Would you vote for a brother or sister no matter what?

Tip of the hat to AGDee and the Alpha Gamma Delta forum for this question...

If a brother or sister of your GLO was running for office, would you vote for that person even if their political views were completely different from your own? Would it make a difference if that person was someone you knew personally or not? (By knew personally, I mean someone who is/was in your college or alum chapter, or someone you interact with regularly, not someone you've met briefly or just heard speak at a convention or something)

My answer: I wouldn't vote for anyone, Brother or not, if I completely disagreed with his or her views...even if I knew them well. (sometimes especially if I knew them well!) If I was undecided between a Brother and another candidate, all else being fairly equal in my mind, of course I'd vote for the Brother.

No and no.

honeychile 11-10-2005 02:27 PM

I wouldn't vote for them in either case, but I'll admit to feeling some guilt about it.

Kevin 11-10-2005 03:55 PM

I've voted against a brother just once... but I did it because I liked the other brother that was running better :)

I did vote for Sen. Tom Coburn (EE, Oklahoma State) in the U.S. Senate election, so yes, you can direct all of your hate mail to me :D

I did think that Bob Anthony (DE, Oklahoma) was the better candidate. The 3rd guy in the Republican primary was a scumbag, and the Democratic challenger was Kerryesque -- voted and behaved one way in Oklahoma and another way in D.C.

SmartBlondeGPhB 11-10-2005 04:08 PM

NO, I wouldn't and I would feel no guilt about it. :D

sugar and spice 11-10-2005 05:03 PM

No, and anyone who would freaks me out.

AGDee 11-10-2005 05:06 PM

I wouldn't either, but I would still be happy if the sister won the election, for both her and the Fraternity. I'd like to be able to brag that we had a Governor, or President, etc.

Xylochick216 11-10-2005 05:27 PM

No way. If Condi runs for president, I can't bring myself to vote for her. I hear she's an amazing woman, but I don't think I could do it. It also depends on who she is running against. I'm set enough in my views that I won't be swayed to vote for someone I wouldn't normally.

texas*princess 11-10-2005 08:26 PM

No way.

It's one thing to post those "Vote for my XYZ sister who could win an all-expense paid trip to Iceland if she gets the most votes!!" and get everyone to vote b/c she's your sorority sister..

.. but it's quite another thing to vote for someone just because they are your sorority sisters when it comes to public office.

copacabana 11-10-2005 08:51 PM

No.
Obviously there is some relevence to them being a member of my GLO, and there are probably some values that we hold in common. But there's no way I would vote for someone just because she's a sister...I only vote for who I think is the best candidate for the job, period.

GeekyPenguin 11-10-2005 09:17 PM

This is taking your GLO affiliation way too far. I have sisters that I love dearly but I never want to see their name in a polling booth - and I know I have sisters who feel the same way about me.

sageofages 11-10-2005 10:05 PM

Entering a politically based discussion with a sister whose thinking is different than I is about as far as I go....

NutBrnHair 11-10-2005 10:10 PM

I usually vote Republican, BUT...

I will admit that after having met Rep. Pat Schroeder (D) from Colorado & Sen. Blanche Lambert Lincoln (D) from Arkansas at Chi Omega functions...I certainly would have considered voting for both of them. I was impressed.

Private I 11-11-2005 01:24 AM

NO. No guilt.

DeltAlum 11-12-2005 03:49 PM

No.

Tom Earp 11-12-2005 04:45 PM

As We Members of Different GLOs as well as Members in each, and there was a Brother running with totaly different ideals than Mine, a deffinate NO!

I had two Brothers who were in Kansas State Leg behind each other and I saw nothing that came from either one that did anyone any good.

Each wanted to place Election signs on the lawn of the House and I suggested a strong NO.

It is like having a Business and I will not place anyones campaign sign in My Window.

If there was a strong beleif in My Brother, not because He is My Brother I for one would Vote for Him!

a.e.B.O.T. 11-12-2005 04:48 PM

Well, i think the politians views can take them so far... if I know the brother to be of excellent character, I would feel much more comfortable voting for him, then the guy who has the same views as me

polarpi 11-13-2005 01:30 AM

No. :)

I don't vote strict party lines, and I wouldn't vote for someone just because they were a fellow sister. That's going a little too far, in my opinion.

I'll agree with that. Character is hard to fake if you know someone -- on the other hand, a candidate's views are normally about 90% based on polls (and as the prominence of the office increases, so does the % of the views tied to polls).

Extremely shameless self-bumping of an old thread - since this is an election year I thought it might be interesting to revisit this old thread. :)

preciousjeni 08-21-2008 01:02 AM

No way

pinksirfidel 08-21-2008 02:17 AM

Nope and nope! It's just plain irresponsible to think otherwise.

PhiGam 08-21-2008 05:32 AM

No way

ThetaPrincess24 08-21-2008 07:13 AM

No. But my dad has been guilty of voting for people running for office for no other reason than they were Sigma Chi.

Jimmy Choo 08-21-2008 07:36 AM

No!

Elizabeth Dole may be my sister but she won't be getting my vote!

I'd vote against my biological siblings if I disagreed with them enough (and I often do) ... so no, and no.

KSigkid 08-22-2008 10:39 AM

Nope.

ThetaDancer 08-22-2008 10:43 AM

Nope, and no guilt.

Drolefille 08-22-2008 03:01 PM

Nope, I've voted against them in student elections before.

My motto:
Just because they're family doesn't mean they're right or that I owe them. Even in sororities you don't get to pick everyone who you're related to.

SWTXBelle 08-22-2008 03:26 PM

Nope.

But if there were two candidates for a postion, equally qualified and no other differences other than one was a sister, and one was not - I'd vote for my sister. But how likely is that scenario to happen?
