Starlyte's FSU Seminole Rush

Ladies, I just got back from FSU about 3:00 this morning after helping my daughter settle into Dorman Hall. She is signed up for rush for 05 and we talked about it and I will post some info about her experience. While there this weekend, I noticed that all of the sorority houses had white tents in front, probably for the icy waters days which is mon & tues. They had an informational meeting last night at 8:00pm and I havn't talked to my daughter since. I dropped her off in front of the Wescott building. There were hundreds of girls walking on Jefferson St. and Copeland and all around. At 7:55 there were about 300 girls trying to get in the front door and many more on the street. I could tell that they were excited and some were running. My daughter was excited as well. In Dorman hall when we were moving her in on Sat., I could see sorority girls across the street practicing for rush. They were outside singing and later they were practicing greeting people at the front door. They were having fun. Today is the first icy waters day and she will meet girls from 7 or 8 sorority houses, I can't remember. I will post more in another post.
I apologize if I ramble, but 2 hours sleep doesn't cut it.

This is awesome. A girl's recruitment story from Dad's point of view. I am definitely looking forward to this one. You seem like one very cool dad. :)

It could also be for the PNMs to sit under while they're waiting to go into the houses for parties.

It's so nice to see a dad on GC sharing a rush story! Good luck to your daughter and I hope she finds her home!!! :)

seminole dad 08-22-2005 09:53 AM

I would like to thank everyone on the GC site for all of their input. Your messages have helped me to help my daughter. Yes, I'm a control freak. I don't know much about sororities, but I really love my daughter and I think she is well suited to be in one. I would like to specifically than Seminole Mom 14 since after reading her wonderful thread regarding her daughter last year I started posting. Also, big thanks to FSUZeta and ADPiUCF for giving me help. I don't know what they do with the white tents. I only surmised that they wouldn't want 1300 or so girls in and out of their houses too many times. Also, I noticed that there were landscapers at one house doing last minute work. The sorority girls must be really working hard for the massive influx of rushees. All of Tallahassee was really busy since it was moving day.

PenguinTrax 08-22-2005 10:27 AM

The tents are to provide a shady place for the PNMs to wait before entering the houses.

It should also be noted that FSU Panhellenic provides escorts (at night) for PNMs returning to the dorms after recruitment has ended for the day. Traditionally these have been provided by fraternity men on campus and are a highly sought-after position, as you can well imagine. The men are instructed in the Panhellenic way of recruitment and remain impartial and are there in insure the PNMs return to their dorms safely.

I just found out yesterday that the daughter of friends here in town decided to go through Recruitment last minute, so I'll hopefully have some updates throughout the week for everyone, too.

Good luck SeminoleDad!

I had completely forgotten about that until you mentioned it! They did that at A&M too, but I think it might have been members of the corps of cadets as well.... Hmm can't remember. Eithr way you just brought back a memory from 5 years ago that I didn't even know I had!! Haha. :)

pinkyphimu 08-22-2005 11:22 AM

seminoledad, you are a real sweetheart to get back home from moving daughter in, getting home around 3 am and feeding our need for updates!glad i could answer some questions for you and hope that starlyte finds her home at fsu.

SeminoleMom14 08-22-2005 03:12 PM

Hey Fellow Seminole parent!

So glad to see you started a rush thread for your daughter - can't wait to see how everything turns out for you.

SeminoleMom14

p.s. - PM for you.

yehornay 08-22-2005 03:23 PM

Seminole Dad, weather was horrendous in Tallahassee yesterday, wasn't it? My husband and I were there moving our daughter into her apartment. We arrived home around 1:00 a.m. and I am still tired.

I had a wonderful time visiting my daughter's house and seeing her sorority's recruitment video and skit. I know your daughter will be entertained. All the sororities have been in town the past week practicing for recruitment. My daughter was exhausted but enjoying being on the "other side."

I also asked my daughter about the little tents and she said that is where they wait to go into the house. I thought they were way too small in this humidity. Think she said some of the tents have misters so that would help except for ruining your hair and makeup! I mentioned the coffee filters and she said they only work to a point and then you have no more makeup to blot.

I hope your daughter has a wonderful week.

FSU Mom

Jill1228 08-22-2005 03:56 PM

YAY! This is cool that you are doing this for your daughter

PhiPsiRuss 08-22-2005 04:06 PM

Its great that you're this supportive of your daughter. My experience in FSU's greek system was a defining point in my life. I'm sure that she'll be very happy at the end of rush.

gaangel5 08-22-2005 09:39 PM

Hope your daughter finds a home that makes her just as happy as it made me 15 years ago. Wish my dad was this involved when I went through rush.

Hi ladies, I just wanted to update what's going on. At this point my daughter found out that she was invited back to 9 houses. I know at least six of them and will find out for sure tonight. I will also try to make up 9 names to let you know how she feels about them etc. later tonight and tomorrow. However, for now I will give you a few details about what they were wearing etc regarding a few houses. I won't tell her opinions since you would know because of colors, etc. The Chi-O's had either orange or blue halters on with a like rock/rhinestone on them. Tri Delts had polo shirts on. She didn't remember the colors but thinks some were pink and some orange. the alphi Chi O's were wearing black tee shirts with red sash's. the alpha gams had pink polos, the kappa alpha thetas had blue or yellow tube tops gathered in the front and then tied around the neck, and the KD's had blue off the shoulder shirts. I told her to write more down, maybe she will. She was disappointed by only one that cut her so far, and I'm disappointed by three. What do I know anyway? I just hope that all works out well.

Lindz928 08-24-2005 12:10 PM

I hope she enjoys the houses she is going back to!

