Commander In Chief

I really enjoyed the season premiere. Geena Davis did a great job. Donald Sutherland is the man you'll love to hate. It was great that the writers showed how some women on staff weren't receptive to the idea of a female president.

I think this is a way better alternative to "My Name Is Earl".

 ;)

ASUADPi 09-28-2005 08:45 AM

Since this is the thread I saw first, I shall reply to this one.

I actually liked the show.

Although I wouldn't have wanted to give in to the President saying for "me" to resign. I'd be like "hello why the heck did you even chose me then?" Seriously, he could have found a female running mate that had his "interests" at heart.

I liked Geena Davis' character but I hope she grows a bit of a backbone. She really didn't until Donald Sutherland's character started in on her. (And from the previews it looks like he attempts to sabotage her next week).

I'm sure that will be part of the storyline every week.

I thought the show was decent and I think Davis is great casting.

ZTABullwinkle 09-28-2005 12:36 PM

I really enjoyed the show last night. I passed up Amazing Race to watch it!

Geena Davis is going to rock in this role. Donald Sutherland looks like an evil man, not to mention the tricks he pulls (or so it looks like next week).

I think this is going to be a keeper, at least I hope so.

That is why I love my TiVO! It really helps out when shows overlap or homework has to come first....

Sistermadly 09-28-2005 05:48 PM

It's not the West Wing, but it's pretty cool. I'll keep watching it.

Rudey 09-28-2005 06:11 PM

I was considering watching this (if I actually had the time), but then decided I wasn't a lesbian and wouldn't appreciate it enough.

I have yet to actually watch my tape of last night's show, but after reading some of your posts, I'm really excited about this show (it shall be taped alongside Amazing Race until my class schedule changes in November...:D)

ASUADPi 09-28-2005 11:32 PM

I guess the show was the number one show last night with an estimated 16.2 million viewers. According to Entertainment Tonight that is the highest number for any new show premiered on ABC.

aephi alum 09-29-2005 08:48 AM

Loved it! :)

Geena Davis did a great job.

I had trouble understanding why the president would choose a running mate whose views did not align with his own - to the point where he lay on his deathbed telling her to resign. He wanted the women's vote, but surely there were other qualified women out there who would have pulled that in?

I loved the scenes with her husband meeting with the First Lady's staff, being shown the First Lady's office (all pink), meeting with the White House chefs, etc. "Mrs. Clinton didn't bother doing X, and that didn't go over very well." :p I wonder what his official title will be - surely they can't keep calling him the First Lady??

ASUADPi 09-29-2005 08:56 AM

I think they eventually called him "first gentleman".

I wanted to slap the woman who is the "first lady's" chief of staff. I found it utterly annoying that she kept saying "Mrs. Clinton did this" or "Mrs. Clinton did that". First off, Clinton hasn't been in office for five years and this "term" is supposed to take place after President Bush's, which won't end until 08, and 2 1/2 years later, so we're looking early 2011. I say this because in all technicalities Clinton hadn't been in office for 11 years but this chick was still comparing everyone to Mrs. Clinton. Man, she was annoying :). I hope the "first gentleman" tells her to give it a rest. LOL

Hmmm...I don't know....It could also be that this is supposed to take place in 2006 or so, as if the second Bush term never happened (i.e. he decided not to run for a second term). But who knows in TV land??

I think the point was to show that he is experiencing the similar resistance to his new role that his wife is experiencing in her new role. Hillary Clinton was the first First Lady to break convention in her role. It was a subtle way of saying that he would be met with similiar resistance if he chose to break from the convention of his role. And it was funny. I thought it was funny and clever and I am a big Hillary supporter.

I thought the show was very good and I am eager to see how the rest of the season unfolds.

MysticCat 09-29-2005 03:39 PM

Did anybody else find it beyond laughable that she had her generals threatening military action against Nigeria is order to save the woman who was going to be executed for adultery. Granted, a human rights travesty, but talk about a ridiculous grip on foreign policy and a totally unbelievable scenario.

AznSAE 10-03-2005 06:27 PM

did she ever name a vice-president? there was a re-run on saturday and i only caught 30 minutes of it.

That is in this week's episode. The previews gave me the impression that she wants to nominate someone, but it gets leaked that someone else is being nominated. The leak is from none other than the Speaker of the House (Donald Sutherland). Then end of the preview showed her saying that she will not anyone else run her Presidency....

If only I could remember my school stuff as easily as useless TV shows info....

The sad thing is that I thought the exact same thing.

Watching ABC hype this damn show makes me puke.

" she had a nightmare!"

" She's not a woman. She's the President...."

"uhhh she's not a woman?"

"is she leading? I think she's leading"

Huh?! Nobody but the President can nominate a new Vice President.

