Liberty University loosens dress code

LYNCHBURG, Virginia (AP) -- Capri pants and flip-flops will be fine in class but shorts will remain forbidden as school starts next week at Liberty University, the college founded by the Rev. Jerry Falwell.

Students were notified of the more relaxed campus dress code by e-mail. As recently as five years ago, men were required to wear ties at the university and women had to wear long skirts or dresses.

HELL YES LIBERTY!

Xylochick216 08-17-2005 10:46 AM

This was our top news story at 6 last night  Now they can finally choose what they want to wear. But they still have curfew at 10:30 or something like that. But now they have a computer lab that is 24 hours that they can access with a special pass

I'm glad I went to a school that treated me like an adult and didn't babysit me

/rant (sorry, I work with all Liberty alumni)

loosing their dress code? uh oh. hope their standards don't fall apart. :p

TristanDSP 08-17-2005 11:49 AM

I guess that day the students decided to protest by taking their pennies out of their loafers and puting a little wimple in their ties paid off....

KillarneyRose 08-17-2005 12:52 PM

The road to hell is paved with....flip flops and capri pants.

tunatartare 08-17-2005 12:59 PM

"Things are changing, so even in the business world people are more casual," he said. "I'm in music, so even if I was working in a job, I wouldn't wear a suit and tie most days."

Personally I salute them for taking the initiative and making the change. After reading the threads about BJU and the other Baptist College that have crazy rules and ridiculously strict dress codes, it's nice to see that an evangelical school realizes that change is inevitable and is trying to find a middle ground between what it thinks is right and what it's students want.

ADPiZXalum 08-17-2005 04:31 PM

It's their school, it's a private university, those people chose to go to school there, why should we care about what they wear? I mean honestly?

a.e.B.O.T. 08-17-2005 06:32 PM

OMG, so wait, do they not have a NUDE WEEK? whats college with out naked cheerleaders and football players running past your window

Tom Earp 08-17-2005 06:39 PM

Good for them? So, Where have they been?

Jeeze, nerd city or what?

DZTUBAGIRL 08-17-2005 08:46 PM

I actually looked into Liberty University. For such a christian university they were the rudest people I have ever met. I went for a weekend where you live with someone in the dorms and find out about the school. Well I was only there for a couple of hours and went and got a hotel room and lef the next day. The girl that iI was suposed to stay with ignored me and left me in her room by myself. It was horrible. My dad called and yellled at them and they still to this day send me stuff in the mail about registering... Now that I look back, I am glad I didn't go there, I don't think I could put up with all of the rules they have.

Ha ha ha...I started getting stuff from Liberty (I don't even consider myself Christian, let alone SBC) pretty early in my junior year. They'd call. My mother would tell them I wasn't interested. By the end of first semester of senior year, I had gotten into my first choice college (probably the polar opposite of Liberty), and I told them. The horror in the representative's voice as I told him I was headed to the epicenter of Northeastern liberalism was priceless. :)

LightBulb 08-18-2005 12:51 AM

Sheesh, the must be the big news all over. I heard this on K-LOVE a few hours ago.

ROTFL!!!!!!

I bet they're still praying for you!!

A girl from the church I grew up in was starting at Liberty when I was a Junior in college I think, which makes her a recent grad. I'd love to find out her opinion on this dress code change.

The old dress code (and the new one too I guess) isn't so weird if you've grown up with similar fashion choices, or to be more general, similar values.

I know, I was wondering the same thing, so I looked into it . . . and it turns out, "Rev." Falwell is, in fact, the biggest douche bag on the planet Earth.

Any opportunity to jack with his stupid ass can't go untaken - state law.

Lewis Black: Jerry Falwell was crazy before 9/11 and if you didn't know that, I'd like you to wear aluminum foil so we know who you are.

Their law school recruited me really hard. I finally told them that if they would read my file they would see I attended a Jesuit university (and we all know the Jesuits are the root of all evil and probably caused 9/11) and loved it. They left me alone after that.

This is what I don't understand about Evangical types. They act like they all have huge hard-ons for Jesus but don't like the Jesusits? They have Jesus right in their name. I know that the Jesuits are catholic and so I gues the Evangicalists are some kind of Protestant but seriously...these people both claim to follow the same teacher, and then fight with each other and are in some cases openly hostile. This confuses me and makes me want to move far away.

Liberty is my Alma Mater's traditional rival. Liberty sent me stuff so I told them I was going to Radford. I might as well have told them I was going to a Roman Orgy to sacrifice goats.

Isn't that pretty much what Radford is? :p

Well, someone from liberty's speaking at my church on Sunday.

"This Sunday Dr. Ed Hindson will be giving the message in both morning services. He is the Assistant Chancellor and Dean of the Institute of Biblical Studies at Liberty University. He is also a noted author, having written over 20 books, including Earth’s Final Hour, Is the Antichrist Alive and Well? and the popular Knowing Jesus Study Bible. He has lectured at numerous institutions, including Oxford and Harvard, and is also the speaker on The King is Coming telecast. Dr. Hindson is one of America’s outstanding Bible teachers, with special emphasis on prophecy. This weekend his message is entitled “Bible Prophecy and the War Against Terrorism.” The basis of his message is found in Matthew 24. His messages are both informative and exciting."

Xylochick216 08-20-2005 09:03 AM

We went to dinner at Ruby Tuesdays last night, and guess who was sitting at the table across from us? Yup, Mr. Falwell himself. He was eating salads (which apparently he hates but has to eat since his 2 heart attacks). I wonder if he noticed his precious Liberty students wearing their skanky "going out" clothes all over the restaurant?

Oh, and I was talking to a girl I teach who works at the movie theater near campus, and they definitely have two Liberty students on staff to ensure that no student sees anything over PG-13 (used to be PG, but I guess they realized that nothing is PG anymore).

One difference I know is that most Evangelicals I know would never say something like "they have a hard on for Jesus." How crude can you be?

They can kneel on the carpeted bar, and pray to some of my pork.

Wait, there's a moral value attached to flip flops and capri pants?

LightBulb 08-22-2005 12:40 AM

I'll keep an eye out for those goats

There are many conservative Christian types who do not believe women should wear pants.
