What is your GLO doing to help Katrina victims?
Hi All,
I know that many of us probably have collegiate and alumnae chapters in the areas hit by Hurricane Katrina, and was wondering if any of your National HQ (or your chapter on a local level) have devised a way to help brothers and sisters affected by the disaster? Please tell us what your GLO is doing to help. Maybe it will give others ideas. :) Thanks, dzrose93 |
http://www.deltagamma.org/anchor_grants.shtml
Anchor Grants are for sisters in dire financial need. Hopefully many sisters will contribute and raise money for our sisters in need! |
Each woman in my chapter is making a $25 donation to the Red Cross disaster relief fund.
|
The APO national home page has links to places to donate and ways to help, and a list of service project ideas for individual chapters.
There's also a lot of talk about ways to help on APO-L. |
Nothing official yet, but I've sent emails to sisters and posted on our yahoo group about the Humane Society needing donations. I'm hoping HQ will come up with something official soon :) I'd love to know if sisters are in need so I can help
|
Check LXA Thead, it has all of the GLOs pssible you can contact! Check anything tha lifesaver Posted.
Can a MOD Please merger these? They are well meaning!:) |
I just received an e-mail from my chapter president that our region is in the process of collecting funds for our members who have been affected. We have set up an account to donate funds.
|
Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc's International President has released a statement urging members to contribute to the relief efforts. Statement
Our Southern Region has released information advising members to volunteer and contribute in any way. My state, Illinois, is taking donations for the children affected. |
Phi Sigma sigma has had a Twin Ideals disaster relief fund for a while now - it was used after 9/11 and earlier this year after the Tsunami. our Foundation has sent a notice that the funds designated to this will now go to those affected by the hurricane.
AFAIK though the funds will be donated to the Red Cross and not to just our sisters. |
phi mu has a heart and hand fund which provides help to sisters and their families who have been affected by natural disasters. this fund has existed for several years.

Kathleen Babineaux Blano, the Governor of Lousiana is a Kappa Delta. These pieces of news are on our national website, www.kappadelta.org:
Gov. Calls for Prayer Hurricane Katrina Update No organization-wide relief effort yet, but I'm sure individual chapters are doing their own thing. |
Chapter Websites
On a local level, webmasters of chapter sites can also put a message and a link to redcross to donate. The easiest link is:
https://www.redcross.org/donate/donation-form.asp If you are a webmaster or can easily get in contact with your webmaster I highly recommend it. |
www.fraternalrelief.org
This website was created by Lambda Chi Alpha (http://www.lambdachi.org) in an effort to better coordinate Hurricane Katrina relief efforts for all fraternal organizations. (This just got started so there is very little information there) Check it out. I got this info from my online alumni chapter. |
Iota Phi Theta Responds
|
DZ has an online alumnae chapter called Surfing Sisters, and I just learned today that the exec board has made a $500 donation to the Red Cross earmarked for Katrina relief. :)
We're waiting to find out what our national HQ is going to do. Right now, we've been advised to give directly to reputable charities that are set up to help hurricane victims. (Usually, we would make donations through our DZ Foundation and they would total everything up and send it to a charity. However, because it takes a while to send things through Foundation and have it go out again, our HQ has instructed us to just give directly to the charities themselves so that people get the aid more quickly.) |

FraternalRelief.org, not only for Lambda Chi Alpha - it is growing day by day.
This website will give you specific GLO links to directly affected chapters and let you know what's going on. For example, there are posts for LXA about the many chapters affected (looks like at least two are complete write-offs), but the good news is all members have been accounted for, so they are all alive and well. Scattered across the region with friends, family, evac centers, etc...but OK. That's the most important factor, isn't it? Most have lost everything they own, but they have their lives. There are also some harrowing stories from specific members about the chapter houses, New Orleans, etc..... |
From the AXO Press Release website:

