Greekchat.com mention in LSU paper
(I don't think this was posted yet...sorry if it was. Anyway, get ready for some newbies!
We're called "politically correct" - wow, did the reporter read all the boards!? ;) -- Annie) http://www.tigerweekly.com/story.php?iidart=296 Greek News: Fratty computer nerds By Meredith Cranch Though it may come to a surprise, not all members of the greek community are hard-core partiers; there is a fair share of computer nerds, too. That is where greek Web sites come along. GreekChat.com and Fratty.net are two sites where members of the greek community can use the message boards to communicate with greeks all over the world. But these two Web sites are on the opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to talking about the greek communities on different campuses. GreekChat is the more formal greek message board. The message boards are broken up in several categories, including recruitment, chapter operations, and social. There are also message boards for every greek Letter Organization (GLO). They share news, social ideas, and even talk about some of the unfortunate things happening within the greek population. Most of the GreekChat message board posters are very politically correct. These message boards attract an older crowd, usually alums of their respected GLO. Posters who try to insult specific GLOs or talk bad about the greek system are lectured on why doing so is wrong. On Fratty.net, the rules are a little looser. Fratty.net is a website for greeks to make fun of themselves while attempting to make themselves look good at the same time. The home page of Fratty.net comes with a GDI (God Damn Independents—people who aren’t Greek) disclaimer. The disclaimer states, “If any of the following apply, this may not be the site for you. 1. You have bleached hair. 2. You have spiked bleached hair. 3. You are a GDI. 4. You are a GDI with spiked bleached hair. If none of these apply to you, then come in, look around, and frat hard. If you are a GDI, we encourage you to come in, look around, and take something away from this experience. However, we do not give a s**t about your criticism because if you were cool you would have pledged a frat in the first place.” To a good number of greeks, this is funny. If you think the disclaimer is harsh, check out the message board. The board is broken into four forums: Non-Specific Frat (anything that would be considered fratastic), Schools/Frats (frats at different schools), Style (yes, some greeks are concerned with this), and Sorostitutes (Sorority girls, to put it nicely). Postings vary in each of the different forums. Most of the postings dealing with actual greek life consist of GLOs rankings at different colleges, with some descriptions of the chapters that are very cruel. Needless to say, it is interesting to read. Fratty.net is not only a message board. In fact, the message board was recently added to the site. The website is made by greeks who poke fun at greek life. There are several sections of the web site that are dedicated to learning how to be “fratty” – hence the name of the website. So if you’re bored, check out these sites. If you feel like learning about the good in greek life – which there is plenty of—check out GreekChat.com. If you want a little more of the greek-in-your-face action, go to Fratty.net. They are all interesting to read, and you learn a lot about greek life all over. They are even almost as addictive as Facebook! # # # |
alright, so which one of you is writing for the LSU paper ;)?
eta: the fratty.net message boards are a train wreck. |

I was wondering when the board would be mentioned in at least some publication, although I thought it would be in a Greek org magazine.
It makes sense; I think that there's some great advice here, and it seems like a whole lot of people have been helped through this board, whether it be during rush, with chapter operations, or even on an alumni level. There's a whole lot of people at different parts of the Greek timeline (PNM, member, alumni, long-time alum, or just interested independents), so anyone is likely to get the help they need. I also think members of the board tend to be a little harsh about Greekchat; it's a great resource, and hopefully it will continue to help people in the future. |

At Convention last year we were on strict orders from our International President not to even mention "GreekChat" officially. |

I had never been to fratty.net before... wow. That's... wow.
Why do we do things like that to ourselves? It just makes us look bad! |

At least their message boards are entertaining. I love reading about how all GLO's use coffins as part of their rituals.

I like the post from someone claiming to be an Old Miss TriDelt saying that you don't let minorities pledge. I laughed b/c there is a TriDelt chapter at my old school just chalk full of Latinas, Blacks, & Asians. These people are idiots but good for an occasional laugh. The sad thing is, I just bet there is some idiot out there taking all that nonsense as gospel.
|
Oh. My. Gosh.
So, I went over to check out the message boards on fratty.net that everyone is talking about in this thread, and what did I see? A user by the name of Kristin **********. |
WOW, I guess I am impressed. I think?
"The Biggest % is Alums"? Where in the hell did that come from and who thinks they know? Well, just look at the count of People, Not Members who have signed onto to GC. Many do and dont post. Well, maybe We are becoming Notorious, Infamous or Semi-Well K-Nown!;) Bouy, I might nerd to check on that other site? |

The things that they say about southern sorority girls is true. Sorry. Yes, I said it. As I'm sitting here in my Polo button-down, Ralph Lauren Jeans, Rainbows, and pearl earrings. Seriously. And I think that's why all of us southerners got into it faster. One of my ZTA friends is the one who introduced me to the board. I was laughing my butt off, because a lot of the stuff related to her (Lexus SUV... Fratty!) and then I realized that a lot of it was about me as well. I don't think it's about not thinking that highly about ourselves, rather being able to laugh at ourselves. Granted, some of the shacking stuff is a little degrading, but I mean, that stuff's not untrue, either. OK... Go ahead... Rip me apart. |

Just didn't seem like a site where I'd feel comfortable posting. To be fair, though, I guess it would be a resource for anyone who wanted to argue at great length about the social rankings of Greeks at a relatively few mainly southern schools. |
This site is a lot better, we have all the good topics, even the risque ones, without the idiots.
I am surprised anyone bothers to try, the few posters that mean well are overwhelmed by the . . . idiot posters. |

I don't have much of a problem with the site itself, I think it's funny. But I have a problem with the message boards that lets that sort of crap go on and can't believe people think it's okay. You can't separate the racist and sexually demeaning stuff going on there from the tongue-in-cheek humor. Give me PC any day if it means not having to put up with that kind of crap. |
I never knew what a "gelhead" was until I visited Fratty.net. LOL
