Looks Like Texas' Number Is Up

http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/storm_graphi...151209W_sm.gif

While its 5 days away, the H on the Texas coast is exactly 30 miles due south of my family's home. If it makes landfall there as a strong cat 3 or higher, their house is toast.

Lindz928 09-19-2005 11:57 AM

Wow. I hope your family will be alright.

Looks like it would catch a little bit of Austin too.

Do you have a link for that?

DeltAlum 09-19-2005 01:25 PM

Let's hope it takes a left. Neither TX or LA needs this.

You are so right. It would be awful for it to hit Houston.... There are SO many evacuees still there. I would hate for them to have to go through this again.

I remember the really bad flooding in Houston a few years ago.... Anyone know how much danger there would really be from it?

I'm not sure if I'm reading that map right.... Is it saying that it might hit Houston this weekend? I'm definately supposed to be there this weekend.....

DeltAlum 09-19-2005 01:38 PM

One of my best friends is in Houston working logistics for CBS News...

Highly unlikely it'll take a left - the rotation of the earth and the upper level steering currents will eventually cause it to turn right. Depending on the upper-level high pressure system that's over Texas, it'll influence Rita's steering in the next few days.

You are indeed reading the map correctly. The line (but they want you to focus on the whole area, not just the dotted line - as it could go anywhere).

As it reads now, it passes right over my family's house there in Sugar Land. If the track holds true, I am sure I will have a full house come Friday with my sister, nephew and mother. (Brother in law will have to stay in Houston and work - hes a cop).

Its from noaa.gov.

ADPiZXalum 09-19-2005 05:22 PM

If it turns to the left any, my house will get hit pretty hard. I'm glad hurricanes don't usually hit Montreal.

Lindz928 09-19-2005 05:25 PM

I wonder what the chances are of my Dr. boy having to evacuate to my apartment in Austin.... Hmm.... Probably slim to none. :p

I do have friends (well, an ex) who live in Sugarland. I hope they are keeping an eye on this.

carnation 09-19-2005 05:30 PM

Aiiiiiii. My sister and uncle and aunt are in Sugarland, most of the other relatives are in the Houston and Brenham areas....

Hard Left.

I think it is possible for the storm to change paths.. just last night they projected it making landfall around Corpus Christi... so I guess anything is possible.

I hope everyone stays safe though.

Yeah, my family is in Sugar Land.

As a family, we are going to make a decision on what to do on Wednesady. My sister said everyone in Houston was freaking the PHUCK out. So here’s how it breaks down for me and my family.

In the next 24 hours my brother in law will need to make some decisions (cause he’s the one in charge there), which will guide what we do. All Houston police have to work their regular shifts plus overtime, which is 40 hours per week regular and 20 Hours at the shelters. Tomorrow (Tuesday) he is working 8Am to 2AM. He on Wednesday is working 10Am to 2AM. He clearly wont have time to take care of the house and the family. On Wednesday morning, he’s gonna go to Lowes and try to get Plywood and Screws. If he can’t (or it's unavailable) he’s going to let me know and I’ll get it all here in San Antonio and throw it in the back of my truck and drive to Houston (a three hour drive). I’ll help my sister secure the House (again, they only live 30 miles from the coast so It’ll be lifesaver with the circular saw and drill) by boarding up the windows, draining the pool halfway, etc. We’ll load up the Tahoe of their important, non replaceable items and at the same time, do the same for my moms place. (She’s in an apartment, so we wont be boarding windows, but we’ll be loading up the non-replaceable items in my truck and I’ll drive her to San Antonio as my sister and my nephew follow). We will hopefully leave Houston sometime on Thursday. If a lot of other people are leaving at the same time, it will take us forever to get to SA. During the peak evac of Ivan and Katrina, the drive to Houston on I-10 was about 18 Hours of what is a normally 6-8 hour drive. I imagine the drive from Houston to SA will be similar. There are plenty of alternate routes we can take. 290/183 to Austin, to 35 to SA or 59 Outta Houston to the SW to Beeville and then I-37 North to SA., but I wont do I-10 if it’s a cluster phuck. It’s a 3 hour drive that I can easily see turning into a 10 hour ordeal. No me gusto.

My sis will be bringing the cats, so I have found a place here locally to board them. If Freeport takes a direct hit, then they will be here for a week or two because they will have no electricity. It took a week to get the lights back on in some parts of Hattiesburg, MS, and they were two hours north of NOLA after Katrina. So I imagine the family will be with me for a week or so. My sis wont go back to Houston with the nephew (who is 4) if there is no power (she wont have to work anyway). She wont be out of any cash, because both her and her husband work for the govm’t (she’s a teacher) and they will still get paid. I have enough in savings tho to cover them all in food and gasoline and such. All my friends have already offered to host dinner different nights that they are here and this weekend there is a wedding that I had already asked my sister as my date (it’s a mutual friend) and they have extended the invite to my mom and nephew.