This is what Alpha Gamma Delta has posted on our website:
Update on Hurricane Katrina On behalf of International Council, the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation, International Headquarters staff and members of Alpha Gamma Delta everywhere, our thoughts and prayers are with all individuals who have been impacted by the destruction of Hurricane Katrina. Although the Fraternity currently does not have any collegiate chapters in Louisiana or Mississippi, damage reports have come in from three chapters located in Alabama, another area hit hard by this devastating storm. Theta Epsilon - University of South Alabama in Mobile reports that the women are safe and managing. The campus was not hit by the storm as intensely as downtown Mobile (10 miles away), which has flood water surpassing the street lights. The campus has been closed and is not planning to re-open for a minimum of two weeks. Psi - University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa reports that several homes and businesses have been damaged and that wind has uprooted trees. The women are safe and the chapter house appears to be intact. Gamma Sigma - Troy University in Troy reports that the chapter members are safe despite some wind damage in the area. Our hearts go out to our members and NPC friends who have been displaced from their communities. Continuing updates will be posted on the Fraternity website as they become available. The website www.FraternalRelief.org will also be utilized to coordinate news and relief efforts. By clicking on Alpha Gamma Delta on that website’s main page, you will be taken to a special section where you can create a username and post information on the status of sisters, chapter facilities and ways that we can assist those in need. The Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation is accepting gifts in preparation for an expected increase in requests for Sisters Income Supplement (SIS) Grants due to Hurricane Katrina. If you would like to contribute to this fund, you may do so by completing the online giving form please enter SIS Program in the description field of the form. You may also make a check payable to the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation, write SIS Program in the memo field and mail it to: Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation 8701 Founders Road Indianapolis, IN 46268 It is during difficult times like this that our sisterhood should shine to help others in need and provide support and encouragement for all who have lost loved ones and their beloved communities. |
What Gamma Sig is Doing...
GSS has a chapter at Dillard University. So far I haven't heard any word on them, so we're praying all of our sisters there are okay.
In the meantime, our sisters in Houston are giving their service to those housed in the Astrodome, and there are sisters in Dallas doing the same. I have an assistant here in my department who is from New Orleans and his entire family (close to 40 people) are split up between two homes. I know I will be donating some items to them and I let my undergrad/alum chapters know. |
From AXO HQ
(Xylochick - I am PM'ing you about more info on this)
Alpha Chi Omega sisters from Loyola New Orleans University (Zeta Psi chapter) are reaching out to us. Alpha Chi Omega Headquarters is beginning to receive requests for help and assistance. Each collegian we’ve spoken to has lost all of her possessions. Women are attempting to register at other schools and relocate as we speak. Headquarters will sponsor a collegian by providing the following: · new twin size bedding—sheets, pillows, blankets · toiletries—hair care products, soaps, lotions, etc. · a gift certificate for $100 from a “big box” store of her choice · school supplies—notebooks, pens, calculator Would you like to sponsor a collegian? Approximately 80 Zeta Psis will not be returning to Loyola New Orleans this semester; if you would like, we will match your chapter with a collegian as we are contacted. If you are interested, please contact Betsy Fenn at bfenn@alphachiomega.org, Emily Hall at ehall@alphachiomega.org or me, Holly Flynn. We are also gathering contact information and requests from alumnae. Everyone we’ve talked to was evacuated; our alumnae sisters’ needs will become more clear with time. We know we have alumnae who will need similar support. Alpha Chi Omega Fraternity will work with the Foundation and with our alumnae members to assist those who may need our aid. Watching this unfold is devastating. Being part of it must seem unreal. I am glad that Alpha Chi Omega can help in some small way, sisters helping sisters. |

