RE: Lost Pledge Pin

hey, i'm a pledge of Sae and I have a question. Early this summer I was at a formal dinner function with my pledgepin and a suit. To make a long story short, I passed out on the floor and woke up in the hospital and needed emergency surgery. Surgery went smoothly except the hospital had lost my suit and pledgepin!!! What does this bold for me, am I in serious trouble or do I just have to pay for a new one with a minor penalty. I honestly had no control of the situation, I wasn't even concious.

I think the only ones who can best answer this question would be members of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and no one else.

I'd start with your pledgemaster (or whatever you guys call him) in your chapter.

LightBulb 08-23-2005 02:18 PM

I'm glad you're ok!

PS - I'm sure your brothers would agree that those are very extreme cicrumstances beyond your control.

ZZ-kai- 08-23-2005 02:39 PM

Wow, imagine that, a new thread about a lost pledge pin. Maybe CarolinaCutie can help you?

Ebay.com, they have SAE pledge pins on there - buy a new one man.

NebraskaDelt 08-23-2005 03:07 PM

I hope you were compensated for the suit. The pledge pin is cheap, but a suit can run $200 or more. Get your money or your suit back!

I had the same thing happen to me. I was drunk as fuck, took my shirt off for the girl at her formal and the next day I had no idea where it was. Its not that big of a deal.

PhoenixAzul 08-23-2005 03:52 PM

I'm the worst pledge ever. I had my rose pin on my hoodie (we're allowed to do that and encouraged to wear it as often as we can). It was like a week into our pledge period, and we were headed off to a mixer at a basketball game. I had messenger bag on like I always do, but the strap must have caught my pin and ripped it off...never did find it. I called my big all upset, thinking that they were going to be mad and what have you...she laughed and said "Hey! I lost mine too!". Got another one out of an unused pledge book, and gave the chapter some dosh to replace mine. Woops.

it does and can happen. Under the circumstances, I think that the Chapter will be in a forgiving mood!

Hell, My Badge came loose and the Guard held it on to my clothing. The one that noticed it was the Executive Director of LXA!

A new Member Pin is a lot cheaper than A Badge with the stones I have in mine.

Why, yes I can!

In my chapter, we had a few extra pledge pins for stuff like this, since the clasps on the Phi pin were not as secure as our normal badges. Just tell your new member educator or pledgemaster the situation- I doubt they'll hold you accountable for circumstances beyond your control. Don't buy one off E-bay.

They lost your suit????!!!!

AznSAE 08-23-2005 07:42 PM

the pledge pins arent expensive at all. you can get an extra one or see if your big bro can loan you his. however, try not to lose your badge when you get it. welcome to the brotherhood!

deckard 08-23-2005 11:29 PM

hey thanks a ton, and yes they did lose my suit, they transferred me to a different hospital while I was out of it and when I called they denied even having it. Not the first time i've heard of things go missing in a hospital. But serious thanks, I was royally pissed and nervous.

Well whoever ends up wearing your suit, I hope they have enough sense to take the pledge pin off first. But maybe not, he probably thinks it looks cool.

btw, glad you are okay.

Tex1899 08-24-2005 09:22 AM

From a former Pledge Ed.

NEVER EVER EVER EVER LOSE YOUR PLEDGE PIN!!!

Seriously, though, if you got in trouble for losing your pledge pin in this circumstance then your Pledge Ed. and/or chapter really needs to look at their priorities. Glad you're ok.

"Never lose your pledge pin" is in my opinion more of something you say and it's not followed by action unless you're a complete idiot. I lost mine about an hour before initiation started and I started freaking out. Everything turned out ok and I'm sure it will with you.

ZZ-kai- 08-24-2005 10:20 AM

Treat your pledge-pin like you do your badge. If you do that, you'll likely never lose it.

Which is great to say when you're not passed out at a hospital getting emergency sugery.

ZZ-kai- 08-24-2005 10:31 AM

Keyword = "likely"

Did you miss that? Stop being so critical.

jharb 08-24-2005 10:44 AM

As a former recording secretary (the person in my chapter who was responsible for keeping the extra beta pins) I know that girls would lose their new member pins frequently. We had a stash of them and it wasn't a big deal. I know of people who lost badges that were jeweled, I would think that would be more of a big deal.

Also in this case it's not really your fault, I would think your chapter would be understanding of that.

I was thinking the same thing.. How can you be expected to be responsible for an object when you are unconscious?

