The "Donate 10 bucks to the Red Cross" Thread
Ok, there are approximately 47,889 registered users for this board. Imagine if each one of those users made a 10 dollar donation to the Red Cross (or Salvation Army).
annnnd...Go! https://www.redcross.org/donate/donation-form.asp (this is a direct link to the donation page) |
To smooth things out, I made a $25 donation. Now three people just need $5 donations.
But my donation was about 30 hours ago... |
Calling all ZETAS!!!
Okay...I just made a $25 donation...I am going to challenge my sisters to meet that or at least donate something! :D
I was going to donate otherwise...my mom works for Red Cross.... After seeing the footage from the Hurricane Katrina, I can't help but donate! |
Done and done.
|
I just donated $25 and I hope my sisters will do the same :)
|
I'm going to donate to the Humane Society's Disaster Relief Fund.

Donated to both the Red Cross and the Humane Society (thanks valkyrie for the link).
|
Great job everyone!
Thanks for the link to the Humane society...they're getting cash from me too! Any of our Southern GC'rs suggest other charities that need some help? |
I already donated yesterday.
I was complaining to my husband about my a**hole boss and how I hate working for him. Hubby emailed back "It could be worse, you could be one of those poor people in N.O. or Biloxi." :( I immediately went to the Red Cross site and donated. Thanks for starting the thread and providing the link, though! |
I'm not southern, but...The McCormick Tribune Foundation will match 50 cents for each dollar (up to $1 million) donated to its Hurricane Relief Fund. The foundation is also paying all the administrative costs so 100% of all donations (and matching funds) will go to various disaster relief organizations. You can donate by credit card online, phone, or mail.
disclaimer: I work at the Tribune. |
For the Canadians who want to give:
http://www.redcross.ca http://www.salvationarmy.ca This way you can donate in Canadian dollars and still support the relief efforts in the US. |
My husband and I donated to the Red Cross this morning. Wish I had seen this first. Good to know, though. ( The McCormick Foundation matching donations.)
|
I thought if you donated to a big org like the Red Cross it wouldn't go only to one disaster.
That's what was happening after 9/11 with people giving blood and money and realizing it just went to the org to spend as they saw fit and not specifically on one event. Anyway, good thread. -Rudey |
Rudey m'dear, if you go to the red cross donation page, you may select where you want your cash to go...they have several options aside from hurricane relief. They actually require you to designate where you want your money to go...anywhere from Hurricane relief to national disaster initiative to your local RC to the measles initiative.

Here's CNN's listing of organizations
http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/08/30/kat....us/index.html and FEMA's listing Cash Sought To Help Hurricane Victims, Volunteers Should Not Self-Dispatch Release Date: August 29, 2005 Release Number: HQ-05-177 Printer friendly version icon WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Voluntary organizations are seeking cash donations to assist victims of Hurricane Katrina in Gulf Coast states, according to Michael D. Brown, Under Secretary of Homeland Security for Emergency Preparedness and Response. But, volunteers should not report directly to the affected areas unless directed by a voluntary agency. “Cash donations are especially helpful to victims,” Brown said. “They allow volunteer agencies to issue cash vouchers to victims so they can meet their needs. Cash donations also allow agencies to avoid the labor-intensive need to store, sort, pack and distribute donated goods. Donated money prevents, too, the prohibitive cost of air or sea transportation that donated goods require.” Volunteer agencies provide a wide variety of services after disasters, such as clean up, childcare, housing repair, crisis counseling, sheltering and food. “We’re grateful for the outpouring of support already,” Brown said. “But it’s important that volunteer response is coordinated by the professionals who can direct volunteers with the appropriate skills to the hardest-hit areas where they are needed most. Self-dispatched volunteers and especially sightseers can put themselves and others in harm’s way and hamper rescue efforts.” Here is a list of phone numbers set up solely for cash donations and/or volunteers. $21 million so far!
And we GCers have helped!
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050831/...rina_donations WASHINGTON - Americans are pouring in millions of dollars in donations for disaster relief in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, rescue organizations said Wednesday. The Red Cross said it had so far raised $21 million, a figure comparable to the response for tsunami victims following the devastation in Asia earlier this year. Nearly $15 million of that has come from individual donations through its Web site, with the rest representing corporate contributions. "The outpouring of support has been amazing," said Kara Bunte, a spokeswoman for the Red Cross, which has set up hundreds of shelters for hurricane victims. "People are now starting to see the images on TV and want to help," she said. Catholic Charities USA, based in Alexandria, Va., said it has received hundreds of calls in the last few days from volunteers asking how they can help. The group has raised $15,000 through its Web site, but will be stepping up collection efforts at churches in the coming days. "The response is right up there with the calls we had after 9-11," said spokeswoman Shelley Borysiewicz. "The American public is quite generous and they will rise to the occasion." ___ On the Net: Red Cross: 1-800-HELP-NOW or https://http://www.redcross.org Catholic Charities: 1-800-919-9338 or http://www.catholiccharitiesusa.org |

We've been talking about gathering as many pet carriers as we can, and renting a truck to go down to LA. The thought of so many family pets being left on their own brings tears to my eyes. |
United Jewish Communities has also set up a Hurricane Katrina relief fund. Here's the link, or you can donate through your local Jewish Federation.
The Tennessee Jaycees and the Iowa Jaycees are doing collection drives. Other Jaycee chapters will surely follow suit. The North Shore Animal League is also rescuing animals displaced by the hurricane. |
American Red Cross...
Done! $100.00 |

You guys all rock.
The American Humane Association is also doing a relief effort. I think I'm going to donate to them as well. They also look for emergency volunteers, which I think it totally awesome. If I lived close enough, I'd totally do that. |
Done.
The Red Cross site is really slow right now, and I hope that's just because so many people are trying to donate. |
I donated $50 via the Lutheran Disaster Relief Fund - Hurricane Katrina. I'm also buying items (bottled water, baby formula, etc...) to be sent on the donations truck that's leaving here this weekend.

Someone on the Welsh Terrier list I am on posted about Noah's Wish, which is a group specifically for rescuing/sheltering animals in case of disasters. They've got a group of volunteers down in the area already.
|
Done.
I spread some donations across to the Red Cross and probably the Humane Society. I'm also giving a donation to Tri Delta's Creseant Fund to be earmarked for alumnae/collegians who are affected because of the hurricane. I'm sure most of your organizations have a similar emergency fund for members in need and I'm sure many members of all organizations will be affected and need some emergency funds. |
done, prayers to all the victims :(
|
I'm going to give to the Salvation Army and to the McCormick Tribune Foundation (I like the matching funds idea).
Also, for those wishing to help the stranded animals check out the Best Friends Society at www.bestfriends.org. they are working with the ASPCA and American Humane Society to rescue animals and possibly even bring some back to Best Friends Sanctuary. The Best Friends website had a couple of good articles already about the animal shelters and how they evacuated all the animals this time before the hurricane hit. Carolyn |
just gave a quarter peice.
|
done. my prayers w the victims and their families.
|
The McCormick-Tribune Foundation is now matching 50 cents for every dollar collected for its Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund up to the first $2 million! :) (see above for link)
Meanwhile, the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine is accepting pets for people who are in Red Cross shelters. They will also be transporting animals from New Orleans to their shelters. They have a wish list, but the most urgently needed things are money and kennels. |
Just donated $25 .
|
Just dropped a half a G.
(I think that means I donated $50. At any rate thats what I did.) |
While I didn't donate to the Red Cross, I sent gift cards to Babies R Us for my good friends' friend who lost everything and is due to have her baby next week.
