Indiana University of PA Cheerleaders suspended due to hazing?
I tried to find the story online - I heard it on the news tonite...
Anyone else hear it? |
It's in the Trash, I mean the Trib.
http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/trib.../s_383042.html I had to laugh at the girl saying "of course it involved alcohol." |
Give me a B
B Give me an E E Give me another E E Give me an R R What's it spell? Deep Doo Doo |
I have long advocated that we meet this imposter on the field and court, head to head, in football, basketball, and soccer.
The loser has to change its name. PS: I suspect all of these ladies have lawyers, and will benefit from it. Chapters in trouble should get lawyers quickly too. |
You know it took me a little while to understand what you ment by 'Imposter'... lol...
Be nice... its my 'maybe soon to be' grad school :) Sheila, I mean really... alcohol?! Could we expect anything else from IUP? NOTHING beats when my sister was at an IUP/Clarion game, and you know the flags that they have at IUP? The big I, U and P flags? Well someone (prob the cheerleaders themselves) put the P flag upside down and they ran them on IUP's side... so Clarion got to see... d U I ha. |
I thought they would be too busy drinking and partying to haze at IUP. :o

More on the hazing, and also discusses the death of a Theta Chi pledge on Sept. 30. |
I thought Theta Chi was gone from there ages ago? Or maybe I'm thinking of Crows.
And are there similar cheerleader "initiations" elsewhere? I mean, you have to try out, that should be enough. However I could easily drink a gallon of milk in an hour (as long as it's whole milk). |
The Varsity Cheers at our kids high school, who generally ranked first in the state in competitions and went to the national competitions at Disney World most years, got in trouble for underage drinking.
Daughter number two was a JV that year, and I'm pretty sure she went to a few beer parties with her older friends -- but couldn't prove it at the time. I know for certain that there was hazing, but I don't know that alcohol was involved in that per se. |
OK, I just read in the Penn about that Theta Chi pledge's death. He committed suicide. He hanged himself. Are they saying that because he drank at a mixer, he hanged himself? You've got to be kidding me.

No, that is not meant to be a really bad pun about someone hanging himself. |
Suspended until May:

You know what? If I were in charge of that school, I would just kick all the instigators off the squad and hold tryouts for new girls. Granted, there is enough talent at this school that I don't think the cheerleading quality would suffer (after the initial problem of having to learn routines quickly, etc.) . . . that may not be the case at a smaller school.

There are around 12,000 students there. I think they could find enough to fill a new squad.

IUP Cheerling Squad Suspended For Rest Of Year
Oct 13, 2005 9:28 pm US/Eastern Indiana, Pa. (KDKA) The IUP cheerleading squad has been suspended from performing until May 2006. IUP officials today released a statement, saying the group will be barred from “cheering at intercollegiate athletic events, participating in cheerleading expositions and representing themselves in uniform” at games or university-sponsored events. The suspension comes after the team's fall initiation party when a freshmen cheerleader was reported to be visibly intoxicated. “We tightened them and we let students know we were very serious about this,” said Michelle Fryling, IUP media relations. The team also cannot use school facilities or receive university benefits during the suspension. The squad cannot get their privileges restored until it develops a plan that includes member expectations and behaviors and new member recruitment education, according to the statement. “I can’t speak to why the instances are. I won’t speak to the allegations and the charges,” Fryling said. “We take a very hard look at students who are engaged in unsafe and illegal behaviors. Underage drinking is illegal and we can’t tolerate it” The cheerleaders have been suspended since October 2. A freshman member of the squad was charged with underage drinking after she returned to her dorm room intoxicated following the school’s annual initiation party. “I think it’s kind of unfair because not the whole squad did this,” said Robin Markowitz. “I don’t think one girl’s mistake should have the whole squad penalized.” Not everyone shared Markowitz’s point of view. “I believe that it’s good they are cracking down on all the college students for all the hazing,” said Jasmine Derr. “So I’m proud of it.” |
this is a tangent.
I was kind of surprised to see they only have the one squad for everything - we had separate squads for football, basketball and wrestling. What does everyone else's school do? |
Separate squads for major sports at least. Even in High School.
|
We have one for football and men's basketball, and one for women's basketball (I'm assuming the equivalent of varsity versus JV).

Rumor around campus has it that this girl was being hazed and forced to drink ungodly amounts of alcohol. One of the people that works at the IUP police said she was stumbling around the dorms screaming as if she had been tortured. They got her to the hospital and one or two more drinks she would have been gone.
IUP is going through a really crappy year. Death of Theta Chi pledge, cheerleading incident, GDI stabbed and murdered on homecoming by another GDI...it's actually pretty crazy here right now. And the cops have really cracked down lately, so I don't know what the deal is. And whoever said they thought OX & Crows were off campus...they are both still here. ATO's got kicked off recently as did Phi Delts, but that was all before I got here. |
