BET Comedy Awards (TONIGHT)

I just got home from working out (SOROR KIM ;)) and tuned in to the pre-show. I'm looking forward to something different.

Anyone else watching?

DSTinguished1 09-27-2005 09:10 PM

I am watching it Soror. I am mad at how they just clowned George Bush. We make it real obvious that Bush is NOT our president:o

I must admit that I have a little something something for Martin Lawrence...i don't know why:p

In referrence to Big Momma's House pt2: Am I the only who hates movie sequels?? They are never as good as the original it just seems like the directors are milking a plot until it dries out.

This one does look a little random. Some sequels work but this one does not appear that way. Let me do some digging.

What started out as comedian/writer Paul Mooney's questionable "Nigga Wake Up Award" turned into an all-out insult to Diana Ross last night at the taping of the BET Comedy Awards at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium. For some reason Mooney thought the famed singer was deserving of being talked about like a dog because of her arrest for drunk driving from a year or two ago.

Needless to say, Mooney's mean spirited tirade was met with disbelief, disgust and silence from the audience in the auditorium and members of the press in the media room covering the event. What made it more difficult to witness was the fact that Tracey Ellis Ross was in the auditorium while Mooney went through his attack. Actually Miss Ellis Ross couldn't take it and ran out of the auditorium.

Backstage in the press room when EUR's Lee Bailey confronted Mooney about his bit on Ross being way over the top, the comedian defended his actions.

"How can somebody get arrested for (being under the influence) and go to jail and I be over the top? I think that's over the top, don't you? Agree or disagree, folks. No, comedy is not over the top," Mooney said. "When you are a celebrity and you do crazy stuff, that's the game."

At that point Bailey asked him if thought about the fact that Tracey Ellis Ross was in the room while he delivered his diatribe against her mother.

"I didn't know ... her mama could've been in there, that's not the point. I didn't drive drunk," Mooney shot back. "Now I'm responsible for Diana Ross? If you scrutinize Jay Leno and David Letterman the same way you scrutinize me, then I'll agree with you, but if you don't touch them white folks don't touch me. They say what ever they want to say every night."

Record executive and member of old school group Club Nouveau, Jay King, was in the audience and was clearly disgusted by Mooney's comments.

"Diana Ross' thing to me was just a personal demon she was dealing with, it wasn't something that he needed to go on record (talking about). If he'd have kept it light and funny it would've been fine, but he got down right dirty and divisive," King told us. "He said he says nigga a hundred times a day, well today he did ... he was a nigga a hundred times for doing that. Her daughter was in that audience. That's ridiculous. He was nasty and he was rude. Paul Mooney knows better than that. He knows where to draw the line and stepped over the line tonight. I've seen him push the envelope, but tonight is the first time I've been offended by something he said, because with the Diana Ross thing, once he knew he was offensive, he just continued on ... he didn't wanna stop. At that point, he meant to hurt and damage somebody."

That raises the question of how BET is going to deal with Mooney's "moment." In fact, with all the "niggas," "bitches," "MFs" and other words that can't be said on TV, the network's producers and editors have got one hellava challenge ahead of them. The BET Comedy Awards air tomorrow night from 9 until 11 PM E/P.

Gyrl7 09-27-2005 10:16 PM

That was in poor taste being that Tracey Ellis Ross was in the audience.

Is it me or is Kimberly Elise ready to go home??? Dang she looks like me at work all day everyday! SMILE GIRL!!!

DSTinguished1 09-27-2005 10:33 PM

^^^Yeah that was a bit much. But im not a big fan of Mooney anyway. You can tell that Steve Harvey sensed it too when he got back on stage.

Has Kimberly Elise ever been funny??? Even in the movie she was tight and stank. I have never seen her silly, funny or anything other than depressed, mad, upset, tense, sad, crying. Think about it...

John Q: She was a hot mess, understandable considering the situation. But still NOT funny.

Women Thou Art Loose: Sad, Depressed, Crying.

Set It Off: Sad, Depressed, Crying,

Manchurian Candidate: Tight, Stanch, Looked Mean as hayle

Diary of a Mad Black Woman: Sad, Depressed, Mad, Angry...certainly not funny

So why did she win a Comedy Award??