TO: Sigma Phi Epsilon Brothers and Friends FROM: Craig D. Templeton, Executive Director Re: Sigma Phi Epsilon Hurricane Katrina relief efforts Last year, some of our Florida chapters got hit twice with devastating hurricanes. We thought that hurricane season tested our ability to maintain a sense of normalcy and concentration on school for the students in our chapters there. That was nothing like the havoc Hurricane Katrina has wrought on the Tulane and Loyola university campuses. The Fraternity experience can play a vital role for our brothers from those campuses to keep their college and career plans on track. At this time, our attention turns to the relief effort and the displacement of our undergraduates and alumni. The Headquarters staff is working with local and district volunteers to provide support services to those affected by this tragedy. Our New Orleans chapters, through the assistance of District Governor Gary L. Huff, Central Arkansas '91, have been able to confirm that all members of SigEp undergraduate chapters are accounted for and many are moving forward swiftly with alternate plans for the fall semester. Chapters in Texas and less affected areas of Mississippi and Alabama have opened their homes as refuge for our brothers. Our reports from the Tulane and Loyola campuses indicate only minor actual damages to campus facilities, and both are on high ground presently. The universities have been able to secure campus facilities and have hired private security to secure student's personal belongings. The University of Southern Mississippi campus in Hattiesburg continues to be without power and water, though the university itself escaped serious damage. At this time Loyola and Tulane Universities are working to establish exchange programs with other colleges and universities. We are presently offering assistance to undergraduates who are transferring to other schools. The chapters on those campuses have a unique opportunity to swing open the red door to assist their displaced brothers in acclimating to their new school and affiliating with the SigEp chapters on those campuses. In some cases, the displaced brothers will only be on the alternate campus for the fall term with plans to return to their New Orleans schools when the campuses are restored. We ask for your continued help in updating the Fraternity on the whereabouts of displaced undergraduates, alumni, and volunteers. These updates can be sent to news@sigep.net. We have received many requests for how we can aid our Brothers. Support ongoing efforts to bring needed supplies, such as canned food, water, hygiene products, and paper items to local centers Support ongoing fundraising efforts. National Director Garry C. Kief, president of Stiletto Entertainment, has offered SigEp a challenge to join with the Barry Manilow Fan Club in the Red Cross relief effort with a special boost: the Manilow Fund for Health and Hope and Barry Manilow will triple any donations chapters make to the relief effort. The Manilow Fund will match $1 for every dollar raised up to $50,000, and Barry Manilow himself will also match $1 up to $50,000 (Stiletto represents Barry). So every dollar donated becomes three. All funds raised for Hurricane Katrina will be donated immediately to the Red Cross to aid in its efforts. (The Manilow Fund contributes 100% of every dollar raised. There are zero charges for administration, etc. Donations to the Manilow Fund can be made online at www.manilowfund.com or via mail at: Manilow Fund For Health and Hope PO Box 45378 Los Angeles, CA 90045 We ask that you keep our displaced Brothers and all those affected by this tragedy in your thoughts and prayers. |

Kappa Delta's philanthropy project towards the kids involved in Hurricane Katrina |
My Fraternity, Omega Psi Phi, has recently issued a statement regarding Hurricane Katrina relief efforts by Grand Basileus George Grace. We are implementing a Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund, which the chapters are supposed to contribute to through one of our non-profits. And individual brothers are encouraged to do so also. In the short-term, the Lambda Alpha Chapter House in Baton Rouge has been set up as a relief center for distriution of personal items for victims. The Fraternity IHQ has implemented an insurance counseling service for brothers affected by Katrina. I've seen reports that some relief efforts are taking place at the Rho Phi Chapter House in New Orleans.
"Que Psi Phi 'til the day I die" |
The Sigma Chi's and all the sororities at SLU are holding a fundraiser barbeque to give money to the Salvation Army to go towards the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
Also, we just had a girl move onto the ADPi floor of the Greek dorm from Loyola in New Orleans. She's not Greek, but we are so glad she's here and we've been trying to make her feel at home. |
Kappa Sigma has joined up with the American Red Cross for relief efforts:

ADPi has made an official statement on www.alphadeltapi.org, encouraging members to make donations directly to the Salvation Army and/or the Red Cross.

The Call to Action on Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia's website, which has also been sent to every e-mail address and listserv that our HQ has, asks brothers to make contributions. Links to the Red Cross, Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity and America's Second Harvest are included.
All chapters and alumni associations are also charged to hold a fund raiser and donate the proceeds. |

Since we are in the midst of recruitment and we have a booth out, we're both recruiting and collecting donations from passing students and staff members. There apparently is a jar at our booth for TRC.
I've thought about putting something on the website though. Other groups are taking collections as well and will have jars and whatnot out during homecoming week, after recruitment is complete. |
I hope the relief efforts actually receive their money. I don't want these donations going to pay for a non-Hurricane victim's rent.
This is why I will only donate through a large and well structured charity effort. I am skeptical of donation jars and individuals who are accepting donations on street corners, although every charity has the potential for scam. |

