UofISigKap 10-22-2005 06:37 PM

You have a much better chance of that happening than I do of seeing a Sigma and Kappa...if it EVER got to either of those...well, WOW! That would be bad.

Excited????????? You're kidding, right?

You are talking about events that have the potential of KILLING people and destroying entire areas.

That's what I was thinking. It's an unusual thing to be excited about.

Very strange... a touch of gallows humor, perhaps? :D

Have you ever been evacuated because of a tropical storm or hurricane and made to wonder if you would return to find everything you own destroyed, or wondered if your home, friends, or family were possibly gone? It's nothing to be excited about.

I keep thinking throughout all these hurricanes - Has it always been this bad and I've just never cared before? Sending all the campers home for Arlene and Cindy, then being evacuated for Dennis changed everything - now every time I hear about a tropical storm or hurricane I get a sinking feeling in my stomach and can't move from the news.

I feel the same way. I think I've posted this before, but I'm definitely concerned with all the weird meterological stuff going on this year.

We have 2 category 5 hurricanes in less than a few weeks apart.. then came Wilma who became a category 5 practically overnight (when I went to bed one day it was a cat. 2, then the next morning on the 6 am news it was a 5), then we get the longest and most active hurricane season ever - so bad that they ran out of names... and a major devastating earthquake in Pakistan (ok, so i know earthquakes aren't that tied into the weather..but still)... I'm def. concerned :(

etahannah 10-23-2005 03:31 PM

i hope no one misunderstood me...

i think it is horrible!! we still have until the end of november before hurricane season is over.

i just thought it would be neat to be able to cut a big "delta" and a "gamma" out of the newspaper.

i think it is worse than before. i have always tried to pay attention to everything that is going on but it definately is more in the news and worse than ever...

the tsuanmi, all these hurricanes, the earthquake...so much devistation just in this last year....very sad

*doesnt dance for this*

This is an historic year for hurricanes. In the past, a "bad" year was one with 12-15 named storms. We're already at 22, and the season isn't officially over until November 1.

Hi, my name is sarcasm and I would like to be your friend.

Would it make everyone feel better if I put the eye roll in? Or just say that I want Hurrican Delta so I can cut it out and put it in my scrapbook?

Here is a bunch of eye roll smiles to make up for my first post.

According to the NOAA web site:

Contributed by Neal Dorst

The Atlantic hurricane season is officially from 1 June to 30 November. There is nothing magical in these dates, and hurricanes have occurred outside of these six months, but these dates were selected to encompass over 97% of tropical activity. The Atlantic basin shows a very peaked season from August through October, with 78% of the tropical storm days, 87% of the minor (Saffir-Simpson Scale categories 1 and 2 - see Subject D1) hurricane days, and 96% of the major (Saffir-Simpson categories 3, 4 and 5) hurricane days occurring then (Landsea 1993). Maximum activity is in early to mid September. Once in a few years there may be a tropical cyclone occurring "out of season" - primarily in May or December. (For more detailed information, see Subject G13 - "What is my chance of having a tropical storm or hurricane strike by each month?")

I was a meterology major for a year and always thought it was ironic that one of the US' leading hurricane scientists' name was Dr. Landsea.

I also thought that the former head of Occidental Petrolium, Armand Hammer was named after Arm and Hammer baking soda. Or vice versa. It really confused me as a child.

He was apparently named after the symbol, which was a communist symbol, but not the brand, which took the symbol later or something. I'm still confused.
