Are you a child of the 80s? Prove it!

In this thread we reflect on the great 1980s - the ties that bind all of us who grew up then.

Cartoons were only on Saturday mornings.

Mtv played videos

I had a bright green Trapper Keeper

My first Nikes were in 6th grade. White canvas with a light blue swish.

A pay phone call cost 20 cents, but if you put in a quarter, you wouldn't get change.

We were one of the first neighborhoods in my town to get cable tv.

ms_gwyn 10-12-2005 03:36 PM

I watched the launch of MTV

I remember Madonna's first single

Three words - Flock of Seguals

Lindz928 10-12-2005 03:39 PM

I always wanted the white keds sneakers, and was always sad that my mom would buy me the "generic" ones. They looked exactly the same, but didn't have the little blue tag on the back. Sad. :(

Kids Incorporated!!!

Slap bracelets :) .... Then seeing them get banned in school. :(

ET

Scrunchies

Rudey 10-12-2005 03:42 PM

You were all 7 years old in the 80s and watched a couple cartoons and a tv show or two like the A-Team.

Stop sending out these chainmails and constantly talking about the 80s like you were snorting coke in the China Club.

yeah Rudey you stupid doh doh head.

ETA: And besides, I was doin coke off of Drew Barrymores stomach when I was 3

Sister Havana 10-12-2005 04:13 PM

Pac-Man was HUGE.

I remember the early days of MTV. Nina Blackwood, Martha Quinn, Alan Hunter, J.J. Jackson (RIP) and Mark Goodman were the original VJs and they became almost as famous as the artists they played on the air.

33girl 10-12-2005 04:18 PM

(For Pittsburghers only)

Putting up with O'Brien and Garry and their crappy ass attempts at humor just because they played VIDEOS on their show.

You don't understand why everyone disses the Dick Ebersol-produced Saturday Night Live because you thought it was damn funny.

EEKappa 10-12-2005 04:55 PM

My pledge class (yes pledge class) went to go see Purple Rain together.

In my composite photo, I was wearing an add-a-bead necklace.

We were all psyched when Men Without Hats played at our Halloween Ball.

ZZ-kai- 10-12-2005 04:59 PM

H-street boards, Tracker trucks, slime-ball wheels, rat-tails, shelves in the side of your head, smurphs, Ken Griffey Jr. rookie cards, parachute pants, knee-high fold up Converse, Max Headroom and ADIDAS stood for 'all day I dream about skating.'

ZTAngel 10-12-2005 05:06 PM

My co-worker and I were just talking about trapper keepers about an hour ago. We were talking about how cool they were and what designs we had on our's.

EtaPhiZTA 10-12-2005 05:08 PM

Walking shorts and Izod shirts with the collars up, huge hair sprayed with about half a can of Aqua Net - those bangs weren't moving  , bermuda bags with interchangable monogrammed covers.

Not missing much about the 80s except the music :)

emleepc 10-12-2005 05:09 PM

You can't do that on Television

Jams were you favorite article of clothing, and all the better if you had them in every color of neon available.

Legwarmers

Stirrup pants

Side ponytails

Punky Brewster

High top Reeboks (with the 2 velcro straps at the top)

layered scrunch socks---always in outfit-coordinating colors

Where I come from, the S stood for something else.

I still have my She-Ra Princess of Power Crystal Kingdom castle.

God Bless He-Man on DVD, yo.

Whoa...Men Without Hits...er, Hats played at your Halloween dance???? I'm jealous! Hell, I'd think it was awesome if they'd played at some of our dances now.:p

And I know you all can't forget Smurfberry Crunch. I was soooooo mad when they quit making it!

Unregistered- 10-12-2005 05:32 PM

I totally forgot something else...

You thought you were cool because you emulated Debbie Gibson and Tiffany. You even wore big earrings and wore your hair like them. You got excited when their new tape came out because now you could play it on your WALKMAN.

"the claw"

Back then my hair wouldn't do that and I was devastated. I also was incapable of wearing a banana clip. Now I am so thankful because there are no incriminating pictures. (Except for those in my neon outfit. )

ETA: I went to Europe when I was 15, and in Switzerland, Swatches were only about $5 so I bought 4 or 5 (and wore them at the same time!!)

Rudey, Rudey, Rudey, why are you so angry?

We're just having a little fun here. And by the way, I was 7 in 1976, but no, I have never snorted coke at the China Club, or anywhere else. That's why I can remember the 80s.

ETA: One of my favorite movies from the 80s is "Rudy" but it isn't about you. :)

valkyrie 10-12-2005 10:05 PM

Those "clown suit" outfits (don't know what else they were called) that was made of a very floral print, all one piece, and had bands at the sleeves and at the ankles of the legs, but then was baggy everywhere else. Looked like a clown suit. Wear em' with flats and you were dressed up for school. (That might have been late 80's/very early 90's though).

Pogo Ball. LOVED IT!!

KatieKate1244 10-13-2005 03:45 AM

The ORIGNINAL My Little Ponies and Care Bears. I still have 30 ponies left, and I can't give them up.

That, and everything had a "splattered paint" effect. I remember this one dress I have (I actually think I wore it to my Kindergarten graduation) that was acid washed denim with paint splatters.

That, and tons of cheesy pre-teen books that all deal with the outcast kid suddenly understood by the rest of her school while remaining with her outcast friends. I swear I read about 10 books that all had that theme.

lifesaver 10-13-2005 04:28 AM

Paul Revere by the Beastie Boys...

The cool thing to do was the 'tight roll' of the jeans. Ya folded them over and rolled your jeans up.

I wanted to be Michael J. Fox in Back to the Future. I thought he was so cool.

irishpipes 10-13-2005 10:27 AM

This thread is smurfy!

My mom had a Plymouth station wagon. It was dark green with wood panels.

A good slumber party was one where the hosting household had a VCR - and it was Beta, not VHS.

Radiant_One 10-13-2005 11:11 AM

I had and still have a series of "latin freestyle" records such as:

LOLZ! That cheesy-ass soul stuff is probably the only thing I like from the 80s. 99% of everything -- music, fashion, tv, etc. from the 80s was horrible.

We called those rompers. Boy, were they stylin' around here! I have a picture of me and my two older sisters at my dance recital, and they're wearing those hideous things...with their Sam & Libby flats, of course.

I was also a HUGE fan of Stacy Q & her hit song "Two of Hearts" :p

AChiOAlumna 10-13-2005 02:35 PM

I remember during the early 80's:

Velcro purses...

Roach clips as hair accessories...

Jelly shoes...

Jelly purses and tote bags...

Vans sneakers were extremely popular...

Dove/Dolphin two-toned shorts that were banned from schools because they were too short (the were track shorts if I remember correctly)...

Farrah Fawcett hair was in...

The Tuxedo look for girls was in...

Bubble gum shaped like cigarettes that would "smoke" when you blew on one end of the gum (it was powdered gum)...

In the mid 80's, I remember...

Leg warmers....

Sweater vests...

Blue eye shadow...

In the late 80's, I remember...

Long permed hair...

Long permed hair with Sun-In....

*I owned the original "Skip It".

*I had Atari with Qbert, Pac Man, and Pong.

*I owned a purple Trapper Keeper.
