have a real tree or two.

We have a "family" tree that has colored lights and all the ornaments that my kids made, and we have a tree in the living room that has clear lights and gold and silver and burgandy ornaments and bows.

Last year I was only going to do one tree and my kids went ballistic!!!