Why did she say she wanted to do a comedy??

She made me laugh when she could not rip that shirt open. I think she is tired of being as sad, depressed, broken, etc.

But the movie overall was a comedy, mainly due to Madea so that's what qualifies it as a comedy award.

DSTinguished1 09-27-2005 10:51 PM

oh. oh ok. but still....she has never made me laugh and she was looking bored and bitter in that audience. I just want her to laugh and smile and stop being so tight!

CrimsonTide4 09-27-2005 10:53 PM

1. Tisha, no more armpit length gloves

2. This Talking in the Closet Remake is funny as hell.

eta: I was surprised at all of the young people in the audience considering all the foul language throughout the night.

After the movie came out, it was reported that she and her husband had separated and that she and Shemar are now dating.

CT4-- is the show worth watching? Or is it something I should put on mute and just clown the questionable fashion choices of the attendees? :p :D

I've been doing some digging

From the September 22, 2005, Ru Report http://www.eurweb.com/story.cfm?id=22511

And with huge success of box office domination comes tabloid drama. Soon after the film hit big with North American filmgoers, Shemar Moore was romantically linked to Diary’s leading lady Kimberly Elise, who reportedly separated from her husband of 18 years. “No truth to it,” he yelled before the complete question came out. “She’s a sweetheart. Kimberly is my girl. When we were doing Diary, she was married. She’s separated from her husband these days, and having nothing to do with me.”
“I don’t think so,” he later snorted when a comparison to another beautiful home-wrecking Hollywood type was made. “I’m a lot of things but I don’t mess with fire. Not like that. But Kimberly is a sweetheart and it was wonderful to tell that story with her but from action to cut, we made you believe. But after ‘cut’ I backed away because her husband was standing right there. So no, we’re still developing –to this day—a wonderful friendship. I have so much respect for her as an actress …but I have nothing to do with the next chapter of her romantic life.”
Alrightee then. Thanks for clearing that up.

I enjoyed it last night. It stuck to the 2 hours and I was entertained.

I give BET a B+ overall.:)

I was listening to the Steve Harvey morning show on WBLS and a caller said that he was impressed with how Steve had handled the Paul Mooney situation, although I didn't know exactly what had transpired on the awards show.

Kudos to Steve - homie don't play dat!! :D

MORE REACTION TO MOONEY’S DIANA DISS: Underwood, Harvey weigh in on situation; bit may be left on editing room floor forever.

E-mail to a friend | Printer friendly (September 27, 2005)

*It’s hard to say how much of Sunday night’s BET Comedy Awards will actually make it on the air tonight at 9 p.m. As previously reported, there were more “n*****s,” “b***es” and “m*ther f***as” spat out that night at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium than in the entire career of NWA. But at no point in the evening did it get any lower on the class meter than when comedian Paul Mooney verbally eviscerated Diana Ross… as her daughter, Tracee Ellis Ross, sat in the audience.

You know you done messed up when Sheryl Underwood thinks you went too far.

“I’ma tell you something. I’m from Arkansas. You talk about my mama, I’ma run up on the stage and whup ya ass. That’s all there is to it,” Underwood told reporters backstage. “You can’t say nothin’ ‘bout nobody in my family; you can’t say nothin’ ‘bout my step-mama, my pretend mama, my big mamas, my play mamas. You can’t even say nothing about somebody who look like my mama.”

Mooney’s Diana Ross bit may not ever see the light of day. A source backstage overheard Tracee’s publicist angrily dress down BET staff, who in turn reassured her that the segment would be edited out of tonight’s telecast.

“I’m not sure what the producers are going to do where that’s concerned,” BET publicist Michael Llewellen admitted to reporters in the press room. “If it came across as much of a grenade [to producers] as it did [based on] some of the expressions I saw on your faces in here, I’m sure they’ll edit it.”

