Unemployed :(

I gave my two week notice at work last Friday and they decided to let me go today so I'm unemployed. I have an interview tomorrow at Mercedes and I have a couple other places lined up that I am going to go check out.

Anyway, I became a campus representative for Greekgear.com today so if anyone would like to purchase anything and receive a 5% discount just enter coupon code BWC.

adpiucf 10-06-2005 11:24 AM

Sorry to hear about that. Since you were terminated, you can apply for unemployment benefits if your job search doesn't pan out quickly.

xo_kathy 10-06-2005 11:37 AM

Actually, that's probably not true. I'm gathering that she officially turned in her notice, but they then asked her to leave immediately instead of waiting the 2 weeks. That is not termination. And if she tried to get unemployment, the unemployment office would call her former job and they would explain that notcie was given.

Good luck with the Mercerdes job!

ZZ-kai- 10-06-2005 03:52 PM

I could be mistaken, but I believe that if you give a full 2 weeks notice, and they let you go, they should still pay you for those 2 weeks that you honored them with???

No.

AOX81 10-06-2005 07:41 PM

Nope, they don't have to pay me anything.

CarolinaDG 10-06-2005 09:24 PM

That's shitty. I'm sorry. But there's no other way to say it. I say we start a fund for you.

ETA: They did that to my new assistant, but she already had a job, so it didn't really matter, because it meant that I got her earlier. :-)

Are you sure? Is that legal? At my former job, people gave their 2 wks' notices to "go work for the competition". They were promptly escorted out, but we still had to pay them for the last 2 wks. I would think since they fired you - for giving notice - you should at least get unemployment benefits for those 2 wks! You can apply - no hassle - online.

CarolinaDG 10-07-2005 07:51 AM

It may depend on the state. Here, we are an "at will" state, so when we fire someone, we don't have to give them anything (other than unemployment).

The company does not give unemployment, the state does, and determination is based on why the person was let go. If they were let go through no fault of their own, they are eligible for unemployment, if they were let go for cause, they probably will not get unemployment.

Tickled Pink, your company probably did that because they wanted to reduce liability, not because they had to (if your state is an at will state, and most are)

Yes, our state is an at will state also. But the company has to pay the unemployment (in situations where it is paid). When they released people for the 2wks notice due to working for competitors, they don't want to give the person a chance to get confidential information/ files that can be used on the new job.

Oh - and former company. I quit my job months ago (family decision - weird hrs, new baby, too much stress...etc.), so I'm also unemployed, but I'd been there so long that I still have contacts there and like the company.:)

ETA: At any rate - AOX81 - good luck in your job hunt. Luckily, I'm finding alot of employers actually want you to apply online - so this cuts down on the rat race considerably.

I guess it could be worse... when I was laid off of my job, THEY gave ME two weeks notice. Then they treated me like crap for 2 weeks in case I decided just to leave on my own so I COULDN'T apply for unemployment.

It was the worst two weeks ever.

Good luck finding something. There's always Craigslist...

My best friend went through a similar situation at her last job. :(

That was true for me back in Janurary, I was even told so by our HR department (I asked because I figured my boss would be a prick and tell me to leave immediately). My boss told me I didn't need to come in for what was supposed to be my last day and I still got paid for it.

AOX81 10-11-2005 06:15 PM

I applied at a temp agency today. My ID looks like a mugshot, lol. Hopefully I'll get something soon. Has anyone else ever gone through a temp agency?

SmartBlondeGPhB 10-15-2005 09:31 PM

With one right now (Corestaff) and I'm currently in a position at Microsoft. I like it because I'm at a point in my life where I'm not sure what I want to do anymore.

AOX81 10-17-2005 09:29 PM

I have a job interview tomorrow at 10am. :)

AOX81 10-19-2005 01:32 PM

I went on two job interviews yesterday and I was not impressed by or interested in either one. :(

I received my last check from work and they paid me for 45 hours when I only worked around 25. :)

CarolinaDG 10-19-2005 09:00 PM

Yay for you (not about the jobs, though)

AOX81 10-20-2005 04:13 PM

I received another check today from my last job, lol. It was a revenue management check (commission check). Not much but it's just funny that I keep getting checks. :)

I have another interview scheduled for Monday so we'll see how that goes. :)

Gotta save it for Vegas :D

AOX81 10-26-2005 10:45 AM

I have another job interview scheduled for tomorrow and one for next Tuesday. Hopefully something will come up soon.

AOX81 10-27-2005 03:52 PM

Interview went well today. :) I go back on Tuesday for a 2nd interview. :)

AOX81 11-12-2005 07:40 PM

I received a phone call about a job today. I will hear more on Monday. If all goes well I will have an interview with the General Manager in Cleveland, then the Area Manager in New York, and then the Regional VP in Dallas. :)

AOX81 11-15-2005 12:15 PM

Job interview in 2 1/2 hours! :D

AOX81 11-17-2005 05:59 PM

I took a one day job assignment from a temp agency today!! HORRIBLE!! I'm glad I only committed to one day. I probably would shoot myself if I had to go back there!

emleepc 11-21-2005 02:50 PM

I'm unemployed too. I got caught in downsizing....and it was handled very badly. Unfortunately for me, of course. I only got one day of vacation paid...no severance.

Now I'm looking for a job, any job.....retail is even hard right now....

Don't worry, something will come along!

I have a 2nd interview in New York on the 30th with the Regional Manager and the Regional VP! :)

I got hired by the East-West Center last week and today was my first day on the job. Pretty sweet considering it was only a one day work week! Back to my old University stomping grounds for me! For those who don't know what the EWC is, it's a federally funded program started in the 1950s to promote and foster American relations with Asian and Pacific nations. It's located at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, but it's totally independent from the State of Hawaii.

My official title is Fellows Research Specialist. I'll be assisting a number of Asian-Pacific scholars. It's a temporary position that can range anywhere between 3 to 6 months, depending on the progress of the scholars. The pay is surprisingly excellent (way better than they who fly the "Friendly" Skies.... aaaaand I get benefits and a cost of living allowance since it's a federally funded program.

And oh yeah, I get to play online because I work independently. Saweet.

In the meantime, I'm still looking for a more permanent position elsewhere, but this sure beats not doing shit, right?

Does being a flight attendant pay well? I just realized I have no idea what they'd make. I don't even think I could get within $15k.

I found out yesterday that probation officers start at $29k in Virginia. That surprised me too. Not that that little piece of info will help anyone here.

AOX81 - why'd you leave without setting up another job first? And congrats on the new one!

HotDamnImAPhiMu 02-08-2006 08:47 AM

I take that back. I'm going to guess $35k (to start). Am I within $15k?