What I gathered from the previews last week is that the Speaker of the House *leaked* information that the president would be nominating this one person (who would do anything possible to undermine the president) before she could announce who she was nominating for VP. The previews kept using words like "sabotage" to get the point across that many people are doing whatever they can to undermine the new President.

LeslieAGD 10-05-2005 08:01 AM

I taped the first episode of this show (cause I watch House) and didn't get around to watching it...But, since stupid baseball was on last night (and for the next 2-3 weeks), I watched last night.

I liked it, especially the ending where she was talking to the General. I liked it because they were able to make her a strong character without her being a b*tch.

KDAngel 10-09-2005 07:01 AM

So I just watched both episodes thanks to my DVR (I've not had time before now), and I love this show. I was big time into the WB's Jack and Bobby last year, and this is gonna take its spot for me. I loved West Wing for a while too, but I like the spin on this. It didn't just make her the President with ease, it's realistically making things difficult, but she's a good strong female character. I think it's enjoyable to watch, and I look forward to future episodes.

KDAngel 10-19-2005 12:31 AM

Probably my favourite show on television now. I'm so glad there's a good political show on tv again! :D

DeltAlum 10-19-2005 08:45 PM

Maybe the best line of the Fall Season so far:

"Is She leading?"

Why do I feel like the husband was REALLY the leak?

Even after her Cheif of Staff (Jim who turned in his resignation) showed up with Tempelton's COS in a towel?? I'm sure that is what they want us to think, but it sure did look like it!

It's going to be interesting how the VP thing plays out now that Templeton has something over on him. Templeton is deliciously devilish!

I really like this show too!

Senusret I 11-09-2005 07:22 PM

True.....

But I just really don't like the husband, LOL

Unless Mac said something to her husband about that meeting that only Jim, Bridges, and Mac had, Jim HAS to (inadvertently) be the link - unless Bridges spread the information to someone else, which isn't unlikely (or maybe Bridges didn't really die, and it's a conspiracy theory :p)

Maybe after next week's show, where it looks like Mac has something over Templeton, the thing he has over the VP will "mysteriously" slip everyone's minds

This show has drawn me in, however :)

kansas13 11-15-2005 11:28 PM

Tonights episode was really good!! I really feel bad for Templetons COS, but I guess when you can't trust someone anymore you have to fire them. Did you see the previews for next week?!?! Mark Paul Gossler (Saved By the Bell and NYPD Blue) joins the cast. I think that is going to be good!!

docetboy 11-15-2005 11:29 PM

Too bad she got fired. She was hot.

polarpi 11-15-2005 11:46 PM

I still haven't seen the episode for tonight (another 1hr and 15 min to go! :D), but I wonder what this'll mean for Mac's CoS - did they explain the "relationship" between the two from last week?

amandadyer 11-16-2005 09:15 PM

The leak

Regarding the leak: During the 1st episode, after the small meeting where VP Allen is holding the resignation letter, once everyone left the room, either someone remained or someone walked back into the room and picked up the resignation letter. Does anyone remember who did that? I swear it happened! That person must be the leak.

Amanda

kansas13 11-16-2005 10:07 PM

I thought they figured out the leak for the book was the old president himself. Remember the end of the episode two weeks ago when her and Jim were talking about who was in the room when they disscussed what happened...it was was her, Jim, and the old president. While she wouldn't give out that info and Jim said he didn't either (I believe him) they put together that the only other person that could of done it was the old president...before he died of course!!

KDAngel 11-17-2005 02:42 AM

^I thought that was just a cover-up. I'm thinking the person's still out there.

I do remember that, but the actual letter that she wrote after the president's death became public, and he couldn't have had anything to do with that, since she didn't write it until after he died. I remember someone picking it up, I just can't remember who!

LeslieAGD 11-17-2005 09:51 PM

I meant to tape Tuesday's episode, but I left the VCR on the wrong channel. :(

Can I get a recap, please?

Senusret I 11-17-2005 10:11 PM

A tape was discovered with Templeton saying some racist things in 1965.

Templeton discovered that Mac's exec assistant was gay and HIV positive. Natasha Henstridge tipped off the black guy chief of staff. (Jim?) Black guy told Mac -- Mac asked gay guy to quit. Then Mac had a change of heart.

Mac gave her husband a job and nobody was happy about it.

Husband continued to be a prick to black guy. Black guy was all "You know where my office is, beeyatch."

Mac decides to show Templeton the tape and he damn near pees himself with humiliation. He told Mac he owed her one. He went home to his diabetic wife.

The first daughter is being branded a slut by the boy she kicked it with, humiliating her brother, who is a lazy schmuck failing his classes.

That's all I remember.

kansas13 11-18-2005 12:35 AM

That was a great recap Senusret I, but just one more thing. Templeton figured out himself that his COS leaked out the info to the president that she has a gay assisistant with HIV and that he was going to tell the press. Templeton then fired her.
