Things you were afraid of as a child?

What were some of you guys scared of as little kids?

I was horrified of crabs for years when one of ours escaped from its tank and found its way to my bed.

OrigamiTulip 08-30-2005 11:55 AM

I was afraid of tornados and R2D2. I'm no longer afraid of either of them. :)

Sister Havana 08-30-2005 11:58 AM

Men with beards. No idea why! I'm not anymore, though.

Needles. Still am.

1. The dark
2. Spiders

The scarecrow from the Wizard of OZ.

KillarneyRose 08-30-2005 12:24 PM

Whenever the opening credits of television show "Hawai'i 5-0" came on, I would run out of the room because they showed a wave and I thought it was going to come out of the television set and get me.

I'm not kidding, I was terrified.

ADPiAkron 08-30-2005 12:40 PM

Hmmmm let's see...

Lightning
Tornadoes
Spiders, bugs, etc
Heights
Dark
Scary movies
Haunted Houses
Big dogs (dobermans, rottweilers, german shepherds, etc)
Being home alone at night
Suffocating/drowning
ETA: Fires (Thanks AGDee!)

There are probably others I have forgotten-- but that list will do-- it makes me look like a big enough chicken already!!!!!!!!! Other than a lessened fear of heights-- I still have a fear of all of the above!!

YES--I am still afraid of the dark!!!! I have a good reason to be though--since 3 of my grandparents have passed away, my sisters have had many an encounter with their ghosts. I am unsure of why I have not seen them, but I sleep with the hall light on just to make sure I do not see them at night in the dark!!!!!!!! I would love to see them in the daytime though!!!!!

AGDee 08-30-2005 12:43 PM

fire and tornados were my two. I would begin screaming uncontrollably if I even saw an insurance ad on TV with a house on fire. I had recurrent tornado dreams up until I was 25 or so.

honeychile 08-30-2005 12:55 PM

I absolutely could not and still cannot sleep in a room with an open door - regular door or closet door. My great-uncle was a fire chief, and really stressed the importance of a shut door during a fire.

I was also afraid of large dogs (except German Shepherds & Samoyeds), and am only now getting over it.

Except collies....

HBADPi 08-30-2005 01:11 PM

- The witch from Sleeping Beauty, I use to have my mom fast forward the parts that she was in.
- Overpasses...I hated walking over them especially when there was a highway or major road under it, I use to think that the bridge would collapse and I'd get run over.

Why would you be afraid of seeing your grandparents in the dark? All of mine are still alive but I remember my great grand parents and would really like to be able to see them again under any circumstances. (They were seriously cool!)
When I was very small we were visiting my paternal Great-Grandparents in New Orleans and their house (circa 1833) used to spook me a bit. I asked my GGM what were those things I kept seeing out of the corner of my eye but could never get a clear view of? She saw I was concerned and chuckled as she explained, "But why does this trouble you, at best it is my grandfather, and at worst it is a close cousin." So I replied (much relieved) "Ah, then that's allright, they are all family!" After that I was never troubled by things half seen and sounds half heard at that great old house. As an OBTW, I hope it came through the storm OK. I'd hate to think the family ghosts would get turfed out by bad weather. And no, this is not a joke but one of my favorite memories of times and places quickly slipping away.

CLOWNS!

BetteDavisEyes 08-30-2005 02:23 PM

1. Being possessed. I saw The Exorcist when I was 5 b/c my teenage sisters were my babysitters (terrible ones at that) & they let me sit w/them & watch it. I was deathly afraid that this would happen to someone I knew.

2. Things in the dark. Normal objects in my room became terrifying in the dark.

3. La Mano Peluda. This is an old Mexican tale told to children about a severed hand that pulls naughty children out of their beds & yanks them straight down into hell. My brother once put his hand in the freezer & then snuck into my room & pulled my feet. I screamed until I passed out. When I woke up, my mom had me in her bed & my brother was being yelled at by my older sisters after my mom gave him a spanking. I was 6 when this happened.

4. Being buried alive after seeing a movie w/Jennifer Jason Leigh about it. Scared the crap out of me.

5. Drowning

6. Being burned to death

7. Policemen. I seriously don't know why I was so afraid of them. I would run into the house & hide under the bed if I saw one going down our street. I'd cry too until someone came out to get me. Of course now, I'm marrying one.

I know it would be awesome to see them-- but I would rather see them in the daytime-- I AM TERRIFIED OF GHOSTS (well I have never seen one but I know I am afraid to!!)-- so it would make the experience scary rather than enjoyable for me!! I know- I'm weird- you don't have to say it! haha

I know this might sound kind of weird, but playing with my shadow..cuz my aunt used to tell us that if you play with your shadow, it will come out and slap you. I think she was kidding..

That made an impression on me as a child..

RedRoseSAI 08-30-2005 03:35 PM

I had this reeeeeally creepy doll that I was afraid of. I couldn't just put her in the closet or toy chest because, of course, that would just make her mad, so I had to keep her out in the room.

GeorgiaGirl 08-30-2005 03:44 PM

*The Monkeys from The Wizard of Oz
*My basement
*Spiders
*Mr. Rodgers (don't ask me why...my mom says I used to run screaming from the room whenever he came onto the TV...)

KatieKate1244 08-30-2005 03:56 PM

Ghosts. This stemmed from seeing one too many Fox specials. Also, my oldest sister took me on a walk when I was maybe 4,5, and in the old section of the graveyard, a crypt from the 1840's had broken and you could see in. I don't remember seeing a skeleton (I saw a mass of something), but that left a very lasting impression.

