I'll be sucking down the booze this weekend to get through it.

moe.ron 09-30-2005 03:05 PM

Sucks that I'll be watching the game early in the morning. Damn you time difference, damn you.

KSigkid 09-30-2005 08:19 PM

I've been looking forward to this for so long, especially since it got close towards the end of the summer. I'm nervous but excited. I was hoping my Yankees would stay close enough to make this series meaningful playoff-wise.

I'll be having a few beers no matter what happens; the question is whether they'll be celebratory or in anger.

BobbyTheDon 10-01-2005 12:28 AM

does anyone know the tiebreaker rules?

I honestly think the Yanks are gonna win tommorow and the Red Sox are gonna win the last game.

So that means their records would be identical. However, that would mean the Yankees won the season series 10-9. Does that factor into anything? Or will they just automatically go to a 1 game playoff? Also, what if fuckin the Indians finish with the same exact same record?

Good lord my heart cannot take this.

I hate AROD.

I hate Damon.

I like Jeter

I like Ortiz

I LOVE MATSUI. mothereffin best player on the yanks dammit.

Go Dodgers, Go D rays, War Astros and LETS GO ANGELS and PADRES!

SmartBlondeGPhB 10-01-2005 12:54 AM

They would go to a 1 game playoff, like the M's did a number of years ago. Now, I can't tell you what would happen if it was a 3-way tie.

But, the Sox are going to win both games so it won't matter. :D Or more appropriately, the Yankees are going to LOSE, I don't care who wins. I just REALLY want the Yankees to lose.

mu_agd 10-01-2005 10:13 AM

The tiebreaker game is scheduled for Monday, if it's needed.

GO SOX!

Thrillhouse 10-01-2005 12:05 PM

Both teams might make the playoffs anyway as long as Cleveland keeps stumbling against Chicago's "B" team.:D

lauralaylin 10-01-2005 12:25 PM

Would the tie breaker be in Boston or NY?

NY won the coin toss a few weeks ago, so there.

Yeah, last night was kind of a surprise. Unfortunately, I didn't pay too much attention; my focus is on two teams right now, and last night wasn't a good start.

valkyrie 10-01-2005 02:12 PM

I am so sick of both of these teams I wish there was a way for them to BOTH LOSE EVERY GAME AND STFU.

Our favorite bar is having a $2 happy hour (Brooklyn Lager only!) from 1 this afternoon to 10 at night. Either way, it ain't going to be pretty.

Wow, Brooklyn Lager is a solid beer. That's not a bad deal at all. I would physically force my friends to go wherever that deal was happening.

and also, I believe they shuold have the tiebreaker game in switzerland.

I am pullin for the Indians to win these next two so bad!

The red Sox better be thankin they dont face matsui every at bat

and the yanks better be thankin that they dont face Ortiz every at bat.

moe.ron 10-01-2005 03:05 PM

Matsui is the man!!!

BobbyTheDon 10-01-2005 03:19 PM

hell yeah nooka! MATSUI is the man!

Yanks should just buy Ichiro and make it a Japanese takeover.

moe.ron 10-01-2005 03:33 PM

The way Cleveland is imploding, it really doesn't matter what the results will be in this series.

Ichiro will fit nicely in a Yankee uniform.

My good friend, who I always watched the games with just moved to NYC last month. She called me from some bar last night that was all Sox fans and they had quarter beers for the game. She was like "this is almost as good as the Ave, but it's not Boston!"

moe.ron 10-01-2005 03:57 PM

Mo will not be going pitching today. Gordon might be pitching, but odds are Mo is not going to close the game.

Well, it turned out Mo was in there. Not a bad idea, you want your best pitcher going with the game on the line.

I will admit I underestimated my boys this year; another Division title, now time to win another World Series title.

BobbyTheDon 10-01-2005 05:14 PM

ok so they won the divison? so i guess them winning the season series 10-8 (possibly 10-9) did come to play. What the hell was this whole thought about these two teams playing a one game playoff then? It never would have came down to that.

All the yankees had to do was just win 1 game during this series.

