Wearing Paraphernalia On the Job
There have been threads on wearing para in public and purchasing/wearing inappropriate para...
Greeks, do you wear para (shirt, sweaer or jacket) to work? As a professional, in your line of work, is it appropriate? Is it ever inappropriate to wear para while working? |
I wear it all the time...
The temperature has dipped here in Tallahassee so it's cold in my office so I am wearing my Kappa Jacket. Ocassionally on Friday's I will wear a t-shirt with jeans since we can be casual on Fridays. You have to sorta get a feel for your work environment.

I don't see anything wrong with showing your affiliation at work, but follow dress code guidelines first. I have 2 stuffed elephants in my cube as well an elephant my nephew made for me in daycare. Later on I might add more but that's it for now for decoration. |
The most I've ever done was carry my AKA umbrella (which I have with me right now), or carry my AKA bags. I've yet to wear my jacket to work. It's getting cold, so that's not an issue for now, lol.

Yuppers....
Casual Friday; Polo t-shirt with jeans. I also carry my aka umbrella to work on a daily.
|
I work for the Fed Gov and it is pretty laid back here, but it also depends on what you do here too. I have worn my shirt and jacket and I have seen some of the other employees wear theirs. If I was a branch chief or division director, I probably would minimize it to a tote and umbrella.
|
I haven't. . .yet. However, I do have an elephant figurine on my desk, a pic of me and my back throwing up the 'mid in an elephant frame on my desk, and a drawing of a lady throwin up the 'mid on my bulletin board.
|
I work with toddlers so I choose not to wear any paraphermalia. The closest I come to wearing anything TNX realated is a lavender shirt. My co-workers don't even know I'm in a sorority
|
When I was working at the call center, I wore my polo shirt on causal days (usually Fridays and Saturdays). I also had my unbrella and Delta purse everyday. One of my co-workers wore her line jacket when she was cold or if it was cold outside.
What not to wear at work: I worked with a girl at the call center who was in ABC sorority. At the time, we did causal everyday since it was hot. She was a undergrad and a neo (bless her heart). This particular day at work, she came with her shirt (in the sorority's colors), the front was in big Greek letters, and the back had her line name and number (this was a printed shirt and not sewn in). She also had tight blue jeans. And remember the boots that look liked Air Force Ones? Well she had the boots in one of the sorority's colors and painted letters on the other color.:o  |
When I'm work I usually just carry my tote around and a DST umbrella. I always wear my DST chain around my neck:D

I wouldn't wear 'nalia to my present job. When teaching, I wore my lanyard and carried an occasional AKA tote bag. At another job, I wore a jacket once because I went to work right after attending a community service event.
|
lol. She said bulletin board. :D
|
I and several sorors that work in my company have desk items (pencil holder, magnets, picture frames, etc.). I also have two DST prints on my desk.
I wear a neck chain with my employee id and switch off between a Delta neckchain and one from my undergraduate institution. We don't generally WEAR para clothing. I have seen a jacket or two on some Greeks but thats it. |
On Fridays we can wear Paraphernalia. I mainly I think its because I teach at a high school and we try our best to make our students aware of things that are college related.
|
Really?
Your principal must be non-clear. :D I never looked at it like that. I'm at a HS too. My auxilliary girls know I'm greek and my co-workers, but... It's not something I've done. I like the idea of the greeks getting together to have a "greek day." I dunno if it will work here. LOL Last year, my principal (clear) didn't want a sub wearing his SU band windbreaker. Yet, when members of the faculty and staff wear their LSU gear, it's okay. I MAY break out my new AKA letter jacket Thursday morning or Friday morning since it is homecoming week. |
Since I work at a university and we are deep in my division, we all have small items in our office (i.e. snow globe, picture frame, cup holder, candy dish). We also wear our jackets on campus and on Fridays when we have lunch together. We had to scale it back when students were constantly stalking I mean stopping us asking when the chapter was coming back.

When I taught high school, my school bag was my red leather DST bag. Also at the Kappa Conclave in 2001, I bought a DST teacher shirt that said 2 teach is to change lives 4 ever There are Greek polo shirts that say, i.e. XYZ teacher XYZ lawyer XYZ doctor XYZ engineer XYZ principal XYZ Social Worker I never did buy one when I saw them at our conventions and at the Kappa Conclave. |
My mom had a lot of things on the desk in her office. I also remember several teachers at school that had identifying things around.
I've carried my umbrella and I have a mug at work. |

My job is not condusive to wearing Nalia. I have a small red votive candel with letters on it and a brass elephant on my desk. Every so often, depending on the situation, I may wear my colors, but that is it.

It is! I wonder if it would go over well here.
These so and sos are a trip. They'd say pay to wear my shirt/sweater/etc? I do it already. |

I wear my watch every day, and I often wear lavaliers (have a gold one and a sterling silver one).
But I don't wear my T-shirts or jackets, even on casual Fridays. I live during the week and work in a place that's overwhelmingly clear and don't need or want to explain what I do. |

Ditto. If I drive in, I will usually wear my crossing jacket (it's a great windbreaker and because of the colors, it makes me easier to see--I'm on a scooter) I have a coffee mug on my desk but thats it. |

Re: Wearing Paraphernalia On the Job
I'm an attorney so it's never appropriate for me to wear para. . However, I do have my "AKA" desk plaque on my desk.

We never get to wear p's here. I carry a Tau Beta Sigma tote bag, and my desk is decorated with turtles (notepads, a greeting card, turtle-shaped sticky notes).

I have a Zeta doll on my desk, and wear my tan windbreaker at times. On casual Fridays, I've worn my Zeta sweat suit (the nylon workout kind) and Zeta polo shirt. The workers know I'm a Zeta, the clients could care less.
But I love the idea of wear your org day!! |
My workplace is casual. I do on occasion wear a t-shirt and jeans, or if its cold (and it always is even during summer) I wear my jacket. On business casual days I dress up in my colors and put on a Sigma pin. I also have a Sigma messenger bag that I carry often and a keychain.
|
I teach high school, so we have a causual dress code for the most part. I wore my jacket today, I will do that but not a t-shirt because we can't.

At my firm, there are a few greekies but I'm the only one "out" |
It's amazing to read some of the responses here, especially at public schools. I guess I have it good cause I wear paraphernalia all the time and never really think about it. At my school, there are about 4 AKA's and I think at least 3 Deltas. As usual, I am the only SGRho so I gotta repRHOsent!! ;) My principal is a Kappa.
I have a key chain around my neck or somewhere on me EVERYDAY! I have a lunch box, a bag full of books, an umbrella on these many rainy days lately and on staff development days I usually wear a t-shirt. I never realized until posting this how much stuff I wear. :) |

On another note - I've worn one of my AKA shirts on the weekend when I was working "free" OT (former job). I've also seen others wear 'nalia to work (it's casual dress there). And when we were just having fun in meetings, I remember seeing this guy go down the soul train line - stepping and throwing up his sign (you know only a select few knew what was going on - but it was definately too cool/ cute!). |
