Store Snob???

I was just on an African-American Beauty Board and there are a few threads on there that are talking about being snobby about cetain things. They weren't talking about labels, per se, but about stores, stores and boutiques that they would shop in and some that they wouldn't dare step a foot in. For example, there are ladies that said they would never shop in Sears, JCPennys, Walmart (not even for household items), Target, and grocery stores that offer the option of packing your own grocery bags. They were going on and on about the boutiqes and luxury items that they love, $500+ purses etc.

So do any of you consider yourself store snobs? What about label snobs? What are you "snobby" about? For example some of the ladies said that they only eat at certain resteraunts, they only like certain types of gifts, coffee, etc.

I'm just asking because I was soooooooooooo surprised by some answers.

Tickled Pink 2 10-20-2005 09:55 AM

Not really a snob, but I know people who say they can find all of these great vintage items in Thrift stores - and I never find a thing . So, I don't go to them.

Also, I don't like Target - not that I'm too good to go there 'cause Wally's gets my $$ faithfully, but I don't like anything that they have.

As far as restaurants - if they don't look clean, have less than an A rating (and can't explain why) I walk out. One of my favorite restaurants got a really low rating one year. It was on the news. I asked the hostess what happened - 'cause family still wanted to go..- & she explained it was structural items that they were marked down for. On the other hand a bunch of us went to a Chinese restaurant during lunch @ work. They had a low score. I asked the waitress why & she got defensive. I ordered a coke and ate some nabs when I got back.

I'm not a store snob per se. I am not crazy about Walmart, but they happen to be only one of two stores that I can buy my deodorant in (Almay), and they are cheaper than Walgreens. Since I'm by myself, money does become a consideration.

Now don't sleep on Tarjay, particularly with the Isaac Mizrahi collection. Matter of fact, I'm heading there today to get some more sunglasses.;)

Yes, his collection is nice. I was eyeing a white skirt I saw yesterday on their website. I'm going to stop at Tarjay sometime this weekend.

I can neve find any vintage items at thrift stores either. However, there is this vintage website that has some really cute stuff. When I find it I will post it (if I am allowed to).

I feel ya on the restaurants, if it's not clean ...I'm not eating there! On the mb some lady stated that she will NOT eat at Red Lobster b/c it is a chain restaurant and not up to her standards.

I WILL NOT eat at Red Lobster either. It's not that I'm too good, it's just that they're not good. They have the worst seafood and they should be ashamed to sell that stuff. If it was cheep I still wouldn't eat there! But I did like the biscuits :D

WenD08 10-20-2005 04:33 PM

my name is WenD08, and i am a Store Snob:p

i went to the Waffle House for the first time this past Sunday and i was cringing the whole time. the place was dirty and the food wasn't good enough for me to overlook that fact.
i love Target, their home stuff is great. you'll see their stuff in my bathrooms and my bedroom. i like Target way better than Wal-mart. when i think of Wal-mart i think of stay at home soccer moms w/no style. their ads make it look unstylish, if you will, to me. i don't like to wear anything that looks/feels random. but i'm not too good for Ebay:D and if i could shop where Soror Steeltrap shops, i'd be a happy chick;)

ladylike 10-20-2005 05:18 PM

Ditto on Wal-Mart. I've tried shopping at various Wal-Marts around the city but I see country-fried, corn-pone, look like their momma and daddy could be related type people. I just can't do it. :o

I tend to be more of a label whore than a store snob. I just can't bring myself to buy generic brands. A friend and I went grocery shopping and he held the generic brand aspirin side by side with the name brand aspirin. He proceeded to read the ingredients aloud and they were exactly the same. I just couldn't bring myself to buy generic aspirin.

I think it comes from a childhood of being raised on Tussin (rather than Robitussin), Fruit Circles (rather than Fruit Loops) and O's (rather than Cheerios). I'm scarred for life. :( :o :D

hijack/ Speaking of Wal-Mart ads - will someone please, please tell me what's up with their ad in the latest issue of Essence with the pic of D3 @ the top (pg 125)? Michelle has her arm around Beyonce' like she's her man, and it looks like Kelly is palming Beyonce's behind (if it's hip - it's too close). Look at it when you get the chance. I was like  , but maybe it's just me.

No - I don't do Wally for clothes, but we have grocery stores in the ones here.

[other store snobs] Hi WenD08! :p

Yes, I too am a store snob.