Mooney not only mocked Diana Ross’ drunk driving arrest, (an incident that happened nearly three years ago), but he also made fun of the Jan. 2004 mountain climbing death of Ross’ husband and Tracee’s step-father, Arne Naess Jr. The bit was part of Mooney’s “Nigga Wake Up Awards” comedy routine, which last year targeted Michael Jackson.

Tracee, a star of UPN’s “Girlfriends,” left the auditorium during the segment. Host Steve Harvey, who feels Mooney has a right to say whatever he wants to say, later approached the actress in a show of support.

“I was just letting Tracee Ross know that all of us love her and her mother,” Harvey told reporters backstage. “Paul Mooney did the thing about her mother getting that [Nigga Wake Up] award and then made that joke about her father disappearing on the mountain. This girl had lost her step-father in a mountain-climbing accident, and her mama is Diana Ross. Sh*t. That’s big love, Diana Ross. I just felt like since she was sitting out there, just let the audience give her some love. Comedy shouldn’t be f*cked up like that, especially at the expense of some people sitting there. You gotta let that weight up off her. The crowd wasn’t laughing at that, either.”

Meanwhile, other things did happen during the telecast. Martin Lawrence received the show’s prestigious 2005 Comedy Icon Award for his “outstanding body of work.”

“It’s a wonderful honor. I can’t believe it’s me they honored tonight like that, but I’ll take it,” he said backstage.

Tickled Pink 2 09-28-2005 06:08 PM

I didn't care for what he said last year with his "Coon" awards. I really wish they would stop having him up there. He is rude and distasteful.

On another note, Money Mike was hiiiillllarrrriooooouuuus!

A Letter To Tracy Ellis Ross

Dear Tracy,

If I were you, I would have took that award you won and knocked Paul Mooney upside his head with it. I ususally don't condone violence, but he had no right to talk about your mamma like that.

Signed,
JB13

The show was ok. Martin was looking SHARP! And yay for Sheryl for representing Zeta!:D

TheEpitome1920 10-01-2005 12:15 AM

I caught the re-run and...

Kat Williams had me DYING laughing. That is the first time I've ever seen him do stand up.

Is Shemar Moore a horn dog or what? Did he have to hump every woman he came across.

Props to Soror Underwood. She is definitely a hardworking Zeta. Not so sure about her outfit or that hot pink purse but I love her anyway!:p And Yay to Bro. Alexander...he is so cute to me.

Paul Mooney was NOT funny. And Tracey has a lot more restraint than I would have. Bless her lil' heart. Thanks Steve for saying something.

I give it a B-. Some of the skits were a bit much with the language. Terra Marie(sp?) needs to sit down somewhere.

Thanks for writing his name, 'cause I was still calling the man Money Mike.

Teeny Marie, Tiny Marie, Fake Tina Marie can not sing. She's pretty, tho'. She must be someone famous' girlfriend or relative, 'cause I saw her on Tyra's show and she sounded horrible.

Saw the Repeat...

Paul was kind of lame. He could be loosing his "touch". His skit last year was much better and funnier. Didn't Paul know Tracee would be there? Did he care? The BET writers probably had his skit on the teleprompters, so I guess I answered my own question. I guess it would have gone over better if Tracee wasn't there.

Did you all notice Duane Martin's lack of expression when Martin Lawrence received his Icon award? Tisha and Tachina were very excited. I guess Tisha has let it go, but Duane hasn't.

Sheryl Underwood has always been a favorite! You know she ALWAYS has a purse on her arm!

Wanda Sykes wasn't that funny. Paul could have used that material.

I LOVED the AMW skit about Dave Chappelle.

ETA:
Martin's wife. I was shocked to see that tat smack dab on her chest. :o Yeah. Mommie should have told daughter to place the gum under her tongue. :o

I was wondering if Martin and Tisha had made up after the drama during the end of "Martin". She did look excited, so I guess they have.

I forgot to mention the Dave Chappelle skit. That was funny as well as the Ceasar and Trapped in the Closet skits.

The daughter Martin had up on stage: I wonder if that is from his current wife or his ex-wife (who's now married to Emmitt Smith).

Yes! I saw that! Kimberly ELise also looked disgusted after Paul Mooney.

I liked the Trapped in the Closet skit.