If the brother in law doesn’t need the plywood, then on Wednesday I’ll just grab a Southworst flight to Hobby (Houston) and we’ll drive mom’s old ass Volvo instead of my truck to SA with the sister and nephew in convoy. I have a three bedroom Condo that only has a bed in one of the guest rooms (besides the master where I sleep). I’ll go to Foley's and buy a new bed for the empty room. I don’t want anyone on the futon downstairs. Its not real comfortable and the downstairs is real bright in the AM. No one can sleep down there.

My mom can take the time off work (they’ll give it to her anyway) and the sister can get the time too. They don’t wanna stay there even if it is only a cat 1 or 2 because there are a lot of trees around their property and my sister doesn’t want my nephew asleep in a bed and then a tree falls through the roof into his bedroom.

This is just kinda wigging me out. I’m the youngest child and I’ve never had to be the one who has to ‘have the plan’ and tell everyone what needs to happen. But they are my family and I have to take care of them. I have had a pretty good month professionally, so I can afford to do so. My sister will probably fight me on expenses tho, but whatever. She is better off than my mom. I’ve already had to reassure my mom that this whole deal is on me and that she needs to be realistic about her situation. I want her to understand that the likelihood of her loosing anything/everything is small, but that’s what everyone in NOLA thought too, but you still have to prepare. I told her to prepare to take what she couldn’t replace. I told her to pretend that she knew a house fire was coming and she had a few days notice and that she needed to make a list of what she wanted to rescue if she had the chance – cause while I was there I wouldn’t have the time to help her make decisions. Now Is the time for her to do so. I also calmed her down by telling her that the likelihood of her loosing everything was slim and that unlike tornadoes, we have advance warning for Hurricanes (its all of our first one). I reminded her that she lives in an area that is 70 feet above sea level and she’s nowhere near a creek/river, so flooding wont be an issue. Her biggest worry will be the hurricane force winds and/or tornadoes. But again, she has the insurance, so what she loses, we can replace.

Its just going to be an adventure. We’ll know by Wednesday AM where this thing is going to go. If it looks like Beaumont/Port Arthur, or the victora area, then they might ride it out there. If not, then I am on my way and I’ll probably have some guests for a time. Since I own my own company, I’ll put them all to work while they are here. I’ll pay them for their time, but I have no problem offering them both positions. (I’ll probably have my mom do my filing an office work (she’s a genius at that and can watch the nephew and lord knows I can use the help) and my sister can go out on accounts and marketing – if she wants to.)

I’ll keep ya’ll up to date.

I'm glad you have a plan. That's really awesome and shows that your family works as a really cooperative unit. I can only hope that I raise my kids that well!

*sings* Texas has a hurricane in it, lord of mercy on it soul

Honeykiss1974 09-20-2005 09:35 AM

I'm praying for you Lifesaveer and everyone else in the path of this storm. :( Houston is already housing evacuees so its resources (ie shelters) are already maxed.

I just can't believe that the expectation is for this to become another Cat. 4 storm (even though it has a high probablity of happening since its traveling over the Gulf).

Lindz928 09-20-2005 09:37 AM

I'm trying to keep in mind that this storm isn't even a hurricane yet. The news his morning said the winds are still holding around 70mph.

They also said that it's looking to be a category 1 or 2 when it gets to Texas.

Do ya'll think that people are expecting another Katrina, only this time in Texas? Honestly, that seems to be the reaction that I am seeing. But, maybe I'm wrong. Better safe than sorry I am sure.

They are saying around here that it could be a big huge mess for the ACL festival that is here this weekend. LOTS of rain and 40-60 mph winds doesn't spell good news for an outdoor music festival. Kinda makes me glad that I'm not planning on going anymore.

It is looking like maybe I should cancel the Houston trip this weekend. :(

Kevlar281 09-20-2005 09:37 AM

Well my father has been recalled from Madrid to help with rig evacuations and maneuvers . If yall thought gas prices were high now, just imagine what will happen if Texas City gets knocked out.

See thats what sucks with these things. Intensity forecasts are the hardest part of hurricane prediction. Track prediction is more accurate. CNN is reporting an anticipated landfall at Cat 3. The lack in ability to accurately predict intensity is what worries me tho. Example - Hurricane Charley last year. It went from a Cat 1 to a Cat 4 in a twleve hour time period immediately before landfall. 6 hours before landfall when it was apparent that it was rapidly intesifiying was too late to evacuate or begin/complete preparedness plans.

Unless the thing continues to curve down the coast and head towards Corpus, were not takign any chances. As the forcast map now reads, the slighest wobble (and they do wobble, like a top) woudl put it over the family's house.

Family does seem to be a bit more relaxed today. I think having aplan makes all the difference.

Definately a good idea.

ADPiZXalum 09-20-2005 07:24 PM

Ahhhh the parents are boarding up and getting ready to evacuate if necessary. This stinks.....I don't want anywhere to get hit, but I really dont' want my home to get hit either! Maybe it'll head to Mexico....that'd be cool.

AKA_Monet 09-20-2005 09:18 PM

This just sucks...

