Racism: It still does exist

Sad but all so true. Our world has not changed in some aspects.

Read this.

http://www.wltx.com/news/news19.aspx?storyid=32116

WLTX) - Members of USC's Greek community have been identified as posting racist messages in an online forum. The messages target Omega Psi Phi, an African-American fraternity that's about to move into the Greek Village.

The web site, www.fratty.net, is not run by the university. It's actually based in California, and is a place where members of fraternities and sororities can talk with each other about topics of interest to them.

Some recent posts by USC students have been called negative and racist. The posts refer to the upcoming move of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity to USC's Greek Village, which currently consists of traditionally white organizations.

The language used in some of the messages is offensive, and has university officials looking to discipline those responsible. Dr. Dennis Pruitt is Vice President of Student Affairs.

"We are not going to allow students to engage in behavior that threatens or intimidates other students."

Vince Ford works with members of Omega Psi Phi around the world. He doesn't think this incident should give USC a black eye.

"Because it's not the entire university, not even the entire Greek community. What you have is likely four or five people who have expressed some negativity, and that's unfortunate."

Fraternity and Sorority members we spoke with disagreed on how the historically black fraternity would be accepted in the Greek Village. Some said it would be a positive change, while others said the messages on the web site reflect a real feeling of hatred by some on campus.

USC officials say they're looking into how to handle the incident, and how to better educate the entire student body about taking part in oline message boards.

Bruhz,
Here are some of the comments made from the website's message board regarding our inclusion in the Greek Village. The more things change, the more they remain the same:

That cotton idea is funny as ***** and a great way to set the tone for their time here. Hopefully, the house never actually gets built, though. It will only bring loud niggers, even louder nigger bitches, and trashy *** wiggers and white-trash girls around. But hopefully Darwin was right and these spooks will wind up tearing the house down in a week or two. Much longer than that and well have to do it for them. What do you say guys? Heres to ridding the village of our african-american infestation

This posting is so sad. I don't understand why people make such stereotypical remarks. The color of someone's skin does not reflect who they are.

This world seems to be getting worse instead of better. It really does make you want to just cry.

***Sorry to crash your board*****I just had to say something

The Inquisitive One 11-15-2005 10:50 AM

No problem.

It is really sad to hear this continues to exist at a alarming rate.

Sadly now the internet provides another means of people hiding behind the "white sheets".

The even worse part is, you can be going to school and/or working with these same people and not even know it.

Another note, I was watching John Singleton's, Higher Learning movie the other night as it is ironic that while made ten years ago, the movie still relates to things that are going on today at these big predominately white universities.

v

its disturbing and sad.

DELTABRAT 11-15-2005 02:49 PM

The even sadder part is that USC is in the 'hood already. So these students are walking around every day with "those people" and of course, not saying **** for fear of a much warrented beat down. Now they have something to say.

I am really happy though because back in the day the AKA's used to have a house in the area...not on the row but real close by (don't know if it's still there) and the Bruhs used to have a makeshift house (i.e. someone's apartment where it was always on and crackin') and even though I am OLD...I am sure some old head Bruhs would be up in there every now and again mixin' it up.

I wish some white folks would throw some cotton on some grass. It would be on.

I can't wait. "We" need some houses in the Los Angeles area. Lord knows that can't nobody afford anything in the rivaled town of Westwood and surrounding areas, so...

I'm old so I can't roll but it's a logn time coming...

Steeltrap 11-15-2005 02:55 PM

^^
DB, I think this post is about the University of South Carolina, not my alma mater.
And yes, our L.A. grad chapter still has the house on Ellendale Place. I've not been there, however.

jitterbug13 11-15-2005 03:01 PM

It's my USC (South Carolina)...not yours (Southern Cal) :(

Of course, the whole thing has me P.O.

It is utterly despicable, but not surprising.

Bottom line is that you can't legislate morality, and the anonymity of the Internet only exacerbates this situation.

I wonder if these little clowns would have the b**** to tell the men of Omega Psi Phi some of this crap. No, they wouldn't. If you are going to be bigoted, be up front with it so I can know how to stay out of your way.

...i know that's right!

...still hiding behind those sheets...??? I remember when i was in undergrad @ NCCU, some students at Duke hung black dolls from trees all over the campuses. its sad that "supposedly" educated people still act/think like this in 2005. but its they're own doggon fault b/c i don't think none of our people asked to be brought over here from africa!

i think the worst part is that we go to school and work with people like this everyday and know it. but i'm like bernie mac..."i wish a mutha***** would..."