Or, if the Red Sox swept this series then they would have won the division outright.. There is no way both teams would have split the season series. So what the hell was this whole talk about a 1 game playoff! I'm not talking about you Smartblonde. Perhaps what happened with the Mariners/Angels 10 years ago was that the two teams split the season series. I'm talking about all those dumbass baseball commentators takling about all these scenarios. The truth is, none of those scenerios ever would have happened.

Not quite true, the first option could of happened...:

BOSTON -- One round down, two rounds to go. And the postseason carousel keeps spinning.
Losses Friday night by the Indians and the Yankees moved us closer to the end of the season, but not necessarily closer to a resolution.

Boston tied New York atop the American League East, each team with a record of 94-66 and one game ahead of Cleveland (93-67).

Here are the remaining possible scenarios.

The Yankees, Red Sox, Indians finish in a three-way tie if:

The Yankees and Red Sox split the remaining two games of their series, and the Indians take the next two games from the White Sox. All three would then end the regular season with 95-67 records.

• What happens then:

The first double tiebreaker in Major League history.

On Monday, the Red Sox and Yankees would play in Yankee Stadium to determine the AL East champion.

On Tuesday, the loser of that game would play the Indians to determine the AL Wild Card.

The Yankees and Red Sox finish in a two-way tie if:

They split their remaining two games.

• What happens then:

If the Indians win only one more game, they are history.

The Yankees would be awarded the AL East title, based on a 10-9 edge in regular-season play between the teams, and the Red Sox would enter the playoffs as the Wild Card.

The Red Sox or the Yankees tie the Indians for the Wild Card if:

Either Boston or New York loses twice, while the Indians split with the White Sox.

• What happens then:

The winner here is the outright AL East champion, and the loser plays Cleveland in the Wild Card tiebreaker.

Yeah, no since messing around even with a four run lead in the 9th.

As a white sox fan, I'm kind of torn between wanting to see the angels or red sox in the first round. The angels have the pitching and Boston doesn't yet the red sox line up scares me.

I think it's funny your boys are giving the Indians such a run with the second-stringers going. It's like you're sticking it to them for giving you a scare to end the season.

BobbyTheDon 10-01-2005 11:34 PM

Thanks for trying to explain it Docet but it still seemed a little weird to me.

Check it.

Yanks and Red Sox come into this series with the Yanks up 1 game & with the Yanks leading the season series 9-7. Yanks lose 1st game.

Red Sox and Yanks are all tied up however with the Yanks leading the season series 9-8 now.

Yanks win game 2. Yanks go up 1 game again, and now they clinch the season series 10-8. Even if they lose the last game and they still win the season series even though both teams have identical records.

But, according to THIS...if the Yanks and Red Sox split the last two games then there would be a one game playoff to determine the winner of the division. Ok but why are the Yankees declared the winner of the division already? Obviously they won the clinched the division based on the head to head games.

And Also, even if the Yanks, Red Sox and Indians all finished with identical records, there never would have been a need for a tie breaker between the Yanks and the Red Sox to determine the division. Why? Because well, the Yanks won based on head to head games. So the only one game playoff that would be needed would have to be between the Indians and Red Sox. BUT, why wouldn't they just go on head to head games between the Red Sox and Indians?

mu_agd 10-02-2005 04:52 PM

Thanks to the Indians loss, the Sox clinched the Wild Card. Now on to the anxiety attacks of the ALDS.

so damn cool 10-02-2005 04:55 PM

sick of boston and ny.

i hope anaheim or chisox come through.

Do you guys think Torre has assured himself a sport in the Hall of Fame?

Yes, absolutely. He'll go in as a manager, but I think the combination of his playing days (he was a very good hitter) and his managerial success will get him in. He's also beloved throughout baseball, which doesn't hurt when you have to rely on the Veteran's Committee.

It's interesting though; it will always be a question of whether he was that good of a manager, or whether the talent did it for him. He was largely unsuccessful before coming to the Yankees. You can say the same thing about Tony LaRussa, Sparky Anderson and a whole bunch of other guys too though, so who knows.
