want to rush

I really want to rush because I want to date a frat guy and the only way to do that is to be in a sorority. I rushed last year and didn't get a bid so I went to COB and guess what...NoThInG! There are rush parties at my school now and I am not even sure if I want to join, I just want to go to the parties and have them all girls be nice to me because I know they have to, well at least the ones who were mean to me but I do want to join or I was going to start my own. So this time what should I do? How can I get them to like me. I have decent grades (2.8) and I played intermurals last year. I also hang out at a few of the frat houses so some of the greeks may no me or maybe not. I really want to wear letters so do I have a shot?

You don't have to go to rush parties! Who told you that?

If you hang out at enough different fraternity houses and tell all the sorority women that you meet there that your whole purpose in life is to date fraternity men they will give you a bid on the spot!! I know I would if you were at my school!! :) :) :)

ETA sorry rush mods, this one was too much to resist.

Hang out with the fraternities?? No, no, you have to sleep with them! If you do that, you're a shoe-in to the very best houses even if you're a second-semester senior who's rushed 14 times before. :p

OK now here's my serious answer, if you are serious.

Have you ever had anyone want to be friends with you because of a guy you knew, or the car you drove, or the house you lived in? Did you like it very much? If this hasn't ever happened, would you want to be friends with a person who does this?

If the only reason you want to be in a sorority is to date a fraternity (it's fraternity not frat by the way - frat is a very offensive word to many people) member, and not to have any kind of relationship with the sisters or give anything to the sorority, you won't be receiving a bid any time soon.

xplpx16 09-20-2005 01:22 AM

C'mon... you really don't have to be tease her. I don't think she understands. You need to do some research. You need to learn what greek life is really about before making the decision to join a sorority. Don't join to try and be popular, don't join to get invited to parties, don't join to date fraternity guys. Join because you want friends you'll have for the rest of your life, join to be a part of years of tradition and ritual, join to serve your community, join to fall in love... not with a guy, but with an organization that will change your life. Remember dear, guys will come and go, the decision to join a soroity is something that stays with you for your entire life. If you still think greek life is right fot you, I suggest you go through recruitment or go to COR's (COB's... whatever) one more time and this time tell the sorority women you meet that you didn't know what it was all about before, ask them questions about what greek life is all about and about the history and ideals of their praticular organization. Most of them aren't being nice just because they have to, they are all people too, most of them really are being nice and not putting up a front. Just think, they were in your shoes once and they know what it feels like. Hope I helped and good luck!

daisy625 09-20-2005 01:59 AM

Both guys & girls see past any sort of facade to your true intentions pretty quickly (especially if you have a drink in your hand). Don't cloud your desire to be a member of a sorority with a desire to be popular/get dates. (& don't take it as a bad thing, a lot of freshman guys/girls actually misperceive this)

Imagine how you would feel if all your friends were only around because they thought you had good parties & knew the cute guys. Well, if you got those 'friends' of yours into a room with all those cute boys.. why would they want to spend time with you anymore? The girls met the guys and thats all they wanted. See what I mean?

When you use people, once you acheive your purpose/goal, you forget about them. Would it feel good to you if someone forgot about you like that? Just think about your true intentions. If you are using a sorority for social leverage (key word: using) then it's probably a good idea to chill out for a year and really wonder if it is what you want.

A lot of younger girls actually have this problem with perceiving what a sorority actually is. All they know is Pledged with Paris Hilton or rumors that run around high schools/freshman dorms. They look up to the letters and think of sororities/fraternities almost like little nightclubs. Events, theme parties, the boys from next door, drinks here & there.

A sorority is much more about the girls you make relationships with, the girls you live with, cook with, laugh with, go to movies with, plan activities with.. you name it. sororities have weekends where they go on retreats (thats right.. all girls vacation for like 48-72 hours) and so many other things too. meetings to keep up with, dues, etc.

Anyway.. bottom line is.. you don't need a sorority to party. So if you find out that is what makes you happy, then go for it. The guys will Love your enthusiasm. lol. just be careful. theres this little thing called social balance you might want to keep in mind (while having fun of course).