The Sorority is committed to helping victims of the storm, including our collegiate and alumnae members, recover in the wake of the hurricane's aftermath. The Sorority is thankful to report that all of the members of our Theta Kappa Chapter at the University of New Orleans, the Sigma Chapter at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, and the Kappa Alpha Chapter at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, Louisiana, are safe. Delta Zeta National Council and National Headquarters remain in contact with our undergraduate chapters during the recovery process to address their needs, as well as our alumnae chapters and alumnae members in the areas affected by the hurricane. As National Council and National Headquarters receive information concerning members in the area, we will continue to update our membership. Since our founding in 1902, Delta Zeta Sorority has always given graciously to help those in need, from service work in World War I to extraordinary support efforts after September 11, 2001. Delta Zeta encourages our members to consider donating to any reputable charity or organization of their choosing to help both our members and the many victims who were affected by the hurricane and its aftermath. Whether your donation is at the national level to help those who suffered this tragedy, or to organizations in your own neighborhood to support relief efforts, we encourage our members' generosity of spirit in supporting those who face the challenges of recovery and the emergency response professionals and volunteers who are working tirelessly to ensure that recovery. In addition, the Delta Zeta National Council and the Delta Zeta Foundation are considering efforts to assist those in need. The Beta Theta Pi administrative office staff and brothers everywhere extend their thoughts and prayers to the residents of New Orleans and those affected by hurricane Katrina in the states of Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi. The Fraternity has three active chapters (Ole Miss, Alabama and Auburn) and over 3,400 alumni in the region.
The following chapters were potentially affected by Hurricane Katrina: University of Mississippi - no confirmed reports; University of Alabama - no confirmed reports; Auburn University - no confirmed reports; If you have information to add or share, please do. You may edit this link directly from your personal computer by selecting 'Edit' on the left side of the screen or you may call the administrative office at 1-800-800-BETA with information. If you speak to undergraduates or alumni from these areas, please pass along any information on how they fared to aoffice@wooglin.com ___________________________________ Our chapter is currently manning tables at a campus plaza to take donations. To my knowledge, we are the only fraternal organization (much like the Tsunami) to be actively seeking donations. |
Well, this isn't my GLO, but it is my employer. They've sent some health care volunteers down and they posted an email that was sent back to the corporation on our intranet site:
Henry Ford Employees Assist Hurricane Katrina Victims Hello Everyone, Before we turn in for the night, we wanted to send you all an email updating you with what is going on down here. First let us say a BIG Thanks to everyone of you who played a part in getting us down here. These people really needed us. Although there are only 22 of us, we know the volunteers are Making a Difference. You see it on faces of staff as Volunteers walk the halls. Despite everything they have endured, they continue to greet us with smiles and thank us for coming. Where do we begin..... Many of the Ochsner Hospital staff have been on campus here for 10 or so days. Many no longer have homes or families to return to. The hospital campus is guarded with Military, Local Police Authorities, and the members of the National Guard. We all feel really safe. The Red Cross and DMAT are also camped out with us and playing major roles in this effort. We know many of you would want to be here helping "hands-on," and believe us, we wish you were. As you may have already read in the news, the city has repaired the levee and begun the undertaking of pumping out the water. Officials are estimating that it will take 3 months ( AT MINIMUM ) to pump out all of the water. Ochsner Hospital was one of the lucky hospitals. It is located at an elevation above the flood level. A mere 5 miles away, many houses are completely submerged under water or the roof tops are only visible. All other hospitals in the area required complete evacuation and patients were air lifted or shuttled to Baton Rouge or other facilities. Although Katrina only lasted approximately 8 hours, it looks likes bombs went off for days. As for the accommodations, well.......we are set up in a clinic procedure room sleeping on hospital stretchers and army cots. Despite it all, the Team Spirit throughout the hospital here is absolutely amazing. It's an honor to be a part of it. Well that's all for tonight. Oh one more thing, we are donating blood tomorrow, so if you want to help and you can........ "GIVE BLOOD." The American Red Cross will thank you. Take Care, The Henry Ford Volunteer Relief Effort In addition, they are donating medical supplies and have set up a matching fund system and a way to donate through payroll deduction. We are able to spread out our donations through the December 24th paycheck, if we donate a minimum of $50 with at least $10 out of each paycheck. Personally, I can give a lot more this way than coming up with a lump sum immediately, so I'm very pleased that they're giving us that opportunity. Dee |
http://www.pursuantgroup.com/delts/2...flashstory.htm
A lot of Delt Chapters are doing fund raisers, but I got this from Nationals today for specific help for our chapters directly affected. Check the link above. |
DKE has sent a ltr. to all asking for funds "so we can help in future events.
The letter has a picture of a damaged house, which might be at Tulane and a picture of a corner of a roof which is damaged - but neither is identified as being DKE properties. It asks 10,000 alumni to send $100 each, so they'll get a mil. The letter is pretty disappointing and amateurish for a grand old group like DKE. As a former fund raiser, I'd say it's hard to get money for general and "future" purposes. More effective would have been "The DKE house at ____ suffered $________ in damages, and we to help them get back in operation by the resumption of classes in Jan." |