DELTABRAT 11-17-2005 01:30 PM

That's OK, soror. And ST, I agree with you. If those dudes who said that ever came up to Zeta Zeta (the Omega chaper) and said it to their faces....Lord have mercy on their souls....:o :o

MightyQuinn 07-15-2006 06:18 AM

Pathetic..

I wish I could say I'm shocked but unfortunately I'm far from it. I didn't need anyone to tell me racism is alive and well or stupidity for that matter. Racists don't need to hide behind sheets anymore because they have their username instead. I'm smart enough to know that all caucasians don't think like this but I also know that there are plenty that do.

KDAngel 07-31-2006 05:02 AM

So I just stumbled upon this thread when I was looking for something else and it's still so awful to know crap like this goes on. There is actually a fraternity on my campus that openly said they wouldn't have socials with us as long as we had the only african american girl in the NPC system. As soon as she graduated they had NO problems with us. And now another fraternity won't do things because we have the most beautiful and amazing girl from an Iranian or Iraqi background. And our social calendar is beyond full and we're the biggest sorority on campus right now, so it's so far to figure out why people can be so stupid and shallow... it's just sad.

RedefinedDiva 07-31-2006 09:37 AM

You ladies should flip the script and REFUSE to do activities and programs with THEM because of their ignorance. If you go back to doing stuff with them after the "outcast" is gone, your org. is still condoning their behavior.

I'm curious to know their reasoning behind this. Did the fraternity worry that the girls would trip, fall, and land on them, making bi-racial babies or something?

pinkies up 07-31-2006 03:40 PM

Lord, ya'll know I live in Mississippi, home of Good Ole Boy Trent Lott, so this is nothing new to me. However, I think that a lot of things have changed for the better. I'd much rather know if someone is a racist than for them to act like they like me. Soror Maya said it best when she said "When people show you who they are, believe them." As far as mixin' it up and making some bi-racial babies, let 'em go ahead because we turn into some fine people.

Lady of Pearl 07-31-2006 03:53 PM

Reminds me of the incident when they burned a cross at the University of Alabama many years ago, when Alpha Kappa Alpha got a house on campus.

Yeah, no clue. And it's funny because I had dated a guy in the fraternity I mentioned most recently having a problem for over 2years and when I asked him about it afterwards he just acted like that's just the way things were and I NEVER would have taken him to be like that before. And I don't even think he is, I just like it was like a shared brain or among all the guys or something. Who knows. Totally stupid though obviously.

Lady of Pearl 07-31-2006 07:58 PM

So sad, that racism is still alive and thriving on most American Universities and these are supposed to be educated people!

shinerbock 07-31-2006 09:07 PM

It isn't just universities obviously. Racism is alive and well in every state, in every country. It comes from all sides and effects all people.

now dont even go there on Trent Lott, i have met trent lott and talked to him and he is a admirable man that actually stands up for what he believes in whats the matter with trying to make a 100 year old man feel better. I dont think it was out of line for him to say that at all. He was just stating the truth, Mississippi voted for Strom Thurman in the election of 1948. And the whole part about us being better off if he was elected, well we might have been - he was a States Rights Democrat. they basically were republicans. They thought the government was over stepping their boundries by telling the states they have to do this or that. The federal government only has the power that is given to them in the constitution and the 10th amendment states says the powers not given to the federal government were given to the states to decide - all he was wanting was for the states to decide for themselves if they wanted to go on with the civil rights act. this type of view would help alot today with abortion, stem cell, gay marriage - let each state decide for themselves b/c its the federal government over stepping their boundries

pinkies up 07-31-2006 10:13 PM

Blah Blah Blah. Trent Lott is a racist. He was sweating bullets when Tavis Smiley was interviewing him about his remarks. People who describe the serial killers that lived next door describe them as "nice people" too. I live in a state where the disparities are so rampant, many have become desensitized to the entire situation. I think that it's important to remember that more so than race, economic status is a major issue. The sad thing is that if you're poor, a lot of fat cats (lilke Lott) ignore you and your situation; that is until the hurricane wiped out his million dollar home, then he became an advocate.

shinerbock 07-31-2006 10:16 PM

Yes, I can also read and interpret bull$#@^. Seriously, do you think racisim and classism are problems?

shinerbock 07-31-2006 10:52 PM

Dammit I can't keep up with this editing. I think racism is at times a problem, but theres also a lot we can't do about it. Everyone is free to think what they will. However, I wish we lived in a world where claims of racism were not thrown about like they currently are. Like sexual assault or harassment, false or irresponsible claims can often strip real claims of their legitimacy. As for classism, what do you mean. I think there are different classes of people, and I think people will always discriminate between them.