If whoever's in charge of pledging gives you a tough time about this, in my opinion, he couldn't be acting more ridiculous.

No actually I didn't miss it, I just thought it wasn't really an appropriate response for this post.:)

ZZ-kai- 08-24-2005 12:00 PM

Just curious, I might have missed this, but how did he pass out? I know that I have passed out in the past that as a result, I had major surgery as well (appendicitis).... just wondering if it was alcohol induced or something like an aneurism or something??!!

Unless you had emergency surgery and the hospital misplaced your entire suit which the pin was fastened. I think there are exceptions for everything, even your badge.

ZZ-kai- 08-24-2005 12:35 PM

Good point. Now, to be devil's advocate. What if this kid was totally hammered or all piped up, fell down some stairs and broke his face? Is that an exception? Yeah, it sucks he broke his face AND lost his pledge pin, but it'd be his own fault.

So what if it was his fault (and I'm not saying that it was in this case)?

ZZ-kai- 08-24-2005 12:45 PM

Well, then I'd say shame on you for losing your pledge-pin. I am sure it'd be worse at some chapters and lighter at others. It appears that there are chapters (see other replies) that don't give a shit if you lose your pledge-pin, and I know of chapters that haze the hell out of you if you lose your pledge-pin.

beerbottle_eyes 08-24-2005 12:56 PM

I remeber when I lost my pledge pin...it was the day my grandfather died, and the clasp (which was loose already) must have come undone. I searched the entire CAMPUS for the thing!

I ended up borrowing an older sister's pin for the remainer of my pledge period, and they were really nice about it. (Probably because I was so upset!)

Reiterating what everyone else has said, talk to your new member educator, and you can either buy one from you nationals or from a disaffiliated member. (I'm not sure what the rules are on giving back stuff.)

cheesy 08-24-2005 01:50 PM

Well, obviously it depends on your chapter. We would have been in biiiiiig trouble if we lost ours, and the pledgemaster told the local Greek merchandise store not to order any pledge pins for anyone except himself.

Also we weren't required to wear the pin while drinking outside of the house, since most cops, bouncers, etc around campus know what pledge pins are and know that most pledges are underage...

We were told to take off our pins whenever we were going to be drinking more then a couple. In other words if you plan on being more then a little buzed leave your pin at home/put in on your bra strap etc.....

Kevin 08-25-2005 10:31 AM

I found a pledge pin from another house in my shoe one time.

It made a great thumbtack.

Put your PIN on your BRA STRAP??!??!??

I don't know if we have any national rules about drinking with our pin on (I imagine a glass of wine at a nice business dinner or restaurant would be fine, not to the bar or parties or anything) but I don't think I would ever put my pin (pledge or not) on my bra strap. Why not just put it on you Lettered thong or cheerleading shorts w/butt letters?

I would think this was quite okay. We aren't supposed to drink in letters/pin at all. I have put my pin on my bra strap under my shirt before so that it is not visible and cannot identify Pi Phi with drinking.

I've either done this or pinned it to the inside of my purse if that was feasible. For example, one day I had a business function to go to and I wore my pin, then went to an afternoon class. Several of my friends were going to the bar after class to relieve the stress of midterms. I wanted to go with them, so rather than say "Yes, dear friends, I would love to imbibe Strongbow and pink drinks with you, but first I must walk a mile back to my apartment building and carefully place this bejewelled badge into the sacred pin box where it normally resides, as not to be seen as improper," I said "Yes, dear friends, I am ever-so-excited to drink a pitcher, seeing as though we are all 21!" and pinned my pin on the strap of my bra while in the bathroom. Nobody could see it or tell it was there, and that way I didn't wreck my leather bag by sticking my pin on it. When I carry my Vera Bradley bags, I will pin my badge to the inside of an inner pocket.

lagirl33 08-25-2005 05:53 PM

We were actually supposed to wear our pins on our bra straps. Well, it was one of those things that was encouraged; keep it close to our heart, so we could think about it while we were pledging. We only wore our pins visible for meeting.

Tom Earp 08-25-2005 06:20 PM

It does Happen from the sounds of it?

It is not a death defing problems is it?:(

It can and will happen! As I said if You lose Your Badge that may cost a lot, then, YOU can cry like a baby.:(

Still doesnt get to the BRA Pinning does it? No more comment on that BS!

I've never heard of doing that, but if a girl lost her pledge pin, it wasn't a big deal :)