YES:
Macys, Neiman Mark Up, Nordstroms, Lohmans, Bloomies, cute and original boutiques, designer outlets, DSW shoes

NO
Sears, Target, Walmart or any store with a "MART" in the name, Mervyns, JC Penny, Ross, Marshalls.

The Gap, Banana Republic, Old Navy (all owned by GAP)

I'm sure I missed a few but these are the main ones

I also dont do food chains. I prefer mom and pop places with personality and I also prefer to support small business'.

I like the biscuits, too. :D And you're right, there seafood isn't that great. They do have good chicken though. :p

DC_Zeta1920 10-21-2005 07:03 PM

My name is DC_Zeta1920 and I am a store snob

YES: Express, Gap, Banana Republic, BeBe, Limited, Nordstrom, Macy's, Nine West, Steve Madden, Vickies, Target, MAC, Tiffany & Company, Guess, Arden B.

NO: K-Mart, JCPenney, Sears (appliances yes), Old Navy (once upon a time a yes, but I've grown to hate it), Sephora, Bakers, and those little rinky dink fashion stores like Rave, Rainbow, Fashion Cents, etc.....

There is no Wal-Mart near me sooooo I can't call it. Also, I think some of my choices can be classified as "label whorish"

sosinceredst 10-21-2005 07:32 PM

This is an interesing topic

The older I get (and I'm really not that old) the more I become a "store snob". But I really like the quality. I pretty much buy all my clothes at Neiman Marcus or Bergdorf Goodman(on sale and clearance) as well as Nordstroms and Macy's. I think it's because of my build. I am tall and thin and a lot of clothes in the cheaper stores don't fit me as well. I also find that classic items don't go out of style and I tend to use them longer. For example I bought simple jewelry from Tiffany's and a Louis Vuitton bag and they both take me everywhere I want to go. I find that I don't buy as much. I would buy a cheaper purse every month, but when I buy one quality classic purse I can pretty much wear it everywhere.

I also hate Red Lobster and the Olive Garden (even though I used to work there) b/c they're so generic and I don't like Red Lobster's food at all. I also like the little independently owned resturants. I think the food and service is generally much better.

luminarysoul 10-21-2005 09:04 PM

I dont think I am.
The only way I will stay away from a certain brand or store chain is if I have heard something about the chain that does not sit well with me.
other then that...
If i see something and I like it no mater what store window its in I will go in and buy it.
If I am in Walmart buying Tide and I see some pj's that are cute...im buying them

Beanblossom1 10-21-2005 09:57 PM

I'm lol about the Red Lobster comments. I went there once and ordered a salad - they brought me a side salad to eat with the dinner salad. :D At least the bisquits were good.

I think I'm a store snob, but its because I like quality and certain brands tend to fit me better than others. I buy most of my clothes at Ann Taylor and Harolds, but its because their styles and sizes fit me right. Its nice to be able to walk into a store or order something online and know the exact size. I have a hard time in dept stores because their clothes don't fit me as well - tend to be in-between sizes - however they usually have clothes that catch my eye. I tend to buy my 'play t-shirts' at Target - inexpensive and trendy. And I agree whole-heartedly with the poster than talked about quality items last longer.

I agree with the poster that said Sears for appliances. I actually bought a w&d last week from them. They called and told me there was a cosmetic scratch on it and they were sending me a $40 gift certificate. I started thinking - what on earth am I going to get - maybe I need another appliance?? Don't ask me why, but I think it cheapened Lands End when they merged with Sears. OK - that comment just deemed me a store snob. ;)

Soror, I could have wrote this. I LOATHE the Waffle House. It's sooooooo dirty!

Conskeeted7 10-22-2005 12:24 AM

Count me as one of the people who doesn't like the Waffle House. When the first one opened around here, they were pretty nice. Then they just got filthy all of a sudden. I can't eat in those conditions.

I can't shop at TJMaxx, Value City, Marshalls or any other store where it's acceptable to throw items on the floor and leave them in piles all over the place. I just can't get over the presentation of the merchandise at these stores. I'm not digging through all of this mess, even if there is a $9 blouse in there somewhere.

Grocery stores that make you bring or buy bags should be burned to the ground. My first and last visit to one of these occured when I saw that the food is just sitting in the cardboard boxes its shipped in. This is just the ultimate in lazy to me. You want me to buy this stuff, right? Things just look grimey there. Yuk!