Yeah Rita is gonna havta be biatch and come in to all this H.A.M.

But Phillippe might be the one to watch because he/she is bigger and is following right along with Rita... However, the winds may steer it in another direction...

Exquisite5 09-20-2005 10:05 PM

Rita is on the move. She is now a hurricane, in fact she is a Cat 2 and all indicators suggest she will strenghten tonigh, some expect she will reach a Cat 4.

I am a native Houstonian and my city can't take this! TS Allison flooded the city and that was just a TS. I wouldn't wish a hurricane on anyone, but doesn't the Mexican desert need water? :) Please Rita, go there!

They have started evacuating the New Orleans evacuees to Arkansas, I am praying for my family, friends and property, but also for the NO evacuees- can you imagine going through this twice?

DeltAlum 09-20-2005 10:25 PM

When I talked to him this morning, my friend who is working for CBS News temporarily in Houston was planning on bringing back emergency generators and buying lots of food and water, etc. for the CBS crews there.

Exquisite5 09-20-2005 10:51 PM

Help! Please pray that my father be given better discernment. He has informed my mother and brother that they should leave Houston, but he is not going anywhere.

Why I ask you, WHY?????? I sooooooooooooooooo don't want him to become a statistic.

Does anyone have any suggestion for when I talk to him and try to convince him to evacuate? If you're wondering about me, I am in law school in DC so I am far far away.

lifesaver 09-21-2005 02:55 AM

For a scary read....

Its the Houston equivilent of what happened to NOLA. Hope it (the story) is just a worse case scenario - and doesn't happen.

Everyone PLEASE be safe! Exquisite say whatever its takes (I like was AGDee posted) to get your dad to move his behind to a safe place.

Still praying for everyone.

tinydancer 09-21-2005 08:50 AM

All those who have family in the Houston/Galveston/coast area, keep us informed about what is going on.

Sending good thoughts your way.

Lindz928 09-21-2005 09:39 AM

I heard that they may have a forced evacuation from Houston and Galveston.... Exquisite5, maybe that will make him realize that this might be worse than he is expecting. I hope he does!

My trip to Houston is officially off for this weekend. Looks like I'm going to do College Station this weekend, then hopefully Houston next weekend. My best friend's parents live in Houston, and are probably going to evacuate to CS this weekend.

Other news, I talked to my jackass boy last night.... His family lives in Lake Jackson, and they are all coming to Austin to stay in his one bedroom apt for awhile. He said it looks like his hometown might get pretty much leveled.

aephi alum 09-21-2005 09:49 AM

Right now, Rita is a category 4 hurricane. It's predicted to remain at cat. 4 and make landfall on Saturday.

Stay safe, everyone. :(

Please. Amen.

At least from what I heard on the radio this morning, Texas has learned from the LA experience (or maybe they would have been this prepared anyway, but it's hard to believe) and are pre-positioning National Guard, Public Safety officers, aircraft, Federal Food and Ice and are executing "phased" evacuations to help with traffic congestion.

We all wish the best of luck to those everywhere on the Gulf Coast.

My sister told me that everyone in Houston is in a Panic or dosent care. Theres no middle ground. Theres nothing in the grocery stores and there were already lines at the gas stations.

Also, I cant reach her on the phone and she cant get a line out. We've been chatting by IM.

BaylorBean 09-21-2005 01:46 PM

We are up in the Heights so I think we are going to ride this thing out. We got our food, water, propane stove/lantern and lots of batteries. I just hope it swings a bit more left and then I'll be less worried.

Its crazy going to the stores here. I've never seen anything like this.

AnonAlumna 09-21-2005 01:52 PM

My husband's little (Greek) bro called this morning to see if he and his wife could come and stay with us. We're in NY, they're in Richmond. He teaches in the Ft. Bend ISD, and they shut the district down. There are currently (according to the Weather Channel) mandatory evacs for Galveston/Tiki Island...and it'll continue up towards the city through the evening.

In addition, my husband's in-laws are in Corpus Christi, where they've begun evacuating Flour Bluff and the rest of North Padre Island. My parents are in Dallas, and have invited them to stay up there. They are currently boarding up and getting the heck out! Apparently, ATM's are running out of money and my MIL thinks she needs to stay with her dogs....two chiuahuas that could easily go anywhere!

Oh and whoever mentioned Texas City and gas prices is right on! That's a VERY scary thought!

As the owner of a chihuahua, I will say that one of the BEST things about them is that you CAN take them absolutely anywhere. She REALLY should just pack them up and leave. :(

I have talked to most of my friends there, and they are heading up to Dallas today, so they will be safe.

Now just waiting to hear what Dr. boy and my best friend and her husband/family are doing. I'm getting worried about them. :(

Kevlar281 09-21-2005 03:02 PM

University of Houston is have a mandatory evacuation by 5:00 PM. The city is in chaos everyone is trying to get out. The phone networks are down. I wasn’t to worried but the panic has definitely set in. Stores are out of all essential items. I will keep yall updated the best that I can.
