Greetings!
Greetings to you my brother! Wanted to ask you about something that seems neat about Alpha Phi Omega and Rust College. According to http://www.blackmississippi.com/biog...l?id=86&page=1 . Dr David Beckley, the president of Rust College is in Alpha Phi Omega. He attended Rust College (great to see a student coming home as university president) from 1964-1967. Did you know him?

Yo Vike!
Just bumping this thread to make my presence known. I went over Spring 92' @ Psi Lambda and I remember my days on the campus at Rust. Just a bit more trivia for you on A Phi Q and the Rust Administrative Staff. In my days at Rust most of the male staff there was all APO brothers. We were one of the last 'Old Charter' Chapters in the state, mostly due to the fact other chapters had gone under mandatory 2 and 4 year shut downs for hazing and when they got reinstated they were forced to come back under the new charter of co-ed. But any who, the president of the college Dr. McMillan, the next President Dr. Beckley, the dean of education Mr. Edwards, the business manager, the director of food services, the chairman of the humanities department, the director of the radio and television department, the program director, the head of the athletic department, about 50% of the male teachers and various support staff where all brothers of APO. And the killer was not only were we the only organization allowed on campus to have both a fall and spring line, but we also had our own den under the admin building. That's right we had our own place of refuge, place to meet and not be disturbed right under the seat of power. Unfortunately, I know times change and I have no idea who things are on campus now for the brothers, but I know when I was there, we enjoyed and VERY privileged existence. Don't get me wrong, we did outstanding work in the community, but as they say, membership has it's privileges. BTW, imagine to my surprise, when I decided to become a Mason that all of the previously mention men also belonged to the local lodge as well. Well imagine that ;) |
Hey bsmuv and welcome to the board! :)

I am also a Spring '92 initiate (matter of fact, today's my initiation anniversary). A lot has obviously changed in 16 years. But it was good that all the Vikes were holding it down at Rust for as long as they did. I heard a lot of good things from Rust, so I appreciate the trivia nuggets as insight. Keep posting. |
apo no more
my brothers and sisters i am sorry to say the apo on rust college does not existise any more on the campous.:(

In the words of Flava Flav "Woooooooowwwwwwww"
Gese I wonder what happened? I wonder what has become of the campus. Well I can about guess, the student enrollment when I was attending Rust was close to 3000 students. The girl out numbered the guy like 8 to 1 on the campus as evident by the three massive girls dorms and two auxiliary buildings they were using to house the girls to the two tiny dorms for the guys. I mean in one of the dorms that was built to only house two to a room they had squeezed three to a room and in another dorm they were using the flipping basement. From what I understand now, student enrollment is like well under 700 students total. Kind of sad if you ask me. But hey maybe it's just that college has become too expensive to attend now a days and folks just ain't prepared. Then again, maybe it's because Rust isn't that hot shit of an HBCU anymore. A sad day in any case to find out your chapter no longer exists. |
