InTEResting vs Intresting

Which do you say? In-ter-esting or in-tresting?
For some reason I recently realized that i'm not saying it properly, and that bothers the hell of me. So i'm trying to work on fixing it.

I find that I say it both ways. I have a tendency to speak very quickly & when I do I say it "intresting." But if I slow down & take my time I end up saying "interesting." I'm not sure which way is "right," around here everyone says everything differently & probably wrong! :)

AKA2D '91 10-27-2005 08:38 AM

the latter

moe.ron 10-27-2005 09:31 AM

in-tresting

AlphaFrog 10-27-2005 09:37 AM

If I'm seriously saying something is interesting I say "in-tresting". If I'm being sarcastic I say "InTEResting" and more slowly.

honeychile 10-27-2005 09:42 AM

I say "interesting" - but I have problems saying "clasped", not "clap-sed". That's really bad, as "clasped hands" is all through everything that's ADPi!

Danielle, have you been watching Saturday Night Fever?

EEKappa 10-27-2005 09:48 AM

I think I do both. It's kind of like how I say "y'all" in more casual settings, but "you" or "you all" in business situations.

lol, no. I realized it when talking to an attorney yesterday.

Kevin 10-27-2005 10:16 AM

According to my voice and diction class, both uses are proper.

AGDee 10-27-2005 10:20 AM

The dictionary indicates that either is correct. (Was that I ther or E ther?)

KSig RC 10-27-2005 10:25 AM

I prefer EYE-nteresting

pinkiebell1001 10-27-2005 11:47 AM

i think i say it both ways, but i think i probably say inTEResting more

AUDeltaGam 10-27-2005 11:52 AM

I say In-ter-esting. But I also say the-ate-er, so what can I say? ;)

I am a the-a-ter major and its a running joke that the towners say the-ate-'r

Peaches-n-Cream 10-27-2005 01:51 PM

So which is the right way to pronounce interesting?

I guess few things are interesting to me because I can't remember the last time I said it.

irishpipes 10-27-2005 02:22 PM

I say in-ter-est-ing. I noticed along those same lines that when I moved to the southern midwest from Chicago, here people say INsurance and up North we said inSURance. Here they say UMbrella and up North we said umBRELLa.

WCUgirl 10-27-2005 02:38 PM

IN-ter-est-ing.

I think. Lol.

Another pronunciation that annoys me is cement (SEE-ment versus ce-MENT). That's mostly Southerners that do that though.

Or, oil: 'OL versus OY-el.

AchtungBaby80 10-27-2005 06:20 PM

I say "in-tresting," though many many people from the area where I was raised say it the other way. I always associate that pronunciation (in-ter-rest-ing) with the uneducated, which is unfortunate since I know that technically both are right.
