Hurricane Katrina
They've just upgraded Katrina to a Category 5 this morning. Only three category 5s have hit the US. If it continues to New Orleans, it's going to be a very sad situation since the city is below sea level.
My thoughts and prayers to all of the residents of the Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama coastlines. They are even predicting that this storm will remain at hurricane force for between 12-24 hours after landfall because of it's strength. Stay safe folks. Dee |
If you live in the Big Easy and have not evacuated yet, bend over and kiss your ass goodbye! Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned... in this case it's a Cat 5 hurricane named Katrina.

I have sisters and friends from NO. I hope they and their families are already in a safe place.
|
Top winds are now 175mph!!! This is going to be a bad one....
ETA: Yesterday, I was seeing more Louisiana and Mississippi license plates in the area than Georgia license plates! Looks like everyone is fleeing to Atlanta. |
This seriously makes me wana cry for everyone down there. STAY SAFE!
Holy shit I just saw that Indiana and Ohio are gona be effected too! Obviously not as bad but woah. |
Wow, a category 5. I'm praying for the best. My family in New Orleans left yesterday and are in northern Mississippi with other family.
|
During the last surveillance they found that the pressure was down to 907. If it stays that low, it could be the second most hurricane in history.
1 Unnamed (FL Keys) 1935 5 892 26.35 2 Camille (MS, SE LA, VA) 1969 5 909 26.84 3 Andrew (SE FL, SE LA) 1992 5 922 27.23 Not good, not good at all. |
Last big Cat 5 storm to hit the area was Camille in 1969, with winds approaching 200 mph and gusts reportedly over 210 mph. Here's the Wikipedia entry:

We have just been told by the Nashville newscasters that Middle Tennessee is going to get massive amounts of rain with the great chance for tornadic activity. Grrreat.
I feel so bad for the elderly/disabled/poor/tourists that aren't going to be able to get out of there. This is gonna be horrific. |
I hope everyone who can't get out is ableto stay as safe as they can.
|
This ain't gonna be pretty. I fear for people who live outside of major population centers who may not get the word in a timely manner -- or worse, may not have anywhere or know where to go.
|

For those that can't leave because they have no car, money, etc. buses will be driving by every so often at specific locations to pic people up and take then to the shelter. I was so glad to hear that the city is looking after those that can't leave the area. :( |
I look at the news and I seriously feel sick. My heart drops at the thought of what these people are about to go through.
|
As much as it would suck for another hurricane to come to my hometown, part of me would rather have the Panhandle hit over New Orleans...between being below sea level and all the historic buildings (I'm a restoration architect), it's going to be a bad scene all around.
|
How sad, not only for the potential loss of life (of course) but also for the loss of the beautiful French Quarter. I was there this past spring and fell in love with it. :(
|
My thoughts and prayers goes out to the families in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisanna.

Hi everyone... FINALLY got my power back yesterday!!!!
Katrina hit miami as a category 1 hurricane and did ALOT of damage!!!!! Trees in the roads EVERYWHERE, flooding, loss of power, structural damage, and parts of the 836 interstate collapsed. My apartment had about 1 inch worth of water throughout the living room (im on the 1st floor) and we had a hairline leak in the ceiling dropping water into the apartment throughout the storm from the sliding glass doors to the front door. I had 23 buckets lined up to catch as much water as i can. We are still cleaning up... My heart dropped when I was finally able to see the TV last night and see the picture of the hurricane now as a cat. 5. IT IS HUGE! and the eye is so well defined. My prayers and thoughts go out to alllll those people. I saw what it has done to my area as only a cat. 1. My car was actually MOVED in my parking lot, and was practically side by side with the car next to me. Trees came crashing into rear windows in my complex as well. This hurricane caught most people in my area completely by surprise. they didnt let us leave work until 5pm on thursday and by the time it hit, it was too late to get anything like water, gas, ice, board up etc. we waited on friday night in a line for gas for 2 hours, a line that wrapped all the way around the street... it was unbelievable... i just hope that people took the warnings and prepared as best as they could.. i know here we are still a mess, and i can only imagine what that area will look like tommorow... hurricanes and tropical storms are to be taken very seriously.... |
Glad to hear you're safe!