I like Walmart for household items, but sometimes I just don't feel like going in that big of a store.

NUPE4LIFE 10-22-2005 11:16 AM

Ok I will be the one and only man to post in this thread. I'm not a "store snob" but I have a rule. Once a cologne or perfume is available in a drugstore or Wal-mart, I will not wear it.

thats funny cuz i was in walmart the other day and i saw that they were selling White Diamonds, and i rememeber when that used to be Errrrybody's fave scent.

i am not a snob to most stores but there are some that I will turn my nose up to like it's okay to have a few pieces from old navy (they can have some cute sweaters!!:D ) but if every item you own is from there, thats a problem...

also when i was in high school, these particular brands were a no no (at least where i was from) and now that im older, i see a lot of people rockin them, and im like oh HELL naw!!!
FILA or Reebok sneakers
FILA anything
FUBU
colored timbs:rolleyes:
thats just my two cents!

NUPE4LIFE 10-23-2005 12:38 AM

LOL @ White Diamonds! I remember when my aunt got a White Diamonds gift set one Christmas and she was so happy. White Diamonds and Passion (Don't forget Passion for men). I remember those days.

Conskeeted7 10-23-2005 02:24 AM

They sell a lot more recent perfumes and colognes at the drug store than they used to. I saw Curve, Nautica, Britney Spears, JLo, Kenneth Cole and a few other good ones this past week.

onlyme 10-23-2005 09:05 AM

Speaking of perfumes, Ashanti has a scent out and it is only available at Walmart. I couldn't believe it, because Beyonce's and JL's perfumes are in department stores. That is just another sign that Ashanti is not on the same level.

Store Snobs? LOL

I.LOVE.IT! :D

NO: It's Fashion....um, no, it's not!
KMART: It's DUSTY! Fashion Cents/Rainbow/Piggly Wiggly, (mom and pop store) Hi Nabor/Sears/JC Penney/Cato/Shoe Carnival/Shoe Depot/Payless/

WalMart's bathrooms are always filthy. I just make sure my bladder is empty before I get there.

skeeliteful 10-24-2005 03:24 PM

I think I'm a store snob and a label snob. I drive right by the Walmart that's on the corner from my house to go to Target. I haven't stepped foot in a Sears or JC Penney's in years. In college Lerner's/New York & Co and Old Navy were my joints but the quality has gone down to me. Plust Old Navy's clothes seem to target a much younger generation.

The stores that I frequent are Banana Republic, Limited, Nordtrom's, Nine West, Enzo Angiolini, Anthropology, White House/Black Market, and Burdines-Macy's (just to name a few ;) ).

Now...I do go to Ross and TJ Maxx but only for their shoes and handbags and I have walked out with some bargains on name brand things. I can't look through the racks because I feel like I'm at a swap meet or flea market.

Re: Store Snob???

For the most part, I like to *keep* my money so I am not really into the designer stuff b/c I just don't see how it is much better than other non-designer stuff in many instances (however, I do have a couple of coach purses that I bought in 2000). However, I am a snob when it comes to hotels (won't stay in anything with an "Inn" in its name) and when it comes to spas (I prefer the real spas, not the nail salons - I prefer the spas with the resorts attached best). My snobbiness is mostly about quality not about wanting to pay a bunch to feel like I have gotten something worth having.

Sexy Mocha 10-25-2005 09:06 PM

My name is Mocha and I am a Lowered Expectation Shopper

I shop at Payless, PayHalf (Think Payless for clothes), and DANICE (local $10 store)

I look forward to dining at the Waffle House, Hardees, and Dairy Queen

AND ...I buy all of my perfumes for 99 cents. My brand of choice: Jordache. I buy a variety of imitation scents:

"Dolce & Gabana"
"Escape"
"Cool Water" (For Women)

No fancy schmancy stores for me http://www.handykult.de/plaudersmilies.de//nono.gif

9dstpm 10-25-2005 09:45 PM

I'm 9dstpm and I too am a Lowered Expectations Shopper. This is due to my single paycheck status. I have Store Snob tendencies. If I had the cash, you will find me at Marshall Fields, Macy's, Coach, etc. I'll gladly shop at Payless for my shoes but I CANNOT shop at Value City, Rainbow, TJ Maxx, AJ Wright, ANY store that looks like a garage sale. I cannot shop in disarray. I must feel peace and harmony when I shop.

