Top Newbie Questions

This started out just for fun... What are some of the most frequently asked questions asked by new posters to GC/and what are the best and/or most humorous responses?

But it seems like we should keep a tally so....

New users, please use the SEARCH function before you post. I swear on all things holy that your question has probably been answered 100 times on this site. And if you have questions about Greece or the Greek language, we're not that kind of Greek Chat.

Can you tell me about the reputations of the sororities at ______University? NO. Reputations are personal opinions, and you're much better off going though recruitment and seeing for yourself which the best sorority is--- it is the one where you can most be yourself. We don't like to discuss individual sorority chapter reputations on Greek Chat or "name names."

Do the sororities have national reputations? NO.

I have horrible grades. Can I get into a sorority? NO.

I'm 35 and I have 2 kids. Am I eligible to join a sorority. YES. But you'll probably have fewer options because you may not find much in common with the more traditional students.

Are sororities like what I have seen on TV? Or the book Pledged? NO. We are social and service organizations and the sterotypes you see on TV or read about are not an accurate portrayal for 99% of Greek Life Organizations.

I am an initiated member. Can I drop out and join another national sorority? NO.

Can I join a sorority if there isn't a chapter of it at my school? NO.

Is it true that all sororities haze? NO. All sororities have strict anti-hazing policies. If you know of an organization on your campus violating these policies, contact the campus Greek Adviser.

What kind of a time committment is a sorority? VARIES. Weekly mandatory meetings, semesterly community service hours and study hours, as well as membership retreats. If you have a packed schedule and are pursuing multiple degrees, you may not have the time you would like to have for the bare minimums of membership, let along the "fun stuff" like the social events and date parties. Go through sorority recruitment and learn more about what is expected of the members at your school.

How do I join an NPC sorority? Register for Sorority Recruitment at your university.

How do I join an NIC fraternity? Go through Rush.

How do I join a D-9? Ask an NPHC member in real life. Research the hell out of the organizations in the D-9 before you do.

How do I learn more about sororities and fraternities in general? All of the groups have national Web sites. It is a good place to start.

How do Greeks choose their members? VARIES. But it's private information and we're not going to tell you.

Is it true that X number of women living together constitutes a brothel, and that's why they don't have sorority houses at my university? NO. There is no such thing as a brothel law.

Can I join a collegiate sorority after college? DEPENDS on the organization and it's generally a lengthy process that can literally take years, if it happens at all.

Are there non-collegiate sororities? YES.

Why does it seem like everyone on Greek Chat jumps down my throat whenever I ask a question? We've head it 1000 times before. Use the SEARCH function. You don't need to bump a 6 year old thread. You can start a new one. But you may get your questions answered by searching first and then clarifying.

Question: I want to be an XYZ at the most competitve school in the county. I have a 1.3 GPA, I was in the Nerd Club in HS and president of the Antisocial Society. I bought my philanthropy round clothes at Goodwill and my pref dress at Hot Topic. Since XYZ is the top tier, what are my chances?

Answer: You have 2 chances: slim and none

To vary it...

"I made this HUGE mistake by joining NPC ABC. I was forced to leave and now I want to try rushing again. Can I?"

It's still no.

Q:My mom, sister, aunt and cousin are all XYZ-NPHC members...how do I join?

A: Ask them [lock]

JenMarie 09-29-2005 03:51 PM

I'm a senior at Super Competitive College USA. I'm a double major in quantum physics and astronomy and plan to take the [insert big science test] this semester. Would I have time to join?

Answer:
If you don't have time to sleep, you probably shouldn't join up.

33girl 09-29-2005 05:18 PM

Why are there so many mean people on GC?

AchtungBaby80 09-29-2005 05:26 PM

This thread is great. After you've seen the same question umpteen times, it starts getting ridiculous. Here's one...

"I really, really, really wanna join a sorority, but I heard they all haze! Is that true?"

Sure it is, and we drop you into a coffin during initiation, too, just so you know. :p

I'm not sure this question has an answer. The closest I have come to is, "Some people enjoy being mean to others for no reason."

LOL...I'm totally falling into the mean category today, but I have a reason!

tunatartare 09-29-2005 05:46 PM

Why are all XYZ's so fat?

Erik P Conard 09-29-2005 05:52 PM

not mean...

after all, we can't all be mean..
like Tommy Earp and me...
we are dollinks
quite a catch
yep, neat
top tier
yep

tunatartare 09-29-2005 05:55 PM

I really, really, really wanna be in an NPHC sorority, but I don't know which one. Can I rush all of them? Also do you think I can wear a pink suit with a green top to AKA's rush? And I'm white, do you think that will hurt my chances?

LMAO...the sad thing is that people say stuff in REAL life. I know a girl that wanted to go a certan NPHC sorority really bad. Anyway, she went to every event in their colors. I kept telling her that wasn't the smartest thing to do but she swore that I didn't know what I was talking about since I wasn't NPHC.

Needless to say she didn't make it...

Tom Earp 09-29-2005 06:17 PM

ONLY and ONLY Can Unkie E say this about Me!:p

And Yes, there are some mean people on GC. They know whom they are.

But, there are also Ass Wipes who want to stir Stuff up and ask Inane Questions and stir a Big Cauldron=Pot of Crap!

Get it? Got It!:p

valkyrie 09-29-2005 06:23 PM

What is a dollink?