ZTAngel 08-30-2005 06:28 PM

An old nanny told me that the devil lives in the closets of young children. Needless to say, she didn't last long at our house. Still, she made a lasting impression. I was always FRIGHTENED at night so I made my dad close my closet door every night before bed. One night, my closet door was left open and I can remember hiding under my covers the whole night, paralyed with fear.

I now know that the nanny was off her rocker but to this day I close my closet door at night. I get a weird feeling when the lights are off and my closet door is still open.

Lizards
The Wizard of Oz - I saw that movie in a BIG screen theatre and it scared the bejeezus out of me. I still don't like that movie.

FSUZeta 08-30-2005 09:05 PM

bridges-as a child i was scared that any bridge would crumble away as we drove over it and we would plunge into the river to our death

i always thought that i could hear people creeping about outside when i was trying to go to sleep, so my brother and i set "traps" for them. we dug holes under each bedroom window and put pine cones in them then covered the holes with pine straw-they were crunchy and we would be able to hear if someone stepped on them.

i had a "tiny tears"doll, that you could give a bath to and being a negligent 4 year old mother, i left her face down in the undrained bath one night. the next morning when i got up, i found her, and picked her up and i swear that her eyes had rolled back in her head-you could see all these wires in her head. she was so scary looking i shoved her in the cabinet under the sink, afraid that she would seek revenge.

i was also afraid of ventriloquist dummies because as a child i saw an episode of "the twilight zone" where a ventriloquist was performing his act and then went to his room, put the dummy in the suitcase, lay down on the bed and went to sleep and then the dummy climbed out of the suitcase and killed the ventriloquist. i couldn't even walk past them in a store!

i think we all need to go into therapy!

valkyrie 08-30-2005 09:09 PM

-closed-in spaces (I've always been claustrophobic to some extent)
-the new tornado slide at school (for years but I finally got over it)
-flying with my dad
-storms
-I was terrified of these two paintings that hung outside one of our bathrooms. One was of a boy and the other was of a girl, and I swear they could SEE me.
-getting a haircut -- there are pictures of me standing outside crying because I was so terrified
-putting on turtlenecks (see claustrophobia)
-I was kind of a hypochondriac too. I once thought I would die after some bug bit me.
-getting lost
-OH yes also the Wizard of Oz, mostly because of the witch getting smooshed under the house -- that scared the crap out of me.
-the Mud Monster -- I swear this was a cheesy movie I saw once where there was a mud monster and his hand was chopped off and sat on a stair waiting to grab someone and fling him or her down the rest of the stairs.

I was (am?) a freak!

Rio_Kohitsuji 08-30-2005 09:19 PM

1. Birds
2. Monkeys

---Oh yeah, so you can probably guess that when I would watch Wizard of Oz I would piss my pants..

Other than those 2 things I was a little badass child, nothing else scared me.

So are you saying that if someone came out with a new movie called "The Lizard of Oz" you wouldn't want to see it? ;)

TheEpitome1920 08-30-2005 09:39 PM

The dark. :(

Sometimes I would open my eyes and various objects in my room would scare me.

ADqtPiMel 08-30-2005 09:41 PM

Big dogs. In particular, German Shepards (one killed my kitten), Rottweilers (one bit my mother and injured her really badly - very scary to see as a kid) and Standard Poodles (no idea where that one came from).

Also heights. And I'm still afraid of all of the above.

BWAHAHAHA!!! Yeah, I'd pass on that one.

"We're off to see the lizard, the wonderful lizard of Oz"

ShaedyKD 08-30-2005 10:29 PM

Sharks and earthquakes, and I'm still scared of them!

1. I'm still creeped out by baby dolls. :o I used to watch Twilight Zone and there's an episode about a killer doll named "Talking Tina". Anyhoo, had just gotten a life-sized baby doll for Christmas and I was soooo happy. Then my dingbat cousin made the remark to my mother - in front of me - "She still walking around with Talking Tina??" That was it for me. In the closet she went.

2. Clowns - the smiles look like screams to me. Then in high school I read Stephen King's IT, and that was how he described IT's smile; then later I saw the movie. Enough said. Still don't like them.

3. The HAND under the bed that will grab your foot.
4. Uncovered mirrors at night - thanks to my grandmother who had to have mirrors covered at night. It was because of some old SC superstition & I overheard her saying she awoke & saw something other than her reflection in it once.

Me too, in fact I have somewhat of an obsession with making sure my closet doors are closed even during the daytime. As a child I wasn't scared of the monsters under the bed, I was convinced they all lived in my closet.

Flushing toilets- I thought when I flushed ghost or witches were going to come up out of the pipes and get me and drown me, so I would flush and run out of the bathroom as fast as I could.

The Grateful Dead Bears (honestly). I used to have NIGHTMARES about them. I swear my parents smoked too much weed before I was born and around me as a child.

Taualumna 08-31-2005 12:45 AM

1. Mr. T
2. Headless mannequins (the ones with just a neck)
3. R2D2

girlygirl11 08-31-2005 12:52 AM

Mine is so lame:

-The Count from Sesame Street.

I thought he hid in our laundry room (to this day I still turn on the light every time I pass it), in my closet, and under my bed. One of my friends bought a shirt with his face on it recently and I couldn't look at it! I made her put on a sweater.

AXi1257 08-31-2005 08:55 AM

king kong...I always had nightmares he was going to step on my house.

fire...I would wake up at night and go in the basement and look around for anything that could start a fire...like I knew what to look for :D

spiders and snakes...STILL AM!! Snakes just freak me out.
