Epidemic of white girls going missing . .

Have you noticed that only cute white girls seem to go missing in the united states? Whats up with that?

Every time I turn on the nightly talk shows all I see is a new white girl that is missing. Whether its from Aruba, or from a college, the common thread is that its a cute white girl . . .

Does that mean that all people from other cultural backgrounds are safe? Maybe white girls shouldn't leave their homes?

texas*princess 10-28-2005 07:49 AM

I highly doubt all other cultural backgrounds are safe... lots of women go missing everyday, but not all of them make the national news.

This is a joke, right?

That was my first thought as well...maybe to lead to a discussion of why other kidnappings/runaways aren't as well-known?

That has to be the reason for the topic, right?

I would say so. James is being Sergeant Sarcasm.

Agreed. Did any of you see that LT movie "Human Trafficking"? Did you notice the media hype that was portrayed of the white American girl that got snatched up in the Phillipines?

Just a little. :p Aren't you, James?

I think this thread was meant to point out that it's only the cute while girls who get kidnapped that make the news...the other ones don't get media attention, for whatever reason.

And by the way, James, can you account for your whereabouts when all of those young women disappeared?

Of course James was being sarcastic. That's his job.

Seriously though, it is an indictment of the media -- particularly calbe news channels -- that they prey on these stories of good looking middle to upper class white girls when there are so many missing people in the country from all races and economic backgrounds.

sugar and spice 10-28-2005 11:29 AM

The most recent semi-famous missing girl was African. However, her case would have never made national news if it wasn't for the fact that her boyfriend was in a band -- the info was passed around to his other friends in bands and dispersed to their fans via myspace and other online sources days before the mainstream media picked it up.

Optimist Prime 10-28-2005 02:14 PM

there was a black girl missing who was with some guy from the internet (she was 17 and not that attractive)

the story got almost no press, even here in Richmond.

If she had been pretty and white, they would have known about this in Canada.

I conclude that this country is still pretty racist.

TheEpitome1920 10-28-2005 02:26 PM

Speaking of missing white women...what happened to the young lady in Aruba?

I'd say she's fish food, unfortunately.

The Fox news guys cleared out because Aruba wasn't going to be as fun a place to live on the company dime during hurricane season?

-- I still maintain that the only reason they covered it the way they did was so that they could work on their tans.

Nah...they just found another story they could run into the ground twenty-four/seven.

I don't think it is only about race...but just about who they are selling news too.

People have much more sympathy for something that is pretty and cute than something...not so pretty and cut.

Everyone feels bad for a kitten that is killed, but who cares about a spider. Both are alive, both could be pets...but one is cute and the other ugly.

You could probably get a leash for one of those big scary ones

(Disclaimer - I know James was kidding)

:( It frustrates me to no end that the case below has not been solved. I truly hope our police Dept won't let this slip between the cracks. He wasn't missing for that long, but the outcome is horrible:

Murdered Teenager Laid To Rest

POSTED: 12:26 pm EDT October 7, 2005
UPDATED: 5:07 pm EDT October 7, 2005

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Mourners at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church Friday afternoon said goodbye to 16-year-old Gregory Goodson. He was found murdered last week in north Charlotte.

Some classmates recalled the thing they'd miss most about their bright, bubbly friend.

"His smile, that's the main thing," said one student.

"He always wore a smile on his face -- always. You could never see him looking sad," said another student.

"He never had any problems with anybody. I don't even know (why) somebody would do something to him like that. He just wasn't that that type of person," said another student. ...

I think this is one of the major points brought up by the topic ... the fact that the 'white' girls are seen as "cuter" than others - and even in the label white there seems to be a hierarchy of sorts.. ie. how many blondes get media attention compared to others?

RedRoseSAI 10-29-2005 08:44 AM

There was actually quite a bit of press about Olamide Adeyooye, a (black, female) Illinois State University student whose body they just found. Of course, she's cute and she's a co-ed, so I'm sure that helped contribute to the story's popularity:

That was the story I was referencing earlier. It was only picked up by the mainstream news after her friends and her boyfriend did their best to circulate the news of her disappearance through word-of-mouth and the internet.

TP2 - Do you know what the photos are? They look more like a little kid than a 16 year old? In any case, what a sad story.

honeychile 10-29-2005 02:42 PM

I think socio-economics have a lot to do with it, too. Compare the Ted Bundy killings to the Green River Killer's. Ted Bundy killed mostly college girls/good looking women, while the GRK killed mostly prostitutes. It took about 20 years to catch the GRK compared to only a couple for Ted Bundy (although we'll never know exactly when he started).

One is a pic of him when he was a little boy. The other one is the one that's been circulating on the news. Actually, he would have turned 17 this week. His family had a memorial for him. Sad.