"So I rushed for all 4 formal recruitments and tried to COB every year and still didn't get a bid. Now I'm going to AI. Who is easiest to AI into?"

Those threads are fabulous to settle down with a bowl of popcorn while reading

Erik P Conard 09-29-2005 07:01 PM

dollink

'dollink' is how us rustics, say from Kansas, perceive the
Eastern princesses pronounce the word 'darling.'
And, like Tommy and me, we are 'dollinks'
Yes, indeedy, we are just that.
Dollinks

Some of my favs were taken, but I thought of two:

"I have been through the NM education period, but I just can't remember what AOT means?!? Can someone pm me and tell me, or just send me an e-mail to: obviouslyimnotamember@pleasebuymylameexcuse.edu"

And,

"I was a XYZ at Small Tech and transfered to Big State right after I was initiated. XYZ is not at Big State. Can I rush another NPC?"

I'm not NPC and I know the answer to this one!!

To be fair, I was one of those people...when I was initiated certain info just did not stick, and the older initiated members I asked couldn't answer my question either! We had to go get the ritual book and find it. Turns out it was in there, but I guess when you're being initiated it's a lot to take in so you miss some stuff. :p

I do agree that most of these are not legit, though.

Lol. Did you happen to see the lovely posts asking about what AOT meant yesterday and today in the KD forum? Gotta love those. Click click goes the delete button!

No, I missed those, but a while ago it seemed someone was asking that question every week.

To AB80, I know that it is easy to miss hearing stuff, but you did what you were suppose to do - you asked someone you trusted in your chapter, face to face. Then both of you went to look it up in your ritual book together. You did not post your question on a message board because you "forgot". That is what your sorority books are for - to look stuff up if you don't remember. But of course, you actually have to have a ritual book to look info up.;)

a sister and I made study post-its for her car...we studied our info the round trip from columbus-pittsburgh and back. I still remember our re-founders by dashboard position.

"... is true about the sheep?"

"do you guys, like... ah... get drunk alot?"

"... *giggle* *giggle* do you guys like haze and stuff?"

Sister Havana 09-29-2005 11:13 PM

I heard XYZ circles the fat on their pledges in front of fraternity guys. Is that true?

Hi. I want to form a sorority at my school even though my school does not recognize Greek organizations. Therefore we will just call ourselves a sisterhood. I think ABZ is super cool...therefore we want to call ourselves ABZD and use all their symbols!

Unregistered- 09-29-2005 11:14 PM

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this one yet!

In the XYZ forum:

"Hi girls! I'm a HS senior and I'll be rushing at So-and-so University this fall! I'm new to the boards, but I really like what XYZ stands for and I hope to be an XYZ this fall. I was just wondering if there are any XYZs that would be willing to write me a rec especially because no one's Greek in my family and I don't have any Greek friends. Any help would be much appreciated. ThAnKs!"

Two minutes later...in the ABC forum:

"Hi girls! I'm a HS senior and I'll be rushing at So-and-so University this fall! I'm new to the boards, but I really like what ABC stands for and I hope to be an ABC this fall. I was just wondering if there are any ABCs that would be willing to write me a rec especially because no one's Greek in my family and I don't have any Greek friends. Any help would be much appreciated. ThAnKs!"

No responses are heard. Just the banging of heads on the computer monitors.

lifesaver 09-30-2005 12:58 AM

My favorite is...

I just got elected rush chair. Anybody know any good rush slogans?

adpiucf 09-30-2005 09:57 AM

Although it has already been mentioned... can we have one more:

"I'm rushing this fall. What are my chances?"

Or...

"What's rush like at XYZ College?"

AlphaFrog 09-30-2005 10:26 AM

Ok, I'm NOT trying to cause trouble but name the top 3 frats at your college, because, UM, I LOOOOOVE the XZ's and the RQ's and the PYZ's caz they throw, like THE best parties. Who throws the best parties at your school?

moe.ron 09-30-2005 11:10 AM

my step mother nanny's next door neighbour was a xyz. Does that mean I'm a legacy?

BBelleADPi 09-30-2005 11:53 AM

Hi, I'm going to Big Central University and I'm going through rush in the fall and I'm going to be an XYZ!! I can't wait til I'm a member! Oh, and here's my forum group about it...

twhrider13 09-30-2005 12:54 PM

I have no idea what AOT means, of course, but every time I see it, I think of horse shows. At a lot of Walking Horse shows, AOT is used as an abbreviation for the Amateur Owned and Trained class. So I guess you could always bust that definition out on the nosy folks. :p

AlphaFrog 09-30-2005 01:10 PM

Maybe we should sticky this to the top for new posters: If your question is in this thread, you'd be best not to ask it....

AlphaFrog 09-30-2005 01:37 PM

Recent post just made me think of one--

I'm just curious, but please describe IN DETAIL the voting process EACH sorority goes through when deciding who to invite back/bid... I'm just wanting to know because I only talked to each girl for 4.342 minutes and how can that snobby girl I met on the way in have gotten a good look at my Lilly dress and Kate Spade bag from that???

KillarneyRose 09-30-2005 02:04 PM

"What is it with you people and pineapple juice?"

kdonline 09-30-2005 02:50 PM

"I am going through rush in 3 days at a very competitive school. Can you greekchatters write me a rec? I'll PM you my resume and we can chat on AIM so you can get to know me."

(and of course, someone says, "SURE!" )