*Wishing her lots of luck*

PenguinTrax 08-24-2005 12:12 PM

Nine invites back is great - with the new release figures, some of the larger chapters are cutting a lot more PNMs earlier on in the process, so nine is a good manageable number for her.

I think it goes down to a max of 5 or 6 for Skit day, then 3 for Pref.

Just tell her to keep an open mind...and things will take care of themselves.

FSUZeta 08-24-2005 01:32 PM

hooray for seminoledad's daughter. 9 is super and if she is only disappointed about not receiving one invite, then she must be pretty happy!!i hope she enjoys her 9 parties and has a lot of fun.

honeychile 08-24-2005 01:47 PM

I don't know what's more exciting - the nine invitations or such a great dad! :)

EEKappa 08-24-2005 01:58 PM

Starlyte is a lucky girl to have such an involved dad. I'm impressed!!

AOII_LB93 08-24-2005 04:02 PM

You have to be the coolest dad...even remembering to ask about clothing? That is so cute!:) Yay dad!

mmcat 08-24-2005 04:37 PM

here's to today being wonderful...
and big steps on the road....

dgdramadawg 08-24-2005 06:37 PM

I had 9 invites for round 2 at UGA and I felt like it was a much less gigantic and scary number to choose from! I hope she's having fun finding the perfect home for her!

epchick 08-25-2005 10:30 AM

I hope everything goes smoothly with Rush as seeing as how TS Katrina is supposed to hit there soon.

yehornay 08-25-2005 10:39 AM

I am watching Katrina closely and don't think it will get to the Tallahassee area until at least Monday afternoon. Can't remember which hurricane it was last year that went that direction but campus didn't close down for it. I know I was a nervous wreck thinking about my daughter walking on campus with all the big trees. I'm still Hurricane Ivan shy!

PenquinTrax (Barbara) what is your local news telling you about Katrina?

News here is saying it will come in weak along the east coast, and then cut across and dump out around Tampa. Projected path takes it out into the Gulf where it will strengthen and we'll probably see it on Monday, if at all. It's currently projected as coming here at around a #1.

I think Bid Day is going to be wet, but I doubt they will close campus. But really, anything could happen between now and then.

Last year they had to cancel part of Sigma Delta Tau's colonization events because of hurrican weather.

mmcat 08-25-2005 11:12 PM

may things stay nothing but wonderful...
we're all pulling for you and your terrific dad.

update

Boy, I'm sorry that I havn't kept you informed about what has been going on with my daughter's rush. The first thing that happened was that my power supply and possibly hard drive were hit by a power surge and left the computer inoperable. It has been quite a week and I'll tell what I know. It is hard to get information from a girl that is in rush. I guess they are so busy. After Icy Waters, my daughter was invited back to 9 houses. On wednesday she visited 4. She had fun at all the houses but I think there was only one she really liked. I don't want to give details about what they were doing or wearing because it could possibly reveal their identity. I was a nervous wreck because I think my daughter may be too reserved to express herself really well when you have such short time constraints. I later found out how many pnm's the sororities had to cut in the first round. It seems brutal to me for both the existing and tha potentials. I'll post more but I wanted you to know that I am still alive.

Kasis-anon 08-29-2005 05:07 PM

Seminole Dad, it's good to know that you're okay. Don't worry about not keeping us informed, but I'm sure I speak for others when I say that it's a relief to read that you and your family are safe and sound.
Hang in there with the rush thing, it's almost over and I'm sure things will turn out the way they should. I can't imagine the nerves of a parent waiting the results of their daughter's recruitment, but having read your incredibly supportive posts I'm quite sure Starlyte is a young woman who can handle things with grace. Family is the truly important thing in life and it seems like she is blessed with a great one. Thanks again for letting us know you're okay.

Tom Earp 08-29-2005 05:17 PM

DITTO!

Dads are always worried!

Just hope every thing is OkY DoKy!

Keep Flying and update all of the Ladys here as they go Nutsoind to see what is happening!

dgdramadawg 08-29-2005 05:51 PM

You mentioned that your daughter is shy... it reminds me of a girl I sponsored this fall who went through a very large rush and was very nervous about being too shy. She ended up only attending prefs at 2 houses and got a bid from the one that was her first choice all along! That just goes to show that being reserved may not make for a full party schedule, but the houses that are a true fit will recognize that it's just Starlyte's personality.

I can't wait to find out how it went!

mmcat 08-29-2005 09:13 PM

good on you seminole dad...
hopefully by today, all is wonderful for your dear and hopefully dry daughter.
fingers and toes crossed for you.

update

I would like to tell you more about my daughter's rush experience. I know some of you are waiting to find out what happened. In response to dramadawg, I wouldn't exactly call my daughter shy, but I guess that I wonder whether she went all out with each rush interview. There isn't much time and I think there may be a little "luck of the draw" with regards to who rushes you. She went to 5 sororities on thursday. She really liked three out of the five and she liked one other somewhat. So at this poing she has the potential to be invited back to five that she really likes out of 9. I don't know how anyone could really know with such short meetings. I'll post at work tomorrow for sure and let you know what happened friday.

honeychile 08-31-2005 10:41 PM

seminole dad - you must be one incredible father! Thank you SO much!!! :)

Yes, it is. I think he is trying to keep the element of surprise still by recalling piece by piece, his daughter's recruitment experience.

amycat412 09-01-2005 12:11 AM

Thanks, that's sort of what I was thinking was going on. I WANNA KNOW NOW,. lol

thetygerlily 09-01-2005 10:36 PM

I know I'm late on this, but I thought I'd jump on board and agree with everyone else- it's so great to see a dad's POV! Your daughter is very lucky that you are taking so much interest in her life and what's going on with her :-)

I hope everything's been going well for her (and you!)!!
