Oldest chapter in continual operation

What chapter in your group has never shut down, DU's oldest chapter in continual operation is at Hamilton College in New York, founded in 1847 this group is 159 years old- never once inactive. The university taking over fraternity houses has not stopped this group, 50-60 members every year going strong.

Think about it how many voluntary associations have lasted 150 + years Greeks do something right.

KSUViolet06 10-16-2005 02:34 PM

Our oldest continuously active chapter is Alpha @ Longwood. :)

ZZ-kai- 10-16-2005 02:35 PM

Longest of them all!

Gamma Chapter of Beta Theta Pi:

Founded: June 1, 1842

The Gamma chapter of Beta Theta Pi at Washington & Jefferson College proudly upholds the traditions of our organization and chapter, as have our brothers over the last 160 years. Gamma chapter carries the prestige of being the oldest fraternity established on W&J’s campus as well as the longest fraternity chapter in continuous existence of any fraternity in the world.

Jill1228 10-16-2005 02:54 PM

I would say our Alpha Chapter at Syracuse

irishpipes 10-16-2005 03:08 PM

Omicron chapter at University of Tennessee - Knoxville. (1902)

ETA: Despite its chapter designation, Omicron is the 3rd chartered chapter of AOII. Alpha At Barnard/Columbia and Pi at Sophie Newcomb/Tulane preceded it. AOII allows the chapters to select their own names - we don't just start with Alpha and then Beta, Gamma, Delta, etc.

KSigkid 10-16-2005 03:18 PM

As far as I know, our University of Virginia Zeta (first) chapter has been continuously running since the fraternity's founding in 1869.

DeltAlum 10-16-2005 03:32 PM

I'm proud to be a member of Beta Chapter of Delta Tau Delta at Ohio University, which was founded in 1862 and is our oldest continuously operating chapter.

ihearttrisigma 10-16-2005 03:59 PM

I can never beat Jocelyns fast fingers!;)

Long live Alpha!

ISUKappa 10-16-2005 04:05 PM

Delta - Indiana University, 1872 -- only 2 years after our founding.

ETA: corrected by a sister, I was thinking of something else. :)

AUDeltaGam 10-16-2005 04:19 PM

Eta- University of Akron, since 1879!

SmartBlondeGPhB 10-16-2005 04:41 PM

Alpha at Syracuse

Janerz222 10-16-2005 04:51 PM

for Kappa Alpha Theta, it's our Alpha Chapter at DePauw (formerly known as Indiana Asbury), founded in January of 1870 and still going strong.

AXi1257 10-16-2005 07:07 PM

DITTO... i was so excited to post that, but you both beat me too it...

Go beta

trojangal 10-16-2005 07:40 PM

Kappa Delta's longest continuing chapter is the Zeta chapter at the University of Alabama.

100 years plus!!

g41965 10-16-2005 07:42 PM

Hat off to the Beta's

DU and Beta long expanded to the same parts of the country, Beta is a an old line group, it doesn't suprise me that the oldest chapter is a a Beta group.
The 150 year history of DU reports that in the late 19th century Beta and DKE were considered to be the strongest competitors to DU, Beta in the midwest and Deke in New England.
One of the reasons DU expanded in the late 19th century was to
keep up with larger groups like Beta, Fiji and Phi Delt.

queequek 10-16-2005 07:56 PM

For Theta Delts, Kappa Charge (Tufts University in Medford, MA) is the longest Charge in continuos existance, since its founding in 1856.

Kappa Charge

33girl 10-16-2005 09:02 PM

ASA's is Alpha Beta at Truman State.

aggieAXO 10-16-2005 09:12 PM

AXO's oldest chapter in continuous operation would be the Alpha chapter at DePauw. Est 1885

MReed1081 10-16-2005 09:34 PM

Alpha Phi's oldest chapter is our Alpha Chapter at Syracuse, founded in 1872. Most of our original chapters are still in existence.

IvySpice 10-17-2005 11:04 AM

Harvard's chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, Alpha of Massachusetts, was chartered in 1779. It merged with the Radcliffe chapter in 1995 and is now known as Alpha Iota of Massachusetts.

