Famous People From Your High School

I could have sworn there was already a thread on this, and if there is, please point me in that direction. I did a search.

Did any famous or prominent people attend your high school?

At Coolidge High School in DC:

Hugh Price, former National Executive Director of the National Urban League
Carolivia Herron, author of the children's book Nappy Hair
Jerry Porter, who I guess still plays for the Raiders
Maury Povich (allegedly, I can't find any supporting data on that)
I want to say maybe Goldie Hawn, too.

moe.ron 08-18-2005 12:36 PM

Forest Hills High School:
Paul Simon
Art Garfunkel
Joey Raymone
Jerry Springer

I know there are more.

Bristol Central High School in Bristol, CT

Adrian Wojnarowski - writer for ESPN.com and correspondent for ESPN

I think that's about it - my high school hasn't really produced anyone famous other than that.

tunatartare 08-18-2005 12:41 PM

Bronx High School of Science:
5 Nobel Prize winners (don't know which ones)
the guy who pushed someone on the train tracks in NYC a few years ago (although I don't know if that's famous as much as notorious)

Sister Havana 08-18-2005 12:55 PM

Bolingbrook High School:

Probably the only person anyone would know is Robert Farmer, who used to play for the New York Giants. He was a couple years behind me.

There are several women from BHS who have been Luvabulls cheerleaders (for the Chicago Bulls) in recent years. It was almost like BHS Pom Squad/Cheerleaders=direct pipeline to Luvabulls.

layla2728 08-18-2005 01:14 PM

Pine Crest School in Florida:

Kelsey Grammar (Frasier)
Wayne Huizenga (owner of Blockbuster and half the professional sports teams in South Florida)

I know there are others, but I can't think of them right now.

Lupe Ontiveros...she was the lady that played Yolanda in the movie Selena.

There are other people that are from El Paso, but I can't say that they went to my high school (my high school is the oldest in the city though).

Other famous people from my city:

***Yvonne De Carlo (the lady that played Lily Munster)
***Sam Donaldson
***Jordan Hinson (if y'all see Disney channel, she's in that movie about a girl who's a figure skater and has to play on the hockey team---its a fairly new show, and she's not that good..lol)
***Freddy Soto (the Latino Comedian who passed away recently)
***Tim Hardaway went to my University, but I dont know if he's from El Paso, or from another place.
***There was this one actor back in the days of black and white TV. He's from El Paso, but I dont remember his name, just remember he was REALLY tall. lol.

There are more people from my city who are "famous" (especially from back in the day..lol, before around the 40s-60s, but i'd have to ask my mom for the rest of the names)

ilovemyglo 08-18-2005 01:49 PM

The most current famous of alum of my high school is Nicole Kea (Scherzinger) from Pussycat Dolls- she is the Hawaiian born one engaged to the guy from 311.

I went to the Youth Performing Arts School and DuPont Manual High for my academics (Split schedule between the two) and there are a ton of broadway and other actors from there... I just can't remember them all it's easy to remember Nicole.. she was there when I was and was voted Most Talented. She was VERY sweet and always beautiful.

I love love love her! To this day I am still jealous that she snagged Nick Hexum! Ironically enough her cousin on her mother's side was a HS classmate of mine.

We do have a famous alumna from Sacred Hearts Academy -- my all-girls Catholic school alma mater.

TIA CARRERE, but she was known as Althea Janairo back then. She's Class of 1984. Her youngest sister, Alessaundra, was a senior when I was a freshman.

SCHA-WING!

The only person who stands out to me is Quentin Richardson who I believe plays for the LA Clippers (but he might have transferred since then). He graduated when I was a sophomore and played for a few years at DePaul before getting drafted into the NBA.

Two years at Eton College while my Dad was stationed in London. Most recent guys would be HRH Prince William and HRH Prince Harry. For a better list please see excerpt below taken from school handbook:

FAMOUS OLD ETONIANS
The most famous of all Old Etonians is perhaps the Duke of Wellington, victor of Waterloo and later Prime Minister. His elder brother, Marquess Wellesley, however, stands out as one of the most devoted Old Etonians and he is buried in the Chapel. He was Governor-General in India, Foreign Secretary and self-styled ‘Minister for Eton in the world at large’ besides being one of the greatest classical scholars of his day. He was seven years in the school. The galaxy of Old Etonian Prime Ministers is well known, nineteen in all, stretching from Walpole and Pitt the Elder to Macmillan and Douglas-Home. Equally impressive are the Old Etonian writers from Gray, Shelley and Fielding to Aldous Huxley and George Orwell, not forgetting the great economist Keynes. School Library has a fine collection of first editions of works by some recent Old Etonian writers such as Ian and Peter Fleming, A. C. Swinburne, Anthony Powell, Cyril Connolly, Osbert and Sacheverell Sitwell, and Robert Bridges. Political and literary friendships were often formed at Eton: the association of Thomas Grey and Horace Walpole is one of many examples. Old Etonian explorers include Sir Humphrey Gilbert, founder of the colony of Newfoundland, Captain Oates, who was on Scott’s expedition to the South Pole, and Sir Ranulph Fiennes. Among the scientists are Robert Boyle, Sir John Herschel, and Sir Joseph Banks. The late King Birendra of Nepal, crowned in 1975, was also at Eton, as was his son.

Distinguished figures in the armed services, the law, and the Church are legion. Two generations of Etonians were lost in war during the last 100 years: 129 in the Boer War, 1,157 in World War I, and 748 in World War II. There is a memorial in the Cloisters to Colonel H. Jones VC who was killed in the Falklands War. To this day, a significant number of boys take up commissions in the Army after leaving school or university. As regards the Church, it was almost certainly one of the Founder’s aims to create a better-educated secular priesthood, and a high proportion of Etonians in the 90 years before the Protestant Reformation became priests: four were to die Protestant martyrs and two were to die for the Catholic faith. One (Ralph Sherwin) became a saint.

As today, in the 18th century there were a small number of boys from America. Two of these, Thomas Lynch and Thomas Nelson, were signatories of the American Declaration of Independence.

See www.etoncollege.com for more complete list.

Bishop Strachan School (BSS), Toronto, ON

1. Valerie Pringle--Canadian TV personality (currently of the Canadian Antique Roadshow)

2. Emily Murphy--well-known early 20th century feminist

3. Victoria Matthews--1st woman elected as an Anglican Bishop in Canada

4. Michelle Giroux, stage actress. Currently in the Stratford Festival.

I'm pretty sure Globe and Mail columnist, Margaret Wente went to BSS.

I'm not sure if the indie crowd has heard of Snoovy Brown, but she went to BSS (and is also an AGD).

The child singer Joni Mitchell gave up for adoption in the 60s graduated from BSS in the mid 80s. There have also been a few Old Girls who have had roles on television and the movies, but did not become MAJOR. There are a few Old Girls who are/were married to famous people. Author John Irving's wife graduated in the 70s, and to my understanding Paul Coffey (hockey player) is/was married to an Old Girl.
