Movie: "G" The Great Gatsby- Urban Version

I loved TGG (book and movie) in HS. I haven't gone to the movies in a few minutes, so I'll probably check this out!

'G' is a contemporary African-American romance inspired by the classic F. Scott Fitzgerald story The Great Gatsby. Set amidst the grandeur of the ultra elite Hamptons, 'G' follows self-made millionaire and rap mogul Summer G (Richard T. Jones) on a journey to regain what he desires most – the love of his life (Chenoa Maxwell), now married to a wealthy and philandering Wallstreeter (Blair Underwood). Having built his thriving empire from the ground up, Summer G would relinquish it all for the promise of rekindling a romance with his one true love.

I definitely want to check this movie out. Richard T Jones is a favorite of mine, plus he's looking yummy in the previews.

Richard T. Jones. Umph. Umph. Umph.

Sistermadly 10-24-2005 03:33 PM

After seeing the trailer for this, I never would have pegged as an 'urban' spin on Gatsby. Interesting. If it plays here, I might actually go see it.

Maroon Hawk 10-25-2005 05:52 AM

^^^ I didn't know it was spin of The Great Gatsby either...but that's hot tho cuz TGG was a good book back when I read it back in HS (especially all the underlining symbolism, i.e. color references, etc.). Now I gotta see the movie.

Conskeeted7 10-25-2005 09:42 AM

I haven't even seen previews for this and it's supposed to be out this weekend?

Sounds like it would be very good! I loved the book.

AKA2D '91 10-25-2005 09:54 AM

You'll see the trailer...

Watch UPN! LOL

preciousjeni 10-25-2005 10:09 AM

Ooh! I'll see it!

FeeFee 10-25-2005 10:40 AM

I would like to go see this movie. It's good to see Blair Underwood in another movie, and Richard T. Jones is looking rather sessy. :)

I've never read TGG; maybe I'll go pick it up.

Glad it was sort of wider released

I can't wait for this. It will be playing in Los Angeles, which is the closest area to me. I'm going to go see it on Sunday.

onlyme 10-26-2005 12:00 PM

I definitely want to check this out.

Gyrl7 10-27-2005 09:12 AM

I think you will all enjoy the movie......I did....;)

Gina1201 10-27-2005 10:10 AM

I saw a commercial for this movie last night during ANTM but according to the website it's not coming to Syracuse. And I'm not going all the way to Albany to see a movie.

I wonder why it's not coming to Syracuse??? That's not right! Dang it's a good movie to, maybe it will come up that way later.

kiml122 10-27-2005 10:28 AM

Yes, I can't wait to see this movie. Richard T Jones is my man

jitterbug13 10-29-2005 12:43 AM

Just came from seeing the movie. It was ok, kind of predictable. Richard T. Jones was looking good though.:D I'll save future comments until more people have seen it.

It's here in Saginaw, but my money to go and see it won't be here until Friday. :o However, I will go and see it when I go out of town. :)

Conskeeted7 10-30-2005 10:49 AM

I don't have UPN and the trailers haven't been on any other channels I've seen.

It's playing here though, so I might check it out.

Thoughts (no spoilers)

I enjoyed G. Now don't get me wrong, Christopher Scott Cherot is no auteur, but it's a pretty good look at what happens when hip-hop meets socialite society.

Chenoa Maxwell seems to be a limited actress, but I think Blair and Richard T. Jones handled their roles pretty well. Andre Royo's voice grates -- it's lispish; we were wondering if he'd also had hearing problems. Jillian Lindsey (Daisy Duke) brought the comedy -- her character seemed to be a play on Kimberly Denise Jones, bka Lil' Kim. :p

Plus, the visuals are stunning. Being a West Coast person, I've never been to the Hamptons, and am curious as to their appeal of sorts.

I've also got to give a fashion take. Blair was rocking the Ralph Lauren lines very well (Andrew, Ralph Lifschitz' son, was the producer of this film).

Go see it. I feel bad for my S.D. friends and sorors, because the closest place it's playing to is Irvine.

ETA: I just learned it's playing in San Diego. The Web site doesn't indicate this.

Since she was tall and light skinned, she reminded more of Charli Baltmore. ST, you probably have her govt. name.:p :)

It actually is here in Syracuse, but it's not listed on the website. I found out when I went to see Saw 2. :)

WenD08 10-31-2005 05:47 PM

this place seems a bit more positive about the movie. i was reading reviews elsewhere (Soror Steeltrap, i'm sure you saw them) and folks DOGGED this movie. i'm hoping it's not bad. i loved The Great Gatsby book and movie and i don't want anyone to mess up the story.
as for the Hamptons, it's a lovely and very pricey area. the best part: the shopping:D seriously, if i had the money, i would love to have a home out there. it's that nice but i'm biased since i was born on the Island...

I was about to say, don't make me call Al Sharpton and start some mess up in Syracuse.....LOL

She is quite limited. From her lack of facial expressions down to the wooden reading of her lines.
My theory is that Chris Cherot gets Chenoa at a discount. She also "starred" in his first movie, "Hav Plenty."