It is the oldest continuously operating chapter of any Greek-letter group. I'm very proud to be a member. :)

honeychile 10-17-2005 11:18 AM

Delta Chapter - University of Texas (1906)

(Alpha, Beta & Gamma chapters were all on campuses where there is no longer a Greek system)

ETA year.

Angels&Arrows 10-17-2005 11:58 AM

Illinois Alpha: On April 28, 1867, at Monmouth College!

FSUZeta 10-17-2005 02:20 PM

i would guess that our oldest continuous chapter is epsilon chapter at the university of arkansas.

in order to be eligible for membership in the intersorority conference(now npc) sororities could only have chapters in institutions of full college or university rank. since our alpha chapter was founded at what was then a teachers college, zta had to relinquish alpha chapter.in 1909, zta became the 13th member of the intersorority conference. happily, in 1949 zta was able to reactivate alpha chapter.

beta, gamma and delta chapters were all founded at women's
colleges, which no longer allow sororities.

Now to go look around for my ribbons. :D

dakareng 10-17-2005 11:02 PM

Our oldest chapter, Illinois Alpha (Monmouth) was founded in 1867 but because the college banned fraternities, the chapter was closed in 1878 but was rechartered in1928. Our oldest chapter in continuous existance is our fourth chapter, Indiana Alpha, founded at Asbury University (now DePauw) in 1870.

PhoenixAzul 10-17-2005 11:50 PM

I believe the oldest continually running chapter at Otterbein is Sigma Alpha Tau (Owls) 1910 and for the men....maybe Pi Kappa Phi (Country Club) 1908 (could be wrong about that as I'm not a member of either). Most chapters here have had at least 1 refounding/rebirth though.

Coramoor 10-18-2005 12:43 PM

Beta at WVU isn't the oldest chapter, but it is the oldest in continuous existence here. Almost 106 yrs.

What Boston do you mean? BU closed all their chapters for about 20 years, and I didn't think that BC had Greek life.

BetteDavisEyes 10-18-2005 02:41 PM

Boston University but I'll have to check to see if this is the chapter that's never been closed. I thought it was but now I'll do some in-depth digging to make sure. Thanks!

They have these other GLO's chapters on campus as well.

I'm pretty sure our Delta Chapter was closed for a while. I think our Zeta Chapter at George Washington University is our longest continuously open chapter. They were chartered in 1906.

BetteDavisEyes 10-18-2005 02:49 PM

Thanks! :) I honestly thought it was Delta but it looks like I was wrong.

Tom Earp 10-18-2005 04:24 PM

B U. did close out all Greeks.

LXA Founded there in 1909.

Looks like, and I might be wrong, they reopened to Greeks in 1970.

banditone 05-10-2007 10:25 AM

I'm bored at work and found this.

Sigma Nu's oldest continuing would be Beta at U. of Virginia (1871). Alpha was at VMI.

As a side note, I visited Kansas chapter (Nu 1884) back when I was in college. I was soooooo blown away when I walked into the formal dining area and the walls were all lined with Composites going back to the 1800's. Just wow..... (Hope they get their charter back soon :( )

azureblue 05-10-2007 10:38 AM

Good news, Banditone. It looks like they are on their way!

Holy Crap! Thanks Azure. I usually keep up with all that stuff, but had not heard a thing about when they would start a comeback.

Wow, that's from Today. And they are taking the house back from Alpha Gamma Delta, who was probably in it for less then 2 years. Yipes, I bet they hardly had time to unpack.

Rock Chalk Jayhawk, Go KU

LaneSig 05-10-2007 01:03 PM

Sigma Chi's oldest continous chapter is Lambda, University of Indiana, est. 1858. It was the 6th charter issued.

And, for those who notice, no, Lambda is not the 6th letter (it's the 11th). Sigma Chi skipped every other greek letter when establishing their charters. Their big rival at Miami was Beta Theta Pi and our founders did not want a chapter with "Beta" as its designation. After chartering the Psi chapter, Sigma Chi went back and filled in the rest of the letters.