James 09-20-2005 02:14 AM

If you are good looking and personable you should have no problem with Rush . . .regardless of your reasons . . but you may not want to share them :)

Unregistered- 09-20-2005 06:39 AM

If you want to date the frat boy, you don't need a sorority as long as you put out and are willing to be a skanky hoebag.

Loving this thread!

Do you have a sister in real life? Is she nice to you? If you do, now imagine that times 70. Just because you're a member, does mean anyone HAS TO be nice to you. Remember all that hazing I'm sure you heard about? Does that seem nice? Not saying that anyone now hazes, but it just goes to show that being nice to your sisters is not a requirement...(It is courtious, however.... love you Shelia!)

AXi1257 09-20-2005 08:56 AM

I would like popcorn too...and a coke. No pref on the kind of popcorn...this is gonna be good!

Is this a Real question or just a joke...I just got done working a night shift for 13 hours so I don't know which end is up!

Denise_DPhiE 09-20-2005 09:12 AM

Move over....I'll take some popcorn too.

Nobody tagged onto this part "but I do want to join or I was going to start my own"

Oh, please start your own. Hmmm. What to call it?

You could call it Delta Upsilon Mu Beta

I think this thread is a gag. Surely, NOBODY is that superficial?

Edited to spell the sorority correctly. Sorry, I didn't have my coffee yet. :D

Hey, that's the ONLY way to go!

I have some cheese popcorn, if anyone wants some. That and some dried apricots.

Well, the apricots will certainly help counteract all that popcorn. ;)

aephi alum 09-20-2005 10:15 AM

I'll take some popcorn. Too bad it's only 10:15am, or I'd make margaritas...

Seriously: There is so much more to being in a sorority than wearing letters and going to parties and dating frat [sic] guys. But if that is all you want out of sorority life, and you are not willing to put anything into a sorority, then I'd say, no, you don't have a shot.

Re: want to rush

There is no restriction on dating fraternity men. Greek and non-Greek women have a fair shot. So ... maybe he's just not that into you. Or you have been grossly mis-informed.

I rushed last year and didn't get a bid so I went to COB and guess what...NoThInG!
If you've been through one formal recruitment and one COB with no positive results, than seek out another collegiate activity. You are going to continue to be declined membership--- you are rushing the same groups with the same members who declined you before. It's like going for the same job at the same company multiple times and being turned away. If you aren't a "fit" with the membership, you will not be offered a bid, regardless of how great and stellar your resume might be.

There are rush parties at my school now and I am not even sure if I want to join, I just want to go to the parties and have them all girls be nice to me because I know they have to, well at least the ones who were mean to me but I do want to join or I was going to start my own.
Feel free to attend recruitment events, but it sounds that you are doing it for the wrong reasons. It sounds as though you aren't interested in joining a sorority anyway. Also, be warned that starting your own sorority is a lot of work. Talk to the campus Greek Adviser. There are standards to maintain, you must register as a campus organization, maintain a certain number of members, etc.

So this time what should I do? How can I get them to like me.
Honestly? Don't go back to recruitment. Find another activity. You'll get them to like you by not trash-talking how they have to be nice to you at events--- befriend them in classes, join campus organizations... there are bound to be sorority women at these groups who will get to see the real you.

I have decent grades (2.8) and I played intermurals last year. I also hang out at a few of the frat houses so some of the greeks may no me or maybe not. I really want to wear letters so do I have a shot?
A 2.8 would not be considered a competitive GPA at recruitment and this could be one of the reasons you were cut before. Sports are great! Keep playing sports!!! This is a great way to make friends. And if you have fraternity friends, then yes, you are known in the Greek System. You say you want to wear letters, but you have not identified any solid reason as to why-- except as a status symbol. This is not why women join sororities. They join for friendship, shared interest in service and socialization and committment to academic excellence. I advise you to get involved in other campus groups, raise your GPA and take your attention away from Greek Life. And if you really want to wear letters, ask one of your fraternity friends to borrow a Rush Shirt.

Good luck... although as others have stated in their posts, your post does not feel at all legitimate. If you've rushed twice, than you should understand the mission of sorority life and know it is more than letters and boys.
