Sigma Kappa
What does everyone think of Sigma Kappa? Are they big on your campuses or small?? Are they popular, pretty, smart, or just there? Any opinions will be appreciated.
|
At my school, which had a very large Greek system, Sigma Kappa was about average. They weren't lumped together with the big, popular sororities (Kappas, Tri-Delts, Thetas), but I guess they were OK.
I knew quite a few Sigma Kappas at another large university, and it seemed to me that they were pretty good. They were one of the largest chapters on their campus, I know that. I guess it just depends on the school. I don't know for sure if any sororities (or fraternities) are uniformly popular across the country. |
Alumnus is correct - there is no uniform standard you can apply towards any fraternity or sorority. Each chapter on each campus will be different. The best thing is to go through Recruitment with an open mind and make the decision that is best for you.
At my 'home' campus, the Sigma Kappa chapter had only 7 members the year I pledged. Years later they are the second largest group on campus (close to 60 members). Chapters and the types of women in them change through the years - you can't base your opinions on hearsay. See the Alumnae Panhellenic Sorority Rush FAQ page for additional information. PnguinTrax,
Just curious, is that penguin pic there for any reason? Is it computer related? (Linux?) http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif Just wondering http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif ------------------ D.D.? - Designated Driver ? |

It's there because I like pengys, I had the GIF and because I could <grin> Barb |
The Sigma Kappas at my school are a bunch of snotty brats. I mean some of the girls are really nice, but some are downright rude. My sorority pretty much gets along with every other organization on campus, however how can we be expected to get along with girls who make no similar effort?

Snotty Brats!?!
All right, what'd they do? Personally I've only met one SK chapter that made me cringe. Basically they were like the stereotype of a sorority. Other than them, the ones I've met have been very nice and usually known for being the most down to earth chapter on thier campus. Also, I hear that they are most often the most diverse for thier campus. So my overall opinion of SK (with the exception of the one chapter) would be that they're basically "the girl next door". But go through rush and go with your heart. I've watched chapters go from major powerhouses in size to barely nothing and back again; so if the size of the chapter bothers you there's no guarantee that the large ones will stay that way. |
Oh dear, I have to back up Amber....this snobby chick from my high school was a SK at Lock Haven! As soon as I saw her w/ her letters on, my opinion of SK went from "who?" to "UGH!"
But of course, that's only one school. I have heard, also, that they pride themselves on diversity. |
33girl,
Re: the diversity thing, SK was the first NPC to pledge a non-caucasian woman, Barbara Delany in 1956 at Cornell U. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif |
Sigma Kappa closed on my campus, LSU, with less than 30 members while everyone else was above 140. They were also last in grades every semester.
|
From what I know if the Sigma Kappa's they really are pretty much the girl next door type. The girls I know that are SKs however are some of the sweetest and most down to earth girls I have met in a sorority as a whole. On this particular campus they are not up there with the larger more recognised chapters but they hold their own and know how to have a good time and keep their chapter active and busy. They seem like a very united chapter.

Hi,
I just wanted to say that I think Sigma's are fantastic. True, we're not lumped in with th big dogs- Tri Delt's, DG's, and Kappa's but the sorority experience is what you make of it and I can say that being a Sigma Kappa in college has been such a wonderful experience. Just follow your heart and you'll end up the sorority that is best suited for you. Good luck- A Sigma Kappa |
Sigma Kappa is awesome! My campus has a very small Greek network (only 7% of the students go Greek, and I was not at all sure if Greek was for me. However, I found the girls at Sigma Kappa to be down-to-earth, funny, sweet, nice, and basically the most wonderful people that I can now call my sisters....
Beta rockin' Eta, Baby!! -A Sigma Kappa |
at penn state sororities live on floors of dorm building but sometimes they can't fill the whole floor so independents share with them. I lived with sigma krappa and they were so rude. They never even made an attempt to talk to us or even look us in the eye for that matter.

One of my very best high school friends ("Jane") became a Sigma Kappa, and the next year they were kicked off campus...how stupid is this?
The fall pledge class included a pledge whose sister ("real" sister) worked for Sigma Kappa nationals. The sisters hazed them including making them smoke pot and sleep in coffins! Needless to say the girl called her sister and in the middle of the night nationals moved in like the marines! I was attending the school at this point and was staying on the floor right underneath (we have sorority halls - not houses) - it sounded like all out warfare! The sisters were throwing stuff at the people, hitting them with baseball bats, etc. and the poor pledge had to be escorted out by the cops. I asked my friend "Jane" about it afterwards and she said that none of them knew where the girl was, and the only thing they were told is she would be sent to a new school paid for by SK money. It was a really bad experience for greek life as a whole! After that everyone started cracking down on the hazing rules...its sad because it really gave the rest of us a bad name! |
Sigma Kappa at UGA is alright. They aren't on top, but what I like about them is that they are more laid back.
|
I just read the message about the gril whose friend was being hazed by the Sigma Kappas at her school and must say the response she reported our national chapter gave, made me extremely proud to be a Sigma Kappa. We do not believe in hazing at any level and to hear that They were given such a strong response made me so proud. As for the Sigma Kappa chapter on my campus in my four years in the chapter we have been the largest- the second largest and the third largest. there are only four chapters at my school so we are all very simiiar in size. However in this case SIZE DOESN'T MATTER. As people have already reported Sigma Kappas are the most down to earth-gril next door type. These are the members that you could trust and turn to--they will not stab you in the back, they will not put on false airs, they will not be fake. At my school Sigma Kappa are the most respected chapter by non-greeks, fraternity members, as well as faculty members. We take pride in our reputation as well as in ourselves. We however still can party and have a great time! All in all at my school Sigma Kappas are by far the best!