My parents and sister and family cat are with my here in Oxford. We know my parents' house does not have power in Pass Christian, MS.
The weather here in Oxford is starting to get rainy and windy. We are suppose to get some winds as strong as 35-40mph tonight. |
Not that this storm is at all funny, but has anyone else seen this reporter Steve Harrigan on Fox News?? He has been reporting live from Gulfport, MS all morning. It is possibly the most hilarious reporting I have ever seen. We have all seen the typical weather reporting with someone out in the rain, soaked, but this guy has set a whole new level. He keeps shouting "whoaaaaaaaa - I'm getting out of here! Ahhhhhhhh! " He is out of control.
I hope everyone is safe and sound. |

I hope the same can be said for the many people dealing with Katrina now. |

Hope everyone who is in the path of the storm stays safe!!! |
One of my pledge sisters just moved to NO for law school at Tulane, she hadn't even been living there for 2 weeks before she came back home to Missouri to seek shelter. I feel so bad for her and everyone else that is suffering from this storm. :(

NO is under water - some pumps have stopped working
Some people are trapped on there roofs (those that made it). And the predom. poor area was hit hard. Part of the Superdome's roof is gone (people inside can see the sky) - and all this is just NO. Please pray for them.
Katrina pounds Louisiana, Gulf Coast New Orleans pumps fail; Mississippi coast like 'hell on earth' Monday, August 29, 2005; Posted: 1:59 p.m. EDT (17:59 GMT) NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (CNN) -- Hurricane Katrina weakened slightly as it pummeled the Gulf Coast Monday, but the powerful storm still had plenty of punch as it swept through Mississippi with maximum sustained winds of 105 mph. The weather service reported that "extensive and life-threatening storm surge flooding" was occurring along the Louisiana and Mississippi coast. Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour told reporters that Katrina "came in on Mississippi like a ton of bricks." When asked what was his greatest fear, Barbour replied grimly "that there are a lot of dead people down there." Read the rest here Its a category 2 now. |
Stay safe and dry, everyone.

My best goes out to all the folks down there...
Hopefully you are not still down there... |
Nearly my boyfriend's whole family lives in southern Louisiana... as well as my brother (Tulane, he left Saturday night for Memphis). :( :( :(
My teacher was talking about the storm in class today. He says New Orleans is shaped like a bowl... pray that their levies don't break, because if they do, they are predicted to be underwater for literally six months. |
Ole Miss opens shelter for Katrina
Tad Smith Coliseum Open as Overflow Emergency Shelter
08/29/2005 OXFORD, Miss. - University of Mississippi officials have opened Tad Smith Coliseum as an overflow shelter for people displaced by Hurricane Katrina. Physical Plant workers began covering the facility's basketball court Monday morning, said Buddy Kahler, associate director of the UM Physical Plant Department. All restrooms have been stocked, trash receptacles are available and restricted areas have been cordoned off, he said. Both First Baptist Church on Van Buren Avenue and Calvary Baptist Church on Highway 30 have opened shelters in coordination with the American Red Cross, which is routing people to appropriate locations. The university is offering the coliseum as an overflow site, Kahler said. The coliseum also is available as a primary shelter for students in case of any problems with residence halls or other student housing. Anyone needing shelter for the night can come to the coliseum, located on Coliseum Drive near Highway 6. People using the shelter should park in legal parking spaces surrounding the coliseum and use one of the front entrances. "There are no accommodations for sleeping, so anyone who comes needs to bring their own comfort items: sleeping bags or bedding, toiletry items or whatever they need," Kahler said. Due to health and safety concerns, no pets are allowed in the coliseum. Also, only battery-operated electrical devices should be used to avoid overloading the building's circuits. University personnel are on hand for security and to answer questions, he said. For more information or assistance, call UM's Physical Plant Department at 662-915-7051 or 662-915-7003. by staff -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Newsdesk Story #4628 ETA: The weather has gotten worse since 8am this morning. The winds are blowing harder and the rain is coming down . Classes are cancelled at Ole Miss until 1pm tomorrow. |
Could someone from Miss confim that the Biloxi is pronounced in the southern venacular 'Buh-lux-ee'? The northern anchors on TV keep pronouncing it 'Bill-ox-ee'. Ive always herd it as the former.

