Wedding Guest Attire

Well, it looks as if I'm going to be attending two (possibly three! :) ) weddings of sorority women NOT in my sorority. My questions are simple:

1) Is wearing the same color as the bridesmaids still considered tacky?

2) Would wearing the sorority colors (theirs, not mine) be tacky?

kddani 10-01-2005 08:59 PM

I wore a blue dress to a wedding this summer, I think my mom wore something blue too, we didn't even realize it was the same color as the bridal party. But the mother of the bride actually thanked us for wearing the colors!

honeychile 10-01-2005 09:09 PM

Maybe I should explain: I'm going to a DZ's wedding (two weeks from today!) and I have a pink & green outfit that I really like. My other option is blue. The bridesmaids are wearing blue (somewhat the same color). I feel like I can't win!!

KSUViolet06 10-01-2005 11:06 PM

Same color as the sorority or the bridesmaids seems fine to me. It's a wedding, everyone will be too excited to think "Oh my God do you see honeychile wearing pink and green (or bridesmaid dress color)? What a wanna be!" The only color I'd steer away from is (obviously) white.

wrigley 10-02-2005 01:06 AM

Matching the bridesmaids color of the dress is no big deal. However wearing the same style of dress and color as the bridesmaids. That would be odd.

You should wear whichever outfit makes you feel great. It is not a fashion faux pas for you to wear pink and green outfit.

FSUZeta 10-02-2005 07:47 AM

lots of wedding guests will not know what color the bridesmaid dresses are or that the bride is a delta zeta or that delta zeta's colors are pink and green, so i say go for it!!

AchtungBaby80 10-02-2005 08:51 AM

I don't think it'd be tacky at all. The only person you don't want to be wearing the same color as, is the bride. :p

honeychile 10-02-2005 10:32 AM

Thank you all for your advice! It occurred to me late last night that I was being terribly conceited, even thinking that someone might be looking at what I may be wearing, instead of the bride(s). I realize that, so long as I don't wear white or black, I'll be fine.

Thanks again!

What about wearing red? I heard that back in the day wearing red was like the job of the mistress.

I wore red to a wedding last December, and the bridal party was also wearing it. I felt kinda weird, but blue is different cuz it's not so stand-outish.

I was going to mention that but didn't--my grandmother always said not to wear red to a wedding because it was in poor taste. There's also a superstition around here that it's bad luck.

Now, I've worn black to weddings before. But I wear black everywhere, so I don't think anybody really thought anything of it.

I was at a wedding yesterday in Newport and the feeling was the brides colors were fall colors so i wore this dark plum dress , which was one of them and not matching the brides maid, but same color as the mother of the bride , but a lot of ppl were that way ..... if it falls within the color scheme of the wedding than i say it is ok.....JUST NOT WHITE!

xo_kathy 10-02-2005 05:21 PM

I went to a good friend's wedding last weekend and her colors were dark brown and sage green. I knew it, but I was wearing a brown dress anyway (she knew and didn't care and she wore a reddish dress to my wedding and that was what my BMs wore and I didn't care). ANYWAY! With brown and green being pretty hot colors now, half of the female guests matched the colors! She thought it was funny! :)

PhoenixAzul 10-02-2005 06:32 PM

Hahah, I feel bad now! Two of my S.O.'s good friend have gotten married since we've been dating. Both times I wore the same *very very red* dress. Woops.

UKTriDelt 10-02-2005 07:57 PM

I think being dressed appropriately for the season (fall, spring, etc) and the level of dress requested by the invitation should come first. If the wedding is this fall or winter, a pink/green dress isn't the way to go. You also have to consider what time of day the wedding is... so many variables! Could be a great oportunity to go dress shopping!

dzrose93 10-02-2005 11:34 PM

Wearing pink and green is no problem, as long as it's not too "springy" for the season. (Personally, I would have loved to see girls in DZ colors at my wedding!) :) Just don't wear white or red. White is (obviously) for the bride only, and red isn't supposed to be worn because it is traditionally viewed as trying to draw attention away from the bride. Black used to be a no-no also, but it's becoming much more common to wear it now. Hope this helps! :)

It was a family wedding but they said to wear something cool even though it was at 6 pm. They didn't expect anyone to wear extremely formal attire (i.e. tuxedos, etc.) I wore a black dress that came down to my knees and was short sleeved. I was cool as I could possibly be in the hot southern heat. BTW, I absolutely hated the wedding because the bride's side was absolutely the rudest, most uncongeniable people I have ever seen. I about turned around and told them they were giving Northerners a bad name (i.e. they were from Pennsylvania and so was the bride). My cousin met her at law school at the University of Pittsburgh. She dropped out after the first year because she didn't like it. She was rather whiney. Oh well. Off of my soapbox.

I say wear what you want to just as long as it's not jeans and a t-shirt.

Being a "Northerner" I'm curious what they were doing that gave us a bad name.

Or how what they were doing had anything to do with where they hailed from geographically. It's like saying that one Chinese family acting like idiots gives all Chinese people a bad name.

Rudeness and general idiocy isn't limited by geography, race, or any other boundaries one can think of.

Peaches-n-Cream 10-03-2005 01:30 PM

You give Northerners a bad name makes me think of Bon Jovi which makes me happy.

Honeychile, I think that you can wear the same colors as her sorority or her bridal party. One thing though, my sister inadvertently wore a very similar dress as a bridal party a few years ago. Everyone kept confusing her as a bridesmaid including the photographer. It was pretty funny. They had great taste in dresses. :)

It's a hunter green velvet dress, with pink piping. It has a pink jacket, but I don't usually wear it with it. I know it sounds ugly, but it's just funky enough that I love it!

I don't see why that wouldn't be acceptable - just don't carry a purse with a turtle on it.

Oh that would work just fine! Very appropriate for the fall... I wish I could pull off velvet

I think it sounds perfectly seasonal... and I'd love to see a picture of it! :)

I like the smaller clutches with the detachable straps. My only concern is the pink color in the purse may not match pink in the jacket.