i personally don't like the SK chapter at my school (Univ. of Hartford)
they're snotty, uppity, bratty and pretty much vapant. the girls that i've been in contact with are all your typical sorority girls, with the black puffy jacket, black pants, sunglasses in wintertime with thier cell phone in one hand and thier kate spade handbag in the other. thier nickname on our campus is sigma jap-pa and with good reason. many are jewish (which i have NO problem with, PLEASE don't think i'm being religiously biased...it's just a fact) and are very jap-py...flaunting thier money. the ones that have been in classes with me haven't been that bright, either. they're either fawned all over the TKE's that are in the class, or just haven't shown up at all. i know this is harsh, but you know what? here, it's true. as i read about the "girl next door" posts, i had this look on my face like "huh" sigma KAPPA? are we talking about the SAME sigma kappa?" sorry, but those chicks just don't do it for me here. etienne ------------------ "red is the color of music and has been since the very earliest of times. the caps of faeries and musicians are well-nigh always red."~*~w.b.yeats |
Heh, I guess every chapter is different no matter where you go. I know the Sigma Kappas at my school, and they are definitely considered the wilder bunch. They march to their own beat which I think is great, but as for their reputation, it's not at the top of list. As you can see, I'm not going to get into specifics because that's not my business to spread rumors. However, they are as harmless as they come, but certainly don't match up to any of the descriptions given above.

I was just wondering why Cyan2000 was interested in knowing Sigma Kappa's rep. I browsed your webpage to find out you were a guy and it just made me curious. To give my input, Sigma Kappa is larger on some campuses than others, just as the other posts report. I would have to agree with most of the posts.
A proud SigKap |
OOPS...
I didn't finish what I wanted to say. I agree with most of the posts that claim that we tend to be the more of the girl next door type. Thank you for all of the positive feedback on Sigma Kapp. |
Where are all of the Sigma Kappa's at?
Hey Sigmagrrl... How are the Sigma Kappas up there at RIU? (just curious)... LIS |
The University of Iowa does not have Sigma Kappa... and prior to me getting involved with greekdom.. I hadn't heard of them...
|
IowaHawkeye...
I know that we are not at the U of I, but we are at ISU...but thanks anyway. |
Actually, I am a Tri Sigma, not a Sigma Kappa. I do not know any SK's. Are they at URI? I didn't go there...
|
We have Sigma Kappa at University of North Carolina at Charlotte. They are thought well of here. One of my friends is a member, she graduated in '97, and at that time they were going strong.
|
Hey,
That's wonderful to hear. It seems as though they are thought of well there. In fact, I was going to go to school there, but chose to come to the U of A. Thanks for the info. |
Sigmagrrl,
I meant to say URI not RIU. Is that where you are, URI? I'm almost positive we are there. |
URI does have a chapter of Sigma Kappa, but my favorite chapter would have to be at UMass!!!
(I may be a bit biased...heehee) |

Kelliebeans,
Are you at UMass or did you go there? I take it you are a Sigma Kappa? How is the chapter there? I'm at the University of Arizona |
Ok, I'm a Sigma Kappa and on my campus, we are def known as the most down to earth, funniest, and diverse sororities. I have friends in every sorority and we do our best to support every greek oranization. We are one of the largest sororities on campus.
Sigma K, all the way! |
Where are all of the Sigma Kappas at?
|
SoCal and 33Grl...
Which GLO do you guys belong to? Just curious. |

I am a junior at UMass, and I am also a member of Sigma Kappa. I am not mean, snobby, ugly, fat, slutty or any of the other traits that some people on this board seem to think are fitting of Sigma Kappa's. My chapter does not haze, we are close to our national officers and have won numerous high awards in the Greek system. We have the highest GPA on our campus, My sisters are the most talented and beautiful people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. If there are some individuals out there that have tarnished your image of Sigma Kappa please try to remember that none of us are perfect, and that every sorority in the world has a few problem members or policies. We are striving all together as a Greek system to better ourselves, right??

Well said. LIS |
Hey everyone, my best friend is a Sigma Kappa at ASU, arizona state university. She was kind of having a hard time deciding between SK and ADPi but she finally came to the conclusion that she felt more at home with SK. Are there any SK's from ASU in here?
|
At URI the chapter is kind of seen in different light depending who you ask...to me they seem pretty girl next door, but definitely have the party girl reputation from some and I hear hazing rumors all the time. Again those are just RUMORS.
They have been at URI a very long time. In fact my boyfriends Mom was one in the 60's. [This message has been edited by coffeemug (edited November 19, 2000).] |
Agree with the University of Hartford reply. They are known at UHA as rejects who didn't get into Aephi or SDT. They are also known for stalking the baseball and lacrosse teams inaddition to TKE.