I will shop at Wal-Mart for everything else but I hate their clothes for plus size women. They are so dowdy and old. I may have some curves and such but I wanna look stylish too. That's why I shop at Avenue. Lane Bryant is a little too bo-ho for my taste, but their underwear and lingerie is really nice.

I'm starting to like Tarjay (Target) for clothes and accessories but I LOOOOVE their sheets and comforters. I heart this purple sheet set/comforter/duvet cover and I MUST have it!!

I agree with Nupe4Life about not wearing cologne/perfume from discount stores. No way. I used to work at Wally World and my sister used to work to K-Mart and we know that when those scents hit the stores, they are watered down by the companies so that they can sell more of them at a cheaper price. I will buy my good perfumes from Marshall Fields or Vickie's Secret (Happy, Happy Heart, and Dream Angels Heavenly).

Tickled Pink 2 10-25-2005 11:10 PM

I do Payless mainly for sandals and flip flops. Evry now & then they'll have a cute pair of dress shoes, but it's rare. I like 9 West for my dress shoes.

Steeltrap 10-26-2005 11:35 AM

I generally steer clear of Payless, despite the fact that Soror Starlet Marie Jones Reynolds is a spokesperson. Their shoes, to me, seem to lack quality.

Then again, I'm single and only responsible for myself, so I do have some degree of disposable income. I could feel differently if I was married with children.

AKA2D '91 10-26-2005 11:40 AM

IMO, the store smells. When I've gone in there with friends, my eyes would burn.

Soror ST, I think if I was hitched with a bambino/a, I'd still pass on Payless. I've been told that I will be on a buy one pair of shoes/month.  (say what??? YMBOC is what I said to myself) So, I'd have to make it count! Whenever that time comes...if it comes. :D ;)

Hi Everyone! I am store snob too..:p

I loathe Thrift stores! They smell funny, the clothes look horribly out of style, and its not organized to me.

I hate stores where I have to piece outfits together like i found a skirt but now I have to look all over for a matching top or vice versa...such as Value-City, Aj Wright, Tj Maxx, Walmart, Filene's Basement...etc.

However, I will buy my shoes at discount stores, except PAYLESS. Their shoes hurt my feet:(

Im not really into a lot of trendy clothes that look cheap. (DEBS, DOTS things like that)

Department stores are nice and I like G.A.P, New York and Company, Limited, Express

AKA2D '91 10-26-2005 11:58 AM

*BINGO* :D

onlyme 10-29-2005 11:15 PM

I guess I should answer my own question, huh?

Well, I'm not a store snob per se but I don't shop for clothes at Rainbow, Walmart, or any stores like that. I mostly get household items there. I don't do thrift stores although I do hear that you can luck up depending on the location of the shop.

I love Arden B, White House-Black Market, Express (love their jeans) and boutiques. I do shop at Macy's and department stores because they have cute clothes. I'm starting to like Target for cute sleepwear and slippers and they have cute accesories, too.

For shoes I shop at Aldo, Macy's, Nine West, and DSW for summer shoes.

I'm starting to get into shopping online for unique and vintage clothes and accessories. I'm just a little nervous about sizing and returning items that don't fit.

I like some of Ashley Stewart's clothes. Also, there is a plus sized store here named Torrid. I walked through there - some of the clothes were a bit risque, but some were ok. Wally's is out of the question for clothes.

Clinique Happy is sold at Walmart and Walgreens around here.

My stores for clothing no no's are Walmart, Rainbow, Rave, or any store that sells cheap and frumpy looking items. Some of these stores may carry loud big cheap printed shirts and dresses for $50 or more and I think I can do better catching a department store sale. My friend and I argue all the time because she thinks Foley's or Nordstrom's is too expensive. I tell her she spends the same amount on cheap, trendy, (soon to be out of style in 3 months) items.

Bakers and Payless are a hit or miss for me. It just depends on what I am looking for. I love Target for the solid color clothing basics. I agree the quality of Lerner's/New York & Co and Old Navy has gone down.

I tend to check Ebay first for items I missed in the store or items that seem to be rediculously priced that I must have. I have lucked up on brand new up to date Victoria's Secret and Banana Republic items.

I like Marshalls, Ross, Saks Fifth Off, and TJ Maxx, but I will not buy if there are several offerings of the exact same item. I really have to pay attention to the shoes. Some of the designer shoes have the rubber glued on soles or a lesser quality material. I will take the shoes the shoe hospital if I have any trouble.