Posted on the Sun Herald's blog here they kept during the storm :
Hattiesburg sorority hanging out_ Megan Sheets of Long Beach writes from the Southern Miss campus in Hattiesburg: Libby Gantt from Andalusia, Ala.; Sarah Young from Oak Grove; Wren Ward from Little Rock, Ark.; Kim Belsom from Kenner, La.; Ashley Cangelosi from Mandeville, La, and I are at the Panhellenic dorm. Right now Libby, Sarah, Megan, and Wren are all playing on computers. Wren is setting up an AIM account for Libby. Kim is sitting in the room with us just chatting and Ashley is working on some online homework. We just got our food the school, so we're prepared for tomorrow. We're also watching a movie on TV. We all decided to stay together because we are the only Chi Omega's left at school besides our resident adviser, Erica. In the beginning we had plans to go to Alabama to Libby's house, but we just decided to stick it out in H'Burg, so that we could stay together. So, we all went to church at Sacred Heart and then went to Lenny's, a sub shop, to get dinner before we had to go to a meeting in the dorm at 7 p.m. The hall director had to inform us on all of the precautions, like closing our windows and moving our stuff off the floor and away from the windows. There's a curfew from 6 a.m. Monday to 6 a.m. Tuesday. And from 6-11 a.m. tomorrow we have to be on the first or second floors (we live on the very top on the 8th floor). Due to boredom, we've also decided to explore Panhellenic. There are rumors that there are ghosts upstairs, so we've been trying to freak everybody out! Sarah and Megan were the only brave ladies that would go upstairs to explore. Ashley and Wren are way freaked out by the whole thing. posted at # 10:01 PM PsychTau |
From the Sun Herald:
The Hard Rock Casino on Casino Row in Biloxi, which was scheduled to open next week, will have to be rebuilt. The superstructure was severely damaged. There have been reports that there are several casino barges that were pulled out of water and onto land. In Biloxi at Edgewater Village, most of that shopping strip mall was devastated. The McDonald's is gone, the Village Sports Pub is gone. (I frequented this area every weekend last year.....) At DeBuys Road at U.S. 90., the Olive Garden and Red Lobster restaurants were obliterated. same here... Part of U.S. 90 collapsed in front of Edgewater Village. There have been reports of looters, and police will arrest people who are driving around, Biloxi Police Bruce Dunigan said. Jeff Davis Avenue, the main street in Long Beach, showed a lot of heavy damage to buildings; many neighborhoods had trees and power lines down. On Royal Drive in Long Beach, almnost every roof had decking exposed or ripped off the roof. The Long Beach high school and middle school sustained little damaged, but the Church of Christ across the street had its newly replaced roof ripped off. One longtime resident of Long Beach, Tim McCaffrey, said, ``Anything south of the railroad tracks was like Camille all over again.'' (in reference to the 1969 hurricane.) |
Lifesaver, you are correct..they are wrong.
Got some of the wind and rain but not much. A tornado hit in Carroll County where WGa. is. Called the hall to make sure they knew about the tornado warning and was told "we were just discussing it". Haven't heard from them so I guess they are all right. Will make sure tomorrow, lol. Recruitment starts Thursday!! |
They just reported on the newscast here in Virginia that the Biloxi area (Harris or Harrison County?) is reporting 50 confirmed deaths at this time. Rescuers haven't been able to reach all areas yet.
God bless those poor people. This reminds me of the OKC tornados (the only thing I know to compare to) in 1999...different, but same. :( PsychTau |

There are 80 deaths so far in Biloxi - with 30 of them coming from one apartment complex.
Please continue to pray. I know many of us have family/friends in Biloxi so I hope they are ok. |
Well everyone, no news from my parent's hometown of Pass Christian, MS. Oxford, MS got hit hard last night and some parts of town are without electricity. Ole Miss classes are cancelled until 1pm today. The Ole Miss campus lost a few large trees on campus and some are down throughout town.
There is no way to get through to most people with a 504 area code or a 228 area code. We finally just got an email from my grandmother, she is in Baton Rouge with her neighbors and she is okay. Please pray for us because it looks like it might be a while before anyone in New Orleans area and the MS Gulf Coast can return to see their homes. |
I hope those sisters of mine who posted in the blog are ok. :( Why in the world didn't their parents make them leave?! I would have driven down there and taken them kicking and screaming if I had to.
I hope everyone else is okay, too. I just can't get my head around the devistation. I saw this in the blog, too: "Reports from Harrison Central 9th Grade School in North Gulfport are that three of four walls there have collapsed. Rescue efforts are in progress. There were about 100 people sheltered there." Poor people - the shelter's even got blown away... |
I have family in the Alabama shore area. When they saw that Katrina had cut across FL and was headed in their direction, they boarded up their windows and stuff and thankfully got the heck out of dodge. I'm glad they're all okay. I was so worried because these are my great aunts and uncles and they're elderly.
